  • Echoes of Wisdom is echoing my early gripes with Tears of the Kingdom. And I wasn't exactly beaming with excitement for that game when it came out, if you couldn't tell lmao. So far it looks like another underwhelming open air mess, and while we're still a ways away, experience tells me that I should keep my wallet in check until there's a reason to buy it.

I am really excited for this game, links awakening being my favourite Zelda game for the switch. I love the cutesy art style and I think Zelda and the Zora look adorable. I am a bit worried about the echo ability as I’m not the smartest and I feel like I’m going to be stuck constantly without a set way to go about it. I do wish Zelda could fight because I love spamming the b button. I will be buying and I hope I love it. Can’t wait to see a video from you once you’ve beat the game!

"Objective Language for Subjective Take DETECTED" lmaooo
    "long unwieldy menu system"
The fact that the UI for the tri-rod's object selection is still one long row, just like Fuse's selection menu in TotK, is honestly baffling to me. I agree with SkittyBitty's (I think it was them) criticism, this shit was already years out-of-date on TotK's release date.
Agreed about the combat seeming underwhelming. I'm not excited about spawning things to do my fighting for me. Seems like there'd be a lot of moments of just standing there and waiting.
"no sense of real progress in these games, just stuff for the sake of having stuff"
Hmmm...yea damn I think that's right. Exploring new areas is the only true motivator for progression. Once the map is explored, it then feels...empty. The items or abilities that you would get in the classic Zelda games would often significantly change how you saw the environment, even areas you already visited. So the anticipation of getting the next one in the next dungeon was an intrinsic motivator. With these "Wild-likes" the replacement for new items/abilities is new "item types" that fit into your existing abilities, like the Zonai devices for Ultrahand, the elemental fruits for arrows in TOTK, and now objects/enemies in the Tri-Rod. But it's like you said...only a few end up being way more viable than the rest. The rest can be fun to experiment with for a time, but the superior utility of the few always causes the other ones to be outshone, and ultimately they end up feeling gimmicky and ultimately unnecessary. And once you find those superior parts, you can do all your exploration or combat at peak efficiency; if you look forward to more improvements, you end up disappointed and go back to those few superior parts. For Ultrahand the biggest example of this was the fans and steering stick (AirBike) vs. all the other parts. For Fuse it was the usual elemental arrows like fire and bomb vs. the million other items in that "unwieldy menu system". I wonder if the Tri-Rod will have some clearly superior objects too, or if they figured out how to balance out the utility across all the options. Obviously you're not optimistic about this lol, and I don't think I am either tbh

I actually don't think this game is really all that popular lol. Tears of the Kingdom 20 million sales, so you were met with opposition on opinions. I think a mere fraction of those people are interested in this. 1. It's 2D 2. It stars Zelda (unfortunate reality) 3. It's indirect combat, forgoing active entirely, making it more puzzle like. I'd be surprised if it hits 3 million. I say this as someone that will enjoy this game. I do agree that a lot of what they've shown is fairly shallow. I don't agree that TOTK is as shallow as this though. Not even close. This game has failed to really show us anything beyond traversal techniques. TOTK has massive variety, even if they give you all the tools you need in the room.

I never claimed Tears is as shallow as Echoes of Wisdom, but a lot of the same worries I had back then (like lack of classic elements, or trailers not showing anything new meaning that there isn't anything new) are present here. Which is why I'm hesitant to even buy the game. You're right about the sales. I highly doubt there's a big market for this game in particular. And me, I'm not exactly made of money just to play something I probably won't like.

@@atlasroyale5294 I see. I guess I’m just reinforcing a thought I’ve had that this game is almost too shallow looking. Which you went over as well. Agreed. Hoping for the final trailer to show some real puzzle solving.
