I remember wythenshawe in the 60's,left in 1970, but this brought back memories. My playground was where the M56 now runs through. My beloved ' "Nana"" lived on Greatfield Road. It was to me, a heavenly place for kids to play. Thank you
Hand the film to Manchester uni and ask them to remaster it, this needs to be preserved and enhanced, far too little of Wythenshawe's happy past remains
Great film and thanks for putting it altogether. I first went to live in Wythenshawe when i was 6 in 1958 . My playground was when they were building Civic Centre. This has brought back lots of good memories. Well done.
Great film of Wythenshawe ! Really enjoyed remembering how it used to be ! Especially the Golden Garter as i worked as a waitress there in 1970 - 1971 , great times and saw all the top acts including Roy Orbison !
Thanks for posting, the only thing I regret about growing up in Wivvy in the 70s was that we didn't have the tech (video cams etc) we have now, 60s & 70s were the best eras for W/Shawe , I'm still here though ;)
Oh wow, I've come here after it's been shared to a group on Facebook called Wythenshawe 1 😄 I absolutely love this, it was filmed a little before my time but I have always wanted to see some old footage of my hometown. Thank you to the creators and sharers 🙌
Grew up in Benchill, Broadoak Rd, had some great times with all the lads from Broadoak Rd going to the Airport, brings tears to my eyes watching this, don't live round there know.
I learnt to swim in the small pool at the Forum swimming baths...couldn't believe it when I saw it here. We loved going there...and to the library...First began reading Enid Blyton books from there. Long ago memories.
The estate was built on former farms and agricultural land. In the 60s you could still see the remains of ponds and streams. For some children coming from slum housing this was a green paradise.
Wow. For someone who grew up in wythenshawe and likes Roxy music, this is a brilliant video. theres things on here I never thought I'd see again, like the Adventure playground (still have a scar on my knee from there) The woods (not been there since 82) the turnstile at the baths at the forum. The inside of Sharston baths. Thanks for posting. You've brought back fantastic memories.
Loved seeing the paddle boats, we loved those boats. this was our park just around the corner from our home. My sister worked at the Golden Garter for a short time and Sharston baths, brilliant memories bought back...along with a bit of Roxy music.
Pictures Northernden great memories. On Saturday you said you were 12 on the bus to get half fare, then said you were 18 to get into see the Hammer House of Horror specials, then you were 18 again in the pubs down the way and finally back to 12 for the bus home. Never forget the Airport Hotel at end of the runway. Dad took me in there for a treat on my 16th Birthday only for barman to ask if I wanted my usual pint.
Give me such an Weird feeling looking back at some of the things i remember as a kid from these videos holyhedge shops looked way better back then haha thanks for bringing back the good memories
We lived at Moat Road and used to go to holly hedge shops on our bikes with sixpence burning holes in our pockets. Lovely to have such fond memories growing up there.
I’m an 80’s kid but my 2 sisters grew up in the 70’s. I don’t live there now but wow the memories seeing this video!! I wouldn’t be surprised if my sisters were in this video somewhere
When I think of Wythenshawe in the 70s I automatically think of the "war wagon" and Tony O' wrecking the market towns of England!!! I live further up Palatine rd in Didsbury now!! Love the Roxy music !!
I assume you're talking about Tony O'Neil? He wrote a book about his exploits. I remember the book shop in Manchester had a little card where the book used to show saying "This book is the most thieved in the library." - just to let you know how popular it was. Who'd've thought it?
This is amazing thank you for sharing it, Hollyhedge is a shell of what it used to be, all the things that made it great have changed or gone, it was so family friendly, a job for everyone, Then slowly they/Government.... Took it all away, and blamed the people, causing a divide and separation. But it's where the biggest of all ❤️❤️❤️ are found xx
01:35 Edwards Court, Birch Tree Court and the two where Wilkinsons ect are now...Violet Cout and Park Court which were both demolished in 2007! Loved watching this video!!
Looks like they had a really exciting life in those days, playing football and putting windows in. I bet the rest of their lives was equally as memorable and interesting.😵
@@garycross2741 Don't remember Tranter, but I know Fahey was in there now and again. I knew a lot of people who drank in there, mainly 80's but some had been going in there for years.
Thanks for the vid! I always wondered what happened to all the "boot boys"? You used to see MUFC or MCFC Boot boys sprayed on walls. I swam (and peed) in Sharston Baths many times with school and also with my dad and brothers.
Wythenshawe has changed for the worse. I am glad I have had the chance to see what Wythenshawe was like 26 years before I was born. I was suprised that so much of it is the same but I do wish I had gotten to see things like that big old red bus, sharston baths, theatre at the forum, the golden garter and the lake in painswick park :(
Sharston dungeon you get nowt to eat, a bit o bread and butter once or twice a week. And sometimes if you're lucky, You get a jam butty, Sharston dungeon we get nowt to eat.
l heard my name mentioned (dave keogh) during the airport scenes, l feel famous...well almost.l am still here not been to airport for a while must go back to see those fire engines as the lad said.
You maybe interested in an article about this film at Wythenshawe Forums Website, it won't let me put a link up but if you search for it, it should show in the results.
Sharston baths was a top laugh. As a Northenden boy, going for guitar lessons after school wearing short shorts and carrying a guitar was pretty scary. You know what, you do need to work out how to not show intimidation in life so useful. My Mum and Dad live in Sharston these days and I have to say Civic is a lot less scary now.
@@garycross2741 it may not have been as rough as I thought, but the streets were always full of kids playing out, which they are not now, and if they didn't know you they did like to give you grief or offer to fight you. I suppose it is the other side of the coin of it being a much more sociable time.
Bloody hell...blast from the past..Hi Andy, still playing? I remember jamming with you in the woods once near Benchill rd. I was about 12 and just learning guitar. You knew our kid, Ian S. from Benchill rd.
We helped make six canoes at Oldwood School which we would take over to Painswick Park lake once a fortnight. Wythenshawe was originally Homes for Heroes, like my dad just coming back from fighting the Natzis. Now they're homes for scrotes.
Liked the video. But had a problem hearing what you were saying. No I don't have a hearing problem Just wished you could have been a bit louder. Part from that top video
Wythenshawe in the 70s was a great place to live , then came the unemployment and the drugs and the underage mums and then it became a massive shit hole. Then came the trams and the yuppies are buying the council houses and making it nice again , hopefully
Blimey, what a blast from the past, my old stomping ground, such memories of my good years in wythenshawe, thankyou for this video.

I am from Wythenshawe and it's
I just love the way the kids are wearing their old playing out clothes and not designer sports wear and trainers.
Great nostalgia - I was 14 in 1970 - I always found great things to do as long I avoided the skinheads - the decade that fashion forgot :-)
Looks like they had a really exciting life in those days, playing football and putting windows in. I bet the rest of their lives was equally as memorable and interesting.😵
I just spotted myself at 0.46 sat in the front of that mini bus and on the Street Life made by list of names.
My Dad was the Licensee at the Benchill pub in the early 70’s.
