  • BEA Vickers Viscount 701 (G-ALWE) Airliner
crashed into houses in Shadowmoss Road, Wythenshawe in March 1957
    On March 14 1957 at 13:46pm
Flight 441, was reaching the end of a scheduled passenger flight to Ringway Airport (Manchester Airport)
after a trip from Schiphol International Airport, Amsterdam. Roughly a mile from the
threshold of the runway it was making a perfectly normal approach
when it made a sudden right turn at a steep downward angle and the right wingtip clipped the ground.
With the starboard wing furrowing the earth and breaking up, the aircraft, obviously completely out of control,
went on until it struck some houses, demolishing two of them (in one of which a woman and her infant son were killed).
The aircraft came to rest in the ruins of the houses and immediately caught fire and set fire to the houses.
All the crew members and passengers were killed in the accident. The position of the final crash
was about 900 yards short of the runway and 200 yards to the right of its extended center line.
The M.E.N reported how a year before the crash, ex-airport fireman Wally Wilding
had launched a petition protesting about the dangers of low-flying aircraft. His fears came to pass in
the most tragic way - it was his wife and two-year-old son who were killed in one of the houses that the plane struck.
The disaster was front page news in the Manchester Evening News,
yet many people living in the area have no knowledge of the tragedy.
At the time there was no mass media coverage. Yet the Viscount Discovery was BEA’s flagship plane.
It was the first of its kind to crash. You saw models of that plane in the windows of travel agent shops.
The cause of the accident was the fracture, due to fatigue,
of the 9/16 inch bolt holding the bottom of the No. 2 starboard flap unit.
The flaps on the plane were held in by one bolt. When it broke it drastically
affected the dynamics of the plane, causing it to slew over and ultimately crash.
I have lived in Wythenshawe all my life and had never heard anything
about this air disaster until I did my own research through urban exploring,
Nothing was ever put up to commemorate those who died. At the very least
there should be a plaque - with the agreement of the people that live there now.
The lives lost on this day should not be forgotten
the mother and her 2 year old son in the house,
5 crew members and 15 passengers on board.
    All lost their lives.

Although I wasn't born at the time of this accident, my parents used to remind us of it whenever we drove along Shadow Moss Road in the 70s and 80s. Coincidentally, my 1st teaching job was at Newall Green and my great aunt lived in Greenbrow Road. Thanks for the video.

We lived in Peel Hall just to the North. I didn't see it happen, but recollect my dad taking me up to Shadow Moss Road on the cross bar of his bike to take a look. I was 8 at the time. Very tragic. 😪

I was born 4 years later. I was and still am infatuated with civil aviation. I used to sit on the old tree stump on the junction of Shadowmoss Road & Ringway Road as the landing aircraft went over my head. I was born & lived on Cornishway & each time I went passed the sight of this tragedy, I used to pray for the people killed. I still remember & often talk of this 'forgotten' tragedy.

I was 9 years old at the time and living in Timperley. I haven't any memory of this terrible accident, despite living only 4 miles from where it happened Thanks so much for bringing the vlog to us.

I was at St Anthonys junior school at the time and we saw the crash,, soon after the parish priest, Father Keoh got us all to pray. There were open fields between the school and Shadowmoss Road at the time

Thanks For The Comment. I also went to St Anthony's although it was in the 90s early 2000s so some time after this, I couldn't imagine so much greenery between the school And the airport especially with how established the estate is now.

Despite living near the airport too we never believed this would ever actually happen. Can remember when everyone in Wythenshawe and surrounding areas would only ever refer to the airport as Ringway.

I remember this even though I was a young boy as my grandparents lived on Ringway Road right by the runway. I was there at the time and still recall. My dad knew Wally as he worked at Ringway for BEA. Ironically this came up on Facebook the other day and I shared the same. The viscount should have passed over my grandparents house but as stated, veered right, straight into the row of houses. I stood at the end of the street watching the fire department put out the flames.

Wow, It's amazing to see how many people still recall this tragedy and to reach someone who had contact with Wally himself is amazing. The heart ache this man must have felt is the reason I made this video. Thank you so much for this comment.

we lived in green meadow walk, a couple of minutes from the scene, although only three years of age its probably one of my first memories, i remember being taken in my mothers arms and running over shadow moss road with the other ladies of our street, i think they were trying to help, i also remember a fire and later on being put to bed early as i was tired, now im nearing seventy and still now and again have vivid flashbacks in my dreams. who knows, it could have been in our street ?
    thanks for the video

Thanks for making and posting this video.
I'd forgotten all about this. Guess it gets overshadowed by the more famous and deadly Stockport and British Air Tours distasyers.

My great grandmother lived in one of the houses, I’m not sure if it was just one of the ones that were damaged, or one of the two that were destroyed. My great grandmother and pregnant gran were thankfully out at the time. My Grandad came back and panicked because he didn’t know where they were, or if they were even alive. Thankfully everybody was safe

So tragic that such a small piece of metal could cause so much loss and horror. I feel for the poor fireman who saw his own prediction come true - how awful. On a different tack, the old Pathe News film is interesting - the men working among the debris are wearing ordinary clothes, raincoats, jackets and the like. Even the firemen have only ordinary uniforms. Completely different to today.

It's a shame because there is enough space around that area that could have a simple bench or rock plaque

I recall this Air Crash. I was a teenager living in Manchester, at that time.
I recall the crash was on
a Road named Shadow Moss Road.
    Anyway, Peace to all.

All because of an inadequately-sized bolt in a wing flap.

Great video, does anyone know about an emergency runway in Timperley during WW2? I have seen a picture that looks like it was used as a runway but nothing seem with aircraft on it or a runway etc
