    Administrative Processing is the label used by the State Department to describe the situation when a case has had its interview, but visa issuance is delayed. It could be held up due to the applicant, forgetting to bring all required documents to the interview, a suspicious consular officer asking for more evidences ( 221(g) denials), a problem in the consulates visa printing process (like the NVC Computer Failure of June 2015: No Visas for 14 days), the consulate performing further investigations to verify details or search for fraud, or to request a Security Advisory Opinion that queries databases of various government law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

    As the possible causes of Administrative Processing are so broad, there is no "standard" for how it will take. It can take from weeks, to years to be resolved.
    Administrative processing can be triggered by an applicant forgetting to bring all of the required documents to the Interview. In a recent case Sasha forgot to bring her American fiancé's most recent tax return the interview. The consular officer said "Everything is ok. But before we can issue the visa you must first provide the missing document." She rushed the requested documents to the consulate, but the passport and visa did not arrive and the consulate wouldn't provide any updates. Unfortunately, she had already booked her flights. She missed her original flight, but was able to rebook. When that departure date arrived, she still didn't receive her visa, still got no updates and finally lost her ticket price.
    Depending on the consulate, resolution of a missing document AP case, is often treated as a low priority. Sometimes many weeks go by before the visa is finally issued. It is not clear if that is what happened in Sasha's case, because soon after her interview the Department of State's NVC computers failed. For her it was the perfect AP storm, one delay let to another. She is still waiting on her visa.
    Administrative Processing caused by consular requests for Security Advisory Opinions (SAO) is trully a black hole, and is where delays may be counted in years.
    SAO Administrative Processing can be triggered if the applicant's name is spelled similar to someone else's name, who is on a terrorist, criminal, or military watch list, or comes from a country commonly subject to AP delays, or is involved with High Tech, or is or has been a member of the Communist or a totalitarian party, or has family members who themselves might trigger any of the above causes.
    A national of the following countries, may be commonly subject to SAO administrative processing: Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, or Yemen.
    Remember, when applying for your Fiance or Spouse visa, EXACTLY how long it will take to get the visa is impossible to forecast. I can tell you estimates for AVERAGE processing times, but the exact time in your specific case, will be unique. Do refrain from purchasing air travel or making deposits until your visa has actually been received and checked for typos.

    Hello sir, good day. May i just ask what hapoens after the consul get the passport after the interview and send it back via mail after a week that says, passport is on the way but they did not mention that visa is granted? Could it be a positive that in the mail the passport ant visa is already there or a negative?Thanks for the help sir..

      Usually you know at the time of the interview whether you have been approved or not. The consular officer tells you so. If you are still in doubt then you will have to wait to see what is inside your passport. As whether approved or denied your passport is returned to you.

      thats normal procedure to return your passport, cause it's a valuable document, and they have no idea how long you will take to submit the required documents, or even IF you actually will submit them. So they give passport back to you. Now the "ball is in your court" you get the missing documents and send them and the passport back when you are ready, or you you don't.

    Hey visa coach!
    After the interview the consul game me a sheet that said: your visa has been conditionally approved and that was 2 weeks ago. Now when we check the status of the visa is in administrative processing. Why? We didn't miss any papers. And the interview was excellent.

      any time the consulate is reviewing your case after the interview it is called Administrative Processing. Only thing for you to do is wait for the consulate to make their final decision and return your passport, hopefully with the visa inside. good luck

    Hi visa Couch. My brother have given interview on April 26th, 2017 for F2A visa. His is 20 years old and my Mom who has green applied for him. His interview went excellent except the counselor officer did not recieve the examination package by the time of the interview. He gave a yellow paper to my brother as well as he asked him to sign a paper to make sure he is not gonna get engaged or married by the visa processing time. In addition they gave him some papers for green card instruction, hoe to pay the fees and etc. Now has been 4 months no respond and still case is under adminstrative processing. What do you suggest? what should we do? Thank you

    Hi visa Coach, after K1 interview the consular requested Affidavit of support . So she's asked me to send the Documents with my passport via DHL. I sent the a week ago immediately after interview, have checked status en they're saying my Case is Open I check after 2 business days. How soon will I get my Visa?

    • @Visacoach
      @Visacoach  8 років тому

      AP for those who did not have all documents ready on the day of the interview is not a high priority usually for the consulate. You may get your visa tomorrow, or it may take many weeks. Best advice (for those who WILL have interviews) is to make sure all documents are ready and brought to the interview. In your case the BEST you now can do is be patient, and allow the consulate to work at the pace they decide to work at. Should your visa not be ready after a month, a polite email to the consulate from your American sponsor, may help to remind the consulate about your pending case.

      Always a possibility of a "problem". However, what you should do is be a bit more patient before getting concerned. Typically it takes about two BUSINESS weeks to get back your passport, you are less than half way to that point.

    Hi Fred, my fiance's K1 visa has been administrative processing for 8 months now in Lebanon, with no word or update from the consulate. Our paperwork and documents were all straight, we had proper evidence, but we think we're in AP for security checks because he has a common name. I have had my Senator inquire about our case a couple of times, but still no change. Is there any other action I can take to speed up the process (like getting an immigration lawyer)? In your experience, do you know how long it would take? Thanks!

    • @Visacoach
      @Visacoach  8 років тому

      +bonjourMELL Submitting a "straight" case and asking for your congress person to help, is all that is useful that can be done. Security checks take as long as they need. An attorney is not able to do anything you have not already done, ie: "ask the consulate for status of the case". As uncomfortable as it is, sorry, but you will have to just wait for the final results.

    Hello Visa Coach, I had my Interview for the DS 260 i.e Immigrant visa, on the day of the interview, the Immigrant Visa was petitioned for my My Dad and two of his siblings as Principal applicants, My relatives got theirs at ease but our interview (my family) went either ways, and the worse part was that we all provided the same documents ( referring to my Dad and his siblings). So after the interview, we were asked to provide a whole lots of documents, and I quote according to the consular that interviewed us, she said the only way she can issue us a Visa is unless we provide the documents she listed, we submitted the documents and up until now we haven't gotten a reply, we tracked our visa status and found out we were placed on AP although we've been checking from time to time, there's always an update, my question is that, do we have to still exercise patience and wait or do something else, plus according to the letter addressed to us, we have to wait for 90days and if we don't get a reply, we should contact them the 90days is almost up, what do you advice we do

      +Maricel Fran Administrative Processing just means the consulate is doing its admin work to clear a case. Your final missing document is now at the consulate. it is in some officers or clerks in-basket. As soon as he gets to your document he will take action. Unfortunately we don't know how full his in-basket is, so you have to simply wait, until the clerk gets to your case. If the final document is ok, then they print your visa, and return your passport to you. Next stop USA.

      When an immigration case is "forwarded to the US State Department", it means it is being sent to the US State Department's "National Visa Center" or NVC for processing.

    I have a question
    Well my mom tried twice to get the us visa to visit her sister in the us but she got rejected both times.
    First she tried it with kids leaving her husband in the county as a aproval that she will get back from the us and the secound time she was leaving her husband and her two kids behind but she got rejected anyway.The thing is that her sister isnt us citizen yet was that a problem?? Or should she wait first that her sister becomes us citizen and then to apply for visa??
    And sory for the bad english

    I went for an immigrant visa interview file by my wife in US on May 2nd, 2017. the interview was successful. the next day we received an email from immigration, that my visa application has been placed on Administrative processing, that they will return my passport to me. and if I didn't hear from them in 30 days we should contact them for an update . 30 days reached we contacted them, and they said again that the administrative processing will take up to 90 days before they can complete it. that if we didn't hear from them within 90 days we should contact them for an update. 90 days reach we contacted them for an update. they reply to our email that our case is currently pending of review at Washington. and we should contact them in another one month time for update if we didn't hear from them.

      You start by doing what the consulate officer told you to do. You go to the Syrian embassy and request the PC. If they refuse, or if after many months it is still unavailable, AFTER YOU HAVE TRIED YOUR BEST and have PROOF of what you TRIED, you can return to the consulate and perhaps at that time the consular officer will waive the requirement.

    My fiance and I have been in Administrative Processing for almost 2 years. He has had 2 interviews with the Consular and we have been told they need no further information from us. My fiance was given our case file back and the Consular is returning his visa by mail because of security issue's in Iraq. So, if you are from one of those SAO countries like my fiance, and your profession is within any Gov. type setting for said country. You are looking at years like we are.

      Aunt applies for her sister. sister gets permission to immigrate in about 7 years. If she wants a higher chance she hires me to properly prepare the application and provide guidance through out the entire process till she arrives and is granted her green card.

      @Visacoach  8 років тому

      Not knowing anything about your situation, I have no ideas what is causing your AP. A general explanation on AP is described at my video. Should your case be delayed for another few weeks, then you should contact the consulate to ask what is going on with your case.

      @Visacoach  8 років тому

      +Mohamed Moro Sorry, a lot more information is needed to give an estimate as to whether or not your case has a chance. At this time it is only the consular officer who is processing your case, who has any idea as to what your chances are to be granted the visa.

      Administrative processing can be for a variety of issues. If it goes on for over a month, ask your American Fiance or Spouse to contact her congressman to inquire.

"how long does it take to solve my case? ?" Is this a positive sign? ?? Thank you.

      It's a positive sign they kept your passport. How long it will take now, is unknown. It could be days, weeks, months. Good luck,

    Hi VisaCoach, my Chinese wife had her Interview on Sept. 26, 2015 in Guangzhou and received a 221g for more financial support documents and a statement why she was in the China Communist Party. This is something that most students do in high school because it was told by their teachers, but nobody really does anything except pay the annual fee of a few dollars.
    On Nov. 22, 2015, we submitted all of required documents, her passport and a statement that my Wife left the party and she was not involved in any activities. Since then, the application is still under Administrative Processing status. I email them twice and they said it is still processing and may "SIGNIFICANTLY" (all caps) take longer than a few months. She is also assigned a CR1 category, our 2-year anniversary is June 20th of this year.
    I have a few questions:
    1) It is safe to assume that my wife didn't have her Visa rejected?
    2) In all of your cases similar to this, how long does AP usually last?
    3) If our Visa is approved after June 20th (our 2-year anniversary), will our CR1 visa automatically be converted to IR1?
    4) Sounds like my case is at the Consulate phase (in Guangzhou? or US?), will you be able to help me speed up the process?

    • @Visacoach
      @Visacoach  8 років тому

      +Bruce Ou In practice all of these questions should be asked of the consulate. They are the ones controlling your case.
      1. no. 2. see video, no telling how long yours will last 3. ask consulate 4. consulate, ask your congressman for help

    I had the interview March 9th and they told me it's been approved even though I had a missing document that has been waived. I was surprised today to see the status switch to Administrative Processing ... I'm very worried and can't afford to stay here another week....

      If I had all your case details, perhaps I could make an educated guess as to the reason. A simpler way is to contact the consular officer and ask him his reasons for more AP.

    Hello Visa Coach. My fiancee, a Russian woman who is a legal alien working as a translator/interpreter for engineering firms and law enforcement in Seoul, South Korea, applied for a K1 visa in December last year. I myself am a commissioned officer in the US Army. She had her interview in early June and was told it would take about a week for her visa to be issued. They took her passport and all of her paperwork. It has now been over 70 days of administrative processing. They requested additional information in late June, which we had to them the next day, which they acknowledged. We have received little to no updates on her case. We contact the visa center often and I actually visited the embassy myself when I visited over the summer. The visa chief was unsure of why it was taking so long. As of now we are still told to just wait for administrative processing to conclude. Any ideas on why it would be taking so long?
