How to write 80's Funk & Boogie music.

- In this video I condense down all the elements needed to write 80's funk and boogie music. From the music theory behind it, cultural influences, drums, bass, chords, leads, and more!
I'm using FL Studio, however any workstation will do. So if you use Ableton, Reason, Logic, Studio One, and so on there will be no issues following along.

Staccatissimo. Ayyyyy Ohhhhhhhh Cannolis!
I really like how you play a clip of the song you're working on before even getting to the discussion. It's nice to have that idea of what you're working towards with each element discussed, going forward.
Really loving your tutorials
Clear, concise, no time wasting 🙏🏼
You explain stuff at just the right level - super handy, thank you
Random comment for the algorhythm. One of the best tutorial channels i've come across. Keep it up!
Wow I cant believe I found this gem of a channel. Been looking for some really in depth, intuitive explanations as to ‘why’ these songs sound the way they do rather than an endless trove of “here’s a beat I made in an hour that kind of falls into *insert genre*” This song wasn’t made, it was COMPOSED. Much respect to your craft.
Thanks fam. 🙏 I had the same fustrations seeing halfassed videos out there.
I wouldn't mind you doing a super long video one day especially in genres like these. 80s Synth funk just has so much depth and feel to me, and is so easy to update and experiment with today.
I would like to but unfortunately its hard to get people to commit to watching it. Really hard to keep good viewer retention. :(
@@ElianaDAngelo but where did you learn all of this? I have some interesting musical ideas but i unfortunately dont know a whole lot of sound selection, chords, etc used in funk
@@ElianaDAngelo i would watch it!! I would actually love to watch it! :)
@@ElianaDAngelo NOO PLEASE COME BACK ME AND THE HOMIEZ WANNA WATCH IT!!!
Yes this tutorial was very good indeed. Would also love to see morez
Your music sounds awesome 👏🏽, great feel, thank you for sharing thy chops and wisdom.
i really appreciate this. this is one of the only genres i've had trouble emulating and you helped me understand why. thanks a lot
i always come bacc to this...this is a smooth beat
Amazing walktrough, I really enjoy your work. Keep it up!
Best soul funk production tutorials. Thank you!
Super-informative. Thanks for posting!
Best tutorial i've seen in a long time! I'd love to see what synths you use and how you make your leads/ basses etc.
Hey thanks! I plan on that very thing soon.
Stumbled across your videos and wow, thank you for dropping so many gems and staying true the scope instead of attempting to game an algorithm
Just got into YUKIKA and rainbow note and now i wanna make more 80s adjacent music and this is perfect!! Tysm
This track is so fucking fire. Love how you explain too
“Like the 2 of you that are watching and have listened to my music” 😂😂 alright I’m brainwashed, I’m checking out your music now
I discovered your channel today and it's amazing for 80s lovers, miss Eliana. Congratulations. +1 sub
This is one of the best most knowlegable tutorials I have ever seen
Amazing what you do 👍✌️😍That's exactly what I do at home- but you are the Leader! 😎😂
2:51 So ingeniously but absolutely and wonderfully formulated! I had to laugh like that. That's exactly how it is, luckily I haven't got used to it. You're great, keep it up and a really nice video.
I love boogie funk and the new artists that incorporate this style (tuxedo, Chromeo) . I've always been intimidated in trying to make this music with my lack of piano playing ability and music theory knowledge but seeing your videos has given me more confidence to start working on this.
thank you for your content and your dog is awesome to ( always great having our furry little music mascots helping us out in the studio). had to give you a sub. thank you Eliana
Awesome!
my god, that first preview already made me jump around in excitement. These are such good findings thank you so much for these really informative videos ily
I'm vibing so hard to this video, these sounds, this aesthetic, the mangos I just bought, ahh I haven't fanboyed this hard since the last time I used the word fanboy!!
Unreal Eliana. You're a brilliant producer. So professional.
WTF? This is sick!!! U are intensely intelligent! And very helpful. Thank u so much lovely!
Really cool! Thx for the video! I would like to see a video from you where you show which VSTs sound authentic for the classic 80s sound you are making. Also modulation is a big part of these sounds/patches. I wonder how this is done. Big up!
I really like the level of these tutorials. They are a serious stretch for me, and I find myself pausing them to play around in FL studio to try things, or pausing to go find a sub-tutorial on how to find/route the plugins, or rewinding sections to try to play along with the parts live or reconstruct a drum part. You must put a lot of effort into making these videos, so thanks! I'm getting a lot out of them.
Thanks and I do!
@6:10 "The two of you that listen to my music" HAhaha🤣😂
unexpectedly good.................................
really appreciate what you do. I found this informative and it gives me encouragement. Thank You.
Great video and explanations. Thx so much. I like your style of music.
Nice work and very informative ! Just an all round great vid.
I dance in public, to funk, and G-funk...I ALSO want to dance to your music....I like the audio engineer community.
Got me something abrewing off the tips 🤘 ty
Your giving the keys here ! thanks a lot
Eliana, since this is the first of your videos that I found, it’s the only one I know. I keep playing this one over and over and trying things out in Logic.
Theory, I know, but production in a DAW and pop styles, I don’t. Therefore, I get a lot out of your presentation. Thank you!
I would like to listen to and transcribe lots of examples. Do you have favorites to suggest?
I’m about to dive into some of your other video links from the description. Having a lot of fun.
Man, this is great. You're awesome. Thx for uploading :)
Simply A M A Z I N G
Thanks for sharing 🐸
Very nice you have a very good feel and knowledge of this genre ….your bass is dope !… Shalamar , Roger Troutman and Atlantic Star would be proud of you!
COOL
NOW i see where G funk, dre probably got some inspiration from this style! also is that a "the lick" shirt? if so nice!
Yep. G-Funk came from P-Funk and also this sort of sound. Very west coast.
Help a lot ! Thank you
Great groove & arrangement!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Who knows which VSTi is that Reso Funk Lead?)
Love your videos, please keep it up.
I enjoy your music and videos.✊🏿
Love you content. I learned a lot. Thank you.
nice...
i love this.
Bravo💖😎💥you are very good
I'm a new subscriber! Love your channel. Thanks for this \m/
Nailed it!
I can't read music but I'm assuming that's "the lick" on your shirt
WOW! Where did you get those synths from???????? WOOOOOOOOOOw HAHAAA VERY NIcEEE
Heey whats with that sidechain clip method? (I know how to sidechain but not that way of doing it)
I'm a year too late. lol Thank you for the content! :D
Incredible! I'd love to learn what VSTs you are using for the bass, pad, and lead line. Thanks so much!
Mostly Opx Pro II 8)
@@ElianaDAngelo :)
new sub here. u explain everything really well, thank u !
You like the BOB ROSS of Production.
Hey there, came here to say thank you for the funk !
and what’s the Bpm by the way ?
80s Electric Boogie, Hi NRG, Freestyle, and early 90's House are all big favorites.. after about '94 or '95 the magic was gone for me.
I love the classics and modern stuff. Some great music coming out now best not to sleep on all of it imo 😎
❤❤❤
Do you mean low pass at 07:25 ? Since you only want the thump. Maybe i am confused.
Gotta love the 80s.
Those synths are dope. Where can I get some good electro funk presets?
The OPX-II has some great ones. Used one of them for the lead with some slight modifications. haha
Good vid, thanks! Where did you get drums samples from? Is there a good Drum vst for funk? What other instrument libraries would you recommend? (I have Scarbee funk guitar, a good Rhodes and EZBass.)
1:18 drums
Great video. What version of FL Studio are you using ?
I HOPE YOU SEE THIS QUESTION HOWS THE COMPUTER FAN NOISE RIGHT NEXT TO YOU HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH IT
I have a liquid cooler so its not too loud. Usually I just do noise reduction in post.
Lol how does this chick not have more subs. Literally one of the only female producers on YT I've come across to date aside from BadSnacks
Yea I agree. Awesome channel. She gotta make more videos tho
The UA-cam game is hard! I would suggest sharing to your friends, liking, and subbing! Comments help a lot too.
You should take a closer look. She's a trans producer. Not a female producer.
@@lexruptor I'm going to let you figure out why that comment's a little weird on your own
@@lexruptor what are you talking about?
Don’t think that we didn’t notice that your shirt is THE LICK
love the aesthetics of your music and the tutorials are so on point I wanna cry
also THE SYNTHS ARE SO GROOVY I WANNA [YOURT-SHIRT] THEM
I'm happy they have been that helpful! The shirt is from Adam Neeley's store if you want to buy it. :D
This is some A-list stuff here. This is the sort of complete tutorial for this style I've been looking for, something in the style of Dabeull. You fucking rock! The song in the background puts the stank right on my face.
If only I could be as good as Dabeull. Top tier.
ahhh "the Lick" on your shirt
Someone makes 80's boogie funk this well I have to subscribe. Great content
Thanks! As far as other producers you might really like people like XL Middleton, E. Live, Nickeee B, Jay Diggs, and Dabuell!
@@ElianaDAngelo Franc Moody for more funky grooves
I’ve played in bands during this era as a teen and you’re authentic in your production and choice of synths and drums. Great job! 👍
You are a liar.
I really dig this kind of content. The content, audio/video quality, and editing are clear and to the point and I really appreciate the lack of clickbaity/youtuber-crap and the sincerity of it all.
I'd love content that goes more in depth to the music theroy or producing side of it, and I'm also interested in your take on DnB, though this is also great.
You forgot the lick t shirt. That stuff makes or breaks a video lol
@@Zer0Spinn THe lick shirt go hard
Born in 1964 - this is my favourite music and im new in making music. you are really a gem - thank you, ELIANA from Cologne, Germany
Where can I find these type of sounds (plug-in, midi keyboard?).
Thank you for this! I’ve grown to love this genre of music
underrated channel! this is so great, thanks!
One of the more in depth videos I've seen on this topic, great explanations along the way and reasoning for the choices you've made! Would be nice to hear your take on the actual synths that you use as well, your sound is very authentic and I noticed some of your synths are from the Diva synth by U-he. Learning a lot from your videos, keep up the good work!
Thanks for the kind words. Thats coming soon!
AYO BUT SHE BE FUCKIN IT UP WITH THE CHORDS SHIT GOT ME JUMPIN
Earned yourself a sub here! Im actually trying to write in this style for some future tracks so this seriously helps out! I watched all of this and the funk bass lines cuz im a bit shit at writing bass in general haha. The tutorials so far are better than most ive come across to be honest and they are in the style I like. The tunes could definitely fit well in the synthwave scene i think. Do you have a bandcamp by chance cuz the tunes sound sick!
wow, i absolutly hate that shirt, great video though
the space in between !
you're cool
dabudeedeeda budaaah ( this is the lick )
don't drink alone
Sad that I grew up late 70s and all through the 80s and I never appreciated 80s Electro Funk Boogie style ..I love it even more now your tutorial on the style has lit a fire in me to produce this style...your doing an amazing job breaking it down, so up an coming producers like me can gain experience keep up the great work 🎹🎼
Glad it could inspire you. JDiggs is like the top Boogie guy right now as well as Nickee B
I love that “The lic” is on the shirt 😂 iykyk
This is definitely helpful! Thank you for taking the time to make this video and really go in depth explaining the mechanics of the 80´s Funk & Boogie🙏
I dance in public...to funk, and G-funk.....I ALSO DANCE TO YOUR MUSIC...THANKS ,...I ALSO LOVE ,..the audio engineer community.
those voices are killer. My hands never had performed those chord shapes physically thank you!

Love the T-shirt and dig the video
hi eliana ultra helpful video! which synth you used for the main chords? and which preset thanks!
Me: flipping through hundreds of disappointing videos trying to find electro funk/boogie, accidentally clicks on this one
Me after the first 3 sec: never seen her, is this gonna be another uncreative track?
Me after that sample: SUBSCRIBEEED
I adore this video.
Thank you so much.
I just wish the plugins and the drum kit were listed in the discription.
You're awesome. I love your tutorial videos. Could you please say where can I buy or download the samples you used? I was looking for bongos and kick samples that would fit in this tutorial but there are so much crappy stuff that doesn't look even near that. I love how your tutorial are always about genres I love. Off-topic: you´re cute =D
She got the lick on her shirt!
Thank you for this very professionnel and interesting tutorial. You have a very nice low voice, I hope you do some singing.
