These rules are due to it being a State park, which is why I plan on being on federal ground on the middle fork with my Tesoro Lobo ST and my "hands & pans". . . and a sluice box. 😀
thanks for the videos Craig, my dad and I just hit the river at Coloma for the first time and your video was spot on. are you sure no hands and pans on the right side? it looked so tempting to us
A guy I work with just went there with his little trowel on a busy Sunday and he didn’t get in trouble. People new to prospecting always ask me. I say read the rules and regulations first so yes no shovels and no machinery etc. hands and pans just don’t draw a lot of attention to yourself. You don’t want to be the guy at Coloma on a busy Sunday with a trowel dogging recklessly, bringing attention and ruining it for everybody. In my endeavors of hands and pans, keep all your gear to fit inside a pan and be low key and you have no problems.
I used a sluice there right out in tthe middle adjacent the Marsall structures. Right out in plain sight for about 3 hours. Didt know the law. They would have hung me. Didnt find one flake

Does that shovel count as "Hands and Pans?"
kabah088 Good eye! Technically, that is a trowel, not a shovel. I was using it to pry a rock, not dig, so... I'm sure it was okay.
Im not asking for legal advice but is a trowel considered to fall under the "hands and pans" rule"
kabah088 Acutually, I've heard it as yes and no. I'd not get caught ; )

Hands and Pans is a joke. Unbelievable of what has become of the 1892 mining law.
