Painter’s tape [amzn.to/2yKJGOO]
Scrub brush [amzn.to/3dYPrIG]
Bucket for cleaning mixture [amzn.to/3e5zocd]
Drop cloth [amzn.to/3e8vEqf]
Steps for Painting a Vinyl Garage Door:
1. Start by cleaning the garage door with a cleaning solution of water and a small amount of a cleaning detergent.
2. Scrub the door clean and then hose it down with water. Allow the door to dry before moving on.
3. Protect the surrounding area with painter’s tape and drop cloths. The drop cloth will prevent any paint from spilling onto the driveway, and the painter’s tape can be used to protect the rubber gasket along the edges of the garage door from getting covered in paint.
4. Cut around any window panes using the angled brush.
5. Roll the rest of the garage door with the roller. Mauro suggests not cutting/rolling the whole door all at once, as that might cause the paint to dry in areas where you haven’t finished painting yet.
6. Allow the paint to dry for a few hours and then apply a second coat using the same techniques.
Resources:
To clean the doors, Mauro used a solution of water and TSP liquid soap [amzn.to/34m58Fq]
To protect the rubber gasket on the garage door, Mauro taped them off using Frog Tape [amzn.to/2Xjxcrz].
Mauro painted the door using Benjamin Moore [www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us] Aura Semi-Gloss exterior rated paint in Van Deusen Blue. He applied the paint using a Wooster 3/8” nap, 6 ½” long roller [amzn.to/3aSTioF], and a Picasso 2 ½” angle cut brush [amzn.to/39Sxybn].

That's a really nice shade of blue!
I've never subscribed to a DIY home improvement account but this one by far was the best, easiest to explain and follow. Like having my dad work me through a project!
I appreciate covering the weather stripping. I've seen so many garage doors with the stripping curling out because it's been painted over.
This must be dependent on the kind of weather stripping. I have never had a problem with painting it. Sometimes I prime it with Zinsser BIN and sometimes I do not. If you watch a UA-cam video on painting garage doors by Chris, "The Idaho Painter," he paints the weather stripping because he says the paint offers UV protection for the weather stripping. In my opinion, if you don't paint it, it will look bad as it ages. It yellows (could that be the UV light) and gets marks from stuff rubbing against it. Unpainted, aged weather-stripping makes a nicely painted door look bad.
I don’t know if this is a “pro tip” or I’m just lazy, but lift the garage door so the bottom is about waist/chest high. Paint, and then lower the garage door level by level and you’ll never have to stoop down to paint the bottom.
Neither...I think that's just common sense!
Hell yeah, that’s a pro tip!!
Next level thinking
Really helpful to see how simple this sort of project can be. I was about to hire someone - now I know I can do this myself!
Take a razorblade and run it between the panels to make sure the paint doesnt come off around the cracks once opened
Nice. I think painting the house comes before painting the garage door for me. But you make it look so easy. I will give it a try. Thanks for the video!
Excellent video! This is exactly what I am doing today! These tips will definitely help me get a great finish!
We finally did it! We've been sitting on this video since it came out 2 years ago. We loved that blue when we first saw it - so we definitely copied you guys 🤓 We not only painted our garage door, but we also painted our front door as well. It looks beautiful 😍 Thanks for the inspiration 🤙🏼 This Old House Rocks 🤟🏼
I really hope you cleaned the door first, that is more important than sanding. Sanding gives the paint more grip tho so sanding is also a must.
Mauro's great. Definitely has a passion for his work.
I love this guy!! Keep it coming!
the blue color is a huge improvement! nice job!
Superb tutorial, thank you. I wasn't sure rolling would work, wanted to see it actually done. Its far to windy where I am to spray and the cleanup time for the sprayers is as long as the as time to paint the door, not to mention the mess.
Thank you! I feel confident I can do mine now. And you picked a great color!
Thank you for the video, you are a true professional. Now I know. Gracias!
I like the explanation to the point and easy to understand
I always thought you had to spray areas like garage doors! Thanks for a new perspective on it! More painting and staining ideas please. 😃
You should always use a airless sprayer using acrylic paint
Thumbs down
Woohoo!! OK I'm doing it. Thank you for this!!🎉🎉
I've been painting and using an alternative to taping off or having a very steady hand when working around, for example, the edges of the little windows. That is to get a piece of cardboard or something similar that won't transmit the paint or get too soggy, make sure it has a straight cut on one side, then jam that into the edge that needs to be masked with one hand and paint against it with the other hand. Getting a piece about 1 ft long seems to match well with how much paint I can get on my brush each time. Gives a perfectly neat edge and seems much faster than taping or cautiously cutting in freehand.
You can use a large drywall knife, a plastic paint shield, cardboard, those plastic yard signs. Basically anything, lol.
When renovating my house and painting to the point, I couldn’t stand it no more I learn to do this.
Looks great. Nice color.
Love it! Thank you!
awesome! Great video. Thanks.
finally! Someone who knows what they're doing! thank you.
I hope that we see thousands of beautiful freshly painted garage doors across this nation. Thanks for the totorial.
unfortunately for us in MI we can't even buy paint now lol
Pizzafourlife not even drive thru?
@@robertjpgoodspeed6805 they ordered hardware stores to close nonessential areas like gardening supplies, plant nurseries, house paint, flooring, and furniture in big box stores. I think some smaller stores are still allowed to sell them though
love the color
Didn't get a good look at the bottom above the rubber seal also; would have liked to see what it looks like between the panels with door half way up. I want to do mine which is vinyl also but should I paint the part of the panels that are concealed by the rubber edging?
how did you paint the edges of the door that are hidden behind the frame or weather stripping, when your door is opening you'll see the unpainted edges?
yeah they skipped over the one part that is unique to garage doors... i don’t understand
Pat J....as the door is going up I don't think you'll notice the unpainted edges because it's behind the stripping unless you focus on that area as it turns at an angle🤔
Thank you Mauro!
Looks very nice, I like to paint my garage door dark red, the whole neighborhood have a white garage door but I really like to make it red
Great job! Nice color
Thanks very much very helpful stay safe and happy Easter
Also! it may be much easier to just pressure wash your door if you have access to one.
Good job! Looks great.
What is your climate like? We live in Montreal Canada, so we get cold winters. I wonder if the paint would last...
What about the hardest part? The edges of the Babel’s behind the weather stripping? You may not see it when closed but when it opens , seeing the last inch of the door on each side a different color would drive me to the mental hospital.
Yep. It's a hack job.
This is NOT the way to paint a garage door. The door panels are so easy to take off and put back on. Take the time to take them off and then set them up on a pair of saw horses to paint them. Then you also don't need to worry about the weather stripping at all. Also, the trim for those windows actually pops right off so you don't have to worry about cutting in around the windows either. This old house lately has gone way down hill. Although this Mauro guy has been garbage since the introduced him years ago.
...just open the door...
I notice alot of neighbors paint the garage door frame the same color as the garage door instead of a different color. Do you have opinion about that? Thanks.
What was your name, Picasso! That’s a Rembrandt my friend. Im inspired to paint both my garage doors
I just got a new vinyl garage door. Do I have to use a primer before painting? Also, do you know if cold weather will effect the paint adherence?
Great job! do you recommend the roller or the brush?
I am a remodeling contractor when I paint garage doors I gradually move them up so I can paint all the edges and in between the door panels. By not doing so when the door is opened it doesn't look professional. I think it's really important to do it right if you're going to do it at all. Thank you for showing us this but I think it's pretty important to do it that way.
ua-cam.com/video/_uz9y1oqSL8/v-deo.html
Finally, someone with some common sense!
What do you do if the vynil is blistering?
I'm surprised you didn't need primer! Definitely going to do this.
No primer need with GOOD paint. Always get the top of the line paint..
@@personalfunfest lolwut? It's vinyl...
Paint and primer in one is what you should use
@@bobbybologna3029 is primer needed? I was wondering about that too.
Always primer. A good painter will always say prime first. Even with top of the line paint. Dont fall for the paint and primer belief
THAT'S A NICE SHADE OF BLUE MAN! NOW I WHANT TO PAINT MINES THE SAME...I GOT THE BLUE SHADE. BUT WHAT COLOR IS THAT GRAYISH ON THE HOUSE WALLS?? I LIKE THAT COLOR TOO. GOES WELL WITH THAT BLUE! THANKS...
Probably best to work top to bottom when washing it.
Looks great.
Beautiful.
What color code paint and brand is that blue one you used?
Can you paint the inside of similar garage doors?
What about when you open the door on each side won't you see a different color ?
There's no social distancing at my working its business as usual.. Boss gave some of the guys a bar of soap and a squirt bottle.. The rest of us get nothing.. But nice paint job like always...
Do you have a popping sound from paint that may get between the garage door panels?
Why not use acrylic lacquer spray. Sticks very well to vinyl, drys fast and very durable.
I would like to do this but not sure what color to pick. My house is yellow
Great job, Mauro. I always appreciate your painting how-to videos. Thank you.
Did you paint behind the weather strip?
How’d you get dings and dents in your “vinyl” garage door? I’m pretty sure your door is steel. The only thing that’s vinyl is the flap on the weatherstripping that you said was rubber.
Ok. What do you do with an wide open front door while your painting
Great video sir! Any tips on what to do if my garage door has flaking and peeling?
Ya leave it putting paint on a door with throw off its balance so unless you are gonna rewind or get bigger spring depending on how big the door is and how many coats u where gonna put on LEAVE IT!!
@@bygonewonders huh? 🤦♀️
My garage door’s primer is peeling and now the door has surface rust in many spots would like see advise on that.
Sand down the peeling places, and the rust, then paint with rust converter in the rusting areas or bare metal. Let cure, lightly sand again and then the whole door, wipe clean and then use etch primer. Then let dry, and lightly sand again and apply your top coats.
Steel door. A weak magnet will stick to it. A weak magnet won’t stick on the vinyl doors.
What sheen did you use?
This looks fantastic! I love the color. What paint and color did you use?
Do some more painting videos please!
Nice 👍🏻
Can you tell us s the color and brand of paint. Looks wonderful!
Check the video description.
I painted the vinyl siding on my house and now it has all buckled and come apart.
Why would this happen?
I assume you painted it a darker color? What happens with darker colours it absorbs more heat and causes the vinyl to buckle or warp. You need to get a vinyl compatible formula which most of the time they remove the black out of it.
You make that look easy. Thanks!
Great job. Now, can you paint my garage door?
Someone might wanna let Mauro know the difference between vinyl and aluminum.
That’s what I was wondering I was like I’ve never seen vinyl garage doors
You can hear it when he’s tapping the door and the little dents give it away. Lol
It's a vinyl coated aluminum; when they do the closeups of the painting you can clearly see the texture on the outside of the door, which you would only get from a vinyl coating.
its an embossed steel door. I've installed doors for 20 years. Aluminum doors are normally extruded and have a very distinct look. Overhead Door made a 100% vinyl door, but discontinued it around 2002.
@@adamcounterman7028 CORRECT ! I think it is a Wayne Dalton model 9600
Use your pink as a guide! Lol!
I caught that too
🤣🤣
They are using the term "live" to imply something filmed in the last few days, as opposed to the 4 minute reruns filmed from episodes years ago. Which was their status quo last week.
Don’t we need to prime it?
What about painting metal garage doors outside and inside is foam?
The same way just make sure you clean it and let it dry between coats.
This was metal. It was steel. He made a mistake on that. I install doors for a living for 20 years. It’s Not a vinyl door.
I would like to know the exact color that u used including the brand of the paint. Did u use semi-gloss?
Same question here 🧐
It is in the description of the video
What’s the name of that blue paint?
Can you paint vinyl siding the same way?
Yes, Sherman Williams makes a paint specifically for vinyl siding
Thanks
Gloss? Semi gloss? Satin? Flat?
Van Deusen blue , semi gloss Benjamin Moore
All these vids on UA-cam from the diy ers to contractors to tv shows like these old house never tell you the exact type of paints their use..They might give you the BRAND but not the type."Water base" ? Well how many type of water base categories are there? Did you paint this garage door in latex paint that's Water based..??
Cleaning detergent? Would dish detergent work?
Yes
You technically want a degreaser. If you don't have it or can't find it, Dawn dish soap would be the best alternative. But he barely scrubs the door at all. You will need to put some elbow grease into it and scrub pretty hard if you're going to use Dawn or something similar.
Nice Job and nice vid, well done!!
What brand is the paint?
Muy bonito gracias por compartir desde CD Juarez Chihuahua bendiciones para todos ustedes cuidense mucho Dios nos bendiga
Ola 😙
How do you paint the part under the weather stripping?
Daniel Hayek when I did mine I rolled up the door and from a ladder painted in while up. Only way I think you can do it
Eric Cutshall yeah I figured, thanks Eric
No professional painter would paint a garage door like this. It's very easy to take the door panels off the track, paint them on saw horses, then reattach them when fully dried. This way you don't have to worry about the weather stripping at all. The trim around the windows also easily snaps off so you don't have to worry about cutting them in.
Matthew Silver thats definitely the best way to do it but if you are unsure of how to take apart and reinstall the doors painting it in place is a better option.
@@ericcutshall5350 Taking the door off is literally just unscrewing it and then screwing it back on.
This definitely would not have gone as smooth for me lol.
Hire the tard in this video then.
Dude that paint is going to peel off like a sticker.. right off that garage door
That door is definitely not vinyl. It’s a steel door you can see a few dents on the bottom of the door, vinyl doesn’t dent up like that.
You don't cut panel by panel all the edges when opens? It shows the old colour when door opens my friend....
Does Mauro have superpowers? He’s jumping around pretty fast.
I've been installing garage doors since 1985 and have seen a vinyl or aluminum door . Steel and fiberglass.
Have or haven't seen?
Vinyl coated
Do you paint the inside?
no....well, if you want to
That garage door is steel not vinyl. Its a Wayne Dalton, 9900,9600 or 9100 which are all steel on the outside.
Detergent. Thank you, this is not vague at all.
Mauro what color is that? Looks good
What about the part of the door on the inside of the garage? We just dont worry about that or something lol?
even if you order factory colors . The inside is always white so that would be no different
sorry I can't believe he's a professional. For one thing you should also make sure you de-grease the door edges just in case someone over sprayed the door rollers or hinges. Also each door panel (section) should be painted at once starting with the top and working your way down. The door if it's attached to a opener should be taken off the track system and the top panel and each one that follows should be painted at the top partially opened to make sure you get all the edges and in between the door panel seams and that way you would not have to tape the rubber weather strip around the door. I saw drips around the window frame and the second to the last window.
Any professional painter would be called back to finish the job the right way if they did it like that. You're absolutely right, but I guess this is what passes as quality on TOH.
I hope they like the white stripes on the sides of the door when they open it.
White stripes or gray stripes?
Meh. Not gonna see it, the door will be facing up toward the ceiling.
Rick from the cape....stay in the cape.,cause George is right buddy.
@@markr7018 You'll see it as it's opening. Wouldn't get away with that if you were a professional painter.
Use acrylic or precat epoxy on vinyl doors...Not regular paint as well a good primer like "Grabber" or "high bite" primer should be used...
Me imma tape the window edges BOTTOME LINE
What about a steel door?
this is a steel door, he mistakenly called it vinyl.
