Please answer. If I want to do this for interior doors, is it the same process? The only thing I need to change is the exterior vinyl for interior right?
I used a cotton cloth to wipe it off but I didnt press hard. the paintbrush was just a standard brush but its old so the brissles are harder but I think tat works better. does that help??
does this technique work on painted interior doors? im wanting to have my interior doors all look stained but i don’t want to go through the process of paint thinner and sanding them all.
Honestly, I don’t think it’s that important. I’ve just never seen anyone online do it without it. But I really think it would be totally fine. It’s not like you can see the beige really well.
So I did my doors, we have extreme winters here. It’s peeling and bubbling. I used a very expensive stain. How do I remove the stain?? @BeachBumBoatsmith
Probably pressure wash it off. If it’s already peeling it’s possible it will come off without the use of stripper, but if not, apply citristrip when the sun is not on it (evening) and wait about 30 minutes-make sure it is all still wet and not evaporating, and then pressure wash off (soft wash). This could have happened because of the dry times/curing, or the preparation of your surface.

I used a color called "pumpkin seed" for the base and its from SICO paints but most paint companies will have something similar. I used Varathane gel stain and the color was WALNUT hope that helps!!
I'm confused by your identification of the base coat as being a "vinyl" paint. Is this a latex paint used to cover a vinyl product?.... is it also possibly all-in-one with primer?..... also SICO seems to be a Canadian specific brand. It would be good if you can re-state what you used and show a product label, product number, or anything like that to be more clear what this is. This is important enough not to get wrong !!! .... :)
there are certain paints made for vinyl, essentially its just an exterior paint. SICO is canadian but I also love benjamin moor and they have a phenomenal exterior vinyl paint aswell
@@dcwoodworks ..I get all that.....for stuff like this it is good to use specific product references like product numbers and such....just sayin'. Listing generalities like Benjamin Moore as a company name and such simply opens the door to ...too many possibilities. Thanks.
I work in the paint industry and people keep doing this. DONT DO IT. GEL STAIN AND POLY DO NOT GO ON PAINT. IT WILL FAIL. JUST BECAUSE IT LOOKS FINE AFTER 2 YEARS DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE AVOIDED CHEMICAL DAMAGES
My builder painted the textured fiberglass door black.. I prefer gel stain. Do you recommend that I strip the paint off and then do the gel stain and poly instead of painting tan?
@@lauraclinkscales104 are you going for the wood look? The tan color is what shows through the gel stain so I think it’s a very important step I also don’t think you need to strip off the black. Just scuff it up, use a good primer and then paint over it

Thanks baby!!
Can you list the products you used I’m trying to get that exact look
We are thinking about paining out white vinyl fence. What are the color and brands you used on your garage project? Also when applying the gel stain did you only use a brush stroke? Sometimes it looks like it had a lot of coverage and other times more of a paint stroke. I’m trying to figure out what stroke you used as the last to achieve the wood grain look. You did an excellent job.
Thats a great idea! I used pumpkin seed by Sico paints for the base (any cream color base will do) and Walnut gel stain by minwax (varathane is great too!).
If you listen again (sometimes I watch videos with no sound) I explain how I did it. Essentially I put it on too thick at first and then wiped it off and started over. Try a test piece first.
So awesome! Thank you!❤
You are so welcome!
Great job!!!
Thanks so much!!
Which products were used for this? And do they come in different shades?
Hey! The color is pumpkin seed from SICO paints. (As long as it’s light and creamy it’ll work). The most important color is the “special walnut” in the gel stain brand minwax
They come in so many different colors.
If the base coat of paint it light. The door will look similar to mine. If you want darker. Make your base darker. But if you want lighter, keep the base similar to mine and get a lighter gel stain color
Hope this helps!
Can you list exactly what products you used with maybe links. We would like to do exactly what you did to our doors but not sure on what and where to buy.
for sure!
So you need a vinly-safe paint which is pretty easy to find. Just head to your local paint store and ask them what they suggest. I use SICO paints from Kent building supplies but they are only in my region. Benjamin Moore, Sherwin willams are both great options for paint also.
Varathane Gel stain. this is the link. I used the color Walnut.

Hope this helps!
Btw what type of cloth did you use to wipe down the stain and what type of paint do you recommend? Thank you
I just used 100% cotton rags. You can pretty well use anything just make sure it’s not Linty lol
Please answer. If I want to do this for interior doors, is it the same process? The only thing I need to change is the exterior vinyl for interior right?
@@KirPinkFury yep it’s the exact same process
The best part of it inside is that the paint is less expensive. Just use a regular wall paint
Did you just wipe it off with a regular dry dish sponge or a gel stain course sponge? Will a clothe work for wiping as well?
I used a cotton cloth to wipe it off but I didnt press hard. the paintbrush was just a standard brush but its old so the brissles are harder but I think tat works better. does that help??
@@dcwoodworks yes thanks!
I am going to give a try
Awesome! Let me know if you have any questions
What about in between the panels? Did you paint them?
Hi, just painted them with the base coat. That way it’s not white. But I didn’t do the gel stain.
Can you tell me what colors/product you used? I like your colors
thanks! I used a base color called pumpkin seed (honestly any light beige will work)
and special walnut is the stain color, its my favourite
Thanks!
You’re so welcome! And Thankyou!
How did yours workout?
What color of primer and gel stain did you use? Also what brand did you use?
special walnut is the stain color, its my favourite
Did you use primer for your front door. I have same door like yours .
I didnt because it was already painted and holding up well. but if your door is steel i would definitely prime it first
does this technique work on painted interior doors? im wanting to have my interior doors all look stained but i don’t want to go through the process of paint thinner and sanding them all.
I can’t see why it wouldn’t. I think you should absolutely try it out!!
Does it need to be a tan primer before we start with the gel stain or can it be put on white with the same result?
I would do a test! I’ve never done it with white before so I’m not sureb
How important is that base coat (beige) as opposed to using the gel stain right over a white door?
Honestly, I don’t think it’s that important. I’ve just never seen anyone online do it without it.
But I really think it would be totally fine. It’s not like you can see the beige really well.
What paint and colors did you use?
I used pumpkinseed from SICO for the base and special walnut as the gelstain
Can you give us the color and exact type of paint you used ? Thanks !
dark walnut gel stain and pumpkin seed is the base color :) hope that helps!
What time of gel paint did you use color?
I used Walnut gel stain. I just layered it on thin.
What color base did you use
It’s called pumpkin seed! Any light beige will do. The gel stain colour is the most important part.
What color of gel stain did you use?
I used dark walnut!
Can you do this on a metal garage door?
Yes! Just use the proper primer
What base color and stain color did you use? This looks amazing!
Thankyou! I used a color called maple liquor by sico paints. And dark walnut for the gel stain
@@dcwoodworks was that varathane or miniwax?
Varathane. Because I ran out of the minwax from the front door. Both held up the exact same 🙌🏽
@@dcwoodworks you’re the best just walked out HD with Varathane 🔥
@@LoveForTheTruthTV awesome!! Good luck! It’s such an upgrade
What colors did you use?
I used pumpkin seed for the paint colour and then walnut for the gel stain over top.
Can it be use in cabinets?
Absolutely!! it would look great as a cabinet upgrade, it can be used on anything really
If I were to do a top coat or sealer what product would work ?
I would make sure to use an oil base thats exterior grade
Hey whats the name of base color you used and the brand? thanks.
Hey! It’s called pumpkin seed by sico
Please provide base paint color and brand/ tint of stain
Sorry. U already answered that😂. Great job btw
Hey! The color is pumpkin seed from SICO paints. (As long as it’s light and creamy it’ll work). The most important color is the “special walnut” in the gel stain brand minwax
Hope this helps!!
what colors and products did you use?
I used an exterior vinyl paint and the color was pumpkin seed
Then I used varathane gel stain in special walnut!
Hi what for colors are you using?
thanks! I used a base color called pumpkin seed (honestly any light beige will work)
and special walnut is the stain color, its my favourite
what color stain did you use?
Walnut! My favourite colour ever
Where’s the link to the number sign video
I’m 6 done editing it. It’ll be out in a few days. Sorry to keep you waiting!
Almost. Not 6 lol
Please you can you tell me the color and the brand of the products that you use
I used a color called "pumpkin seed" for the base and its from SICO paints but most paint companies will have something similar.
I used Varathane gel stain and the color was WALNUT
hope that helps!!
What color was the exterior vinyl paint
It was called pumpkin seed by SICO. But honestly any light beige will work
Hi, could you tell me the base coat colour and the gel stain colour please?
Hey! Absolutely, I used pumpkin seed. By sico paints. But honestly, any neutral light colour will work.
And the stain is special walnut
Actually, there’s some dark walnut in there as well. I picked up two small cans.
@@dcwoodworks Thank you very much, and much appreciated
@mogdaboi good luck on your project!!
Hi mom 🎉
Hi hunny bun!!
💚
Ty❤
You are very welcome ☺️
Does this scratch easily?
No not at all! The sun like bakes the gel stain. I tried to scratch mine and it wouldn’t
Lol thanks but no thanks
My builder painted the textured fiberglass door black.. I prefer gel stain. Do you recommend that I strip the paint off and then do the gel stain and poly instead of painting tan?
@@lauraclinkscales104 are you going for the wood look? The tan color is what shows through the gel stain so I think it’s a very important step
I also don’t think you need to strip off the black. Just scuff it up, use a good primer and then paint over it
Can it be use in cabinets?
Absolutely!! it would look so great on cabinets. are you going to try it out?
Does the base coat have to be gel or just regular exterior paint?
No the base coat is just exterior paint. its the stain thats gel.
Gel stain allows you to work with it a lot more then a regular stain.
@@dcwoodworks Thank you!
