  • A relatively short clip (Raw, unedited, cell phone footage) showing some of the powerful wind gusts that battered Naples, Fl, during the late afternoon of 9/10/2017.
Exceptionally intense gust occurs around 1:09 mark and shortly thereafter.
The official peak wind gust, recorded during hurricane Irma in the USA (142 mph), occurred in Naples, Fl.; at a location less than 2 miles from the city parking garage where this was filmed.
Damage footage from Naples can be found on my Twitter account @tbrite89.

Absolutely INCREDIBLE, Tony!!! Irma was just insane... it's so cool we got to experience it together! I can't wait for the next chase.

Tropmet | Storm Chasing Thanks so much for the very kind words, Michael! Need to ultimately edit and post the footage taken from my own HD camcorder, but simply wanted to post this snippet from my cell phone. I, too, am eagerly looking forward to the next significant chase!!

Extremeweather Coverage Oh cool! I can’t wait to see your HD edit! I saw some of the damage photos you posted on Twitter too, really amazing! I’m actually surprised the palms we filmed survived so well, most of the others in the immediate vicinity were totally shredded.

Tropmet | Storm Chasing Thanks, Michael! I, too, thought the same about the palms we filmed. Was also surprised at the relative lack of severe structural damage considering the extreme winds we observed. Aside from the strong building codes in the area, suspect the relatively short duration of highest winds and much weaker southern eyewall also played a role in the aforementioned. Although, still saw some extreme wind damage to trees/palms and bended steel poles, etc.

For sure! I've had some extensive conversations with Jose Garcia (who chased Maria in Puerto Rico) about that topic... and what factors might contribute to the discrepancies in the damage to vegetation, as there are likely numerous factors. Still, I think you're right on the money with the shorter duration, and eroded back-half playing major factors in our immediate vicinity.

Prior to hurricane Michael, this was the most intense winds and lowest barometric pressure I’d ever experienced in decades of hurricane chasing. Still shocked and amazed by the extraordinary power of the wind and surge I witnessed in Mexico Beach on 10/10/18! That said, Irma still secures a place in the top 3 of the 31 separate hurricanes I’ve experienced, to date.

As a hurricane chaser myself who lives in Naples, this was a nice front row seat that was cool to witness. I didn't experience hurricane Michael but prior to Irma my "born again" scare of my life moment was hurricane Charley in downtown Punta Gorda. It was much smaller than Irma but without a doubt much more ferocious as our amateur crew was caught off guard by the eyewalls 170+ mph gusts that felt more like an ongoing explosion rather than violent winds. Great work...I'll have to check out your hurricane Michael clips.

Hi Michael! Thank you for the comment and taking time to view this short clip. At some point in the future, I will be uploading the complete video I shot with my HD camcorder.
My father is currently very sick and it will take some time to go through the hours of footage I captured and edit it, accordingly. Thanks again for your interest in this content!

I'm currently in the process of editing Laura in Lake Charles, La and Isaias in Oak Island, NC from this season...as well as Michael in Mexico Beach, FL from 2018. Once they are complete, I was going to do the same for Irma in Naples from 2017. I'll do my very best to get all of this accomplished within the next couple of months (will prioritize Irma over Michael per your request).

Hi Jack! Thanks for the comment. It’s highly likely that there will be at least one hurricane landfall somewhere along the U.S coastline. No way to know exactly where that will be at this time, obviously

“Major” is referencing the classification as it is defined on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale (SSHWS); e.g. category three or higher.
