    This trick from 1985 is almost impossible today because BMX bikes have changed drastically! Matty Cranmer tried his best to conquer the "Miami Hopper" but this was one of the hardest tricks he has ever attempted to learn! BMX has changed so much since it started and it's amazing to see just how difficult the tricks are that the early pioneers invented!

    Old School tip from a rider of the early to late 80's. We used to have a thing called ' Rule of thumb '. Have your seat and handlebars level with one another with one thumb space ( measured by your own thumb ) between the 2. you can then grab the seat along with your handlebars with one hand. :)

      The seats also had a length that you could get a good hold on to really help move the bike around. I'm not sure about others, but I ran my bars at about 90 degrees to the ground. I found that on my 84' Haro Master with a Hutch neck, GT pro performer bars, GT laid-back post, and Kashimax Aero seat it had that perfect spacing between seat and bars.

    What we used to do was make it so our seat was perfectly in alignment and the same height as our grips when the handlebars were turned sideways. That way you only needed one hand to hold the front of the seat and the grip at the same time. You other hand was free to wave in the air (of course) and then use it to counterbalance your body when you leaned back to bring the bike upright again. Matty has one hand on the seat and one hand on the grip, so his center of gravity is pulled forward. That's why he's having such a hard time jerking the bike up off the ground and pulling it upright, and why he feels like he has to "fall back" as hard as he can.

    • @tobycooper4639
      @tobycooper4639 3 роки тому +6

      @Rippah if you're balancing on just the end of the handlebar and the peg, that would be way harder I reckon, because with the wheel when it's lying all the way over like that, there's alot of it touching the ground so it's more stable. Imagine if the rest of the bike isn't there, so just the handlebars and front wheel, if you put that on it's side it would stay there right? But trying to balance it on the peg and the handlebars would be sooo hard. I think Victor might be something else though, he could mean make a 3 point balance with the wheel, peg and handlebar

    One of my favorite tricks. I think we ran wider bars in the 80's then now and the bike geometry was way more relaxed back then. Matty did great though. 👍

      Back then they had short front triangle, with long rear triangle, (that's why laid back seat posts existed) Now they are the opposite. The Miami Hopper is easier on the new geometry, in my opinion. The new stuff is so much better on every level with exceptions to they all look the same.. Old school bikes had flavor, new school all look the same

    So cool to see the old school tricks again. I was freestyling back in the 80's. I was never much good at flatland tricks but always had a blast just street riding. I started out on a white Haro Freestyler then traded this and that and got a General RL Osborn Pro. It didn't make me any better but it was badass bike. I made some rad stainless steel pegs in shop class that I used on that bike. Our motto back in the 80's "the gods say we must ride today"
    Today, I mountain bike all the time. mostly desert flow trails but occasionally some technical mountain downhill.

    Honestly, considering what Matty is capable of this should be an easy trick. You actually have to use your upper body more, your arms need to lock it in going down and pulling back out. Practice by going about half way and then pull back out, gradually go further until you can touch the handlebar on the ground then practice the balance before worrying about pulling out.

    That was fun to watch! You did pretty good, especially on the first try! Grabbing the nose of the seat is best for doing the bar endo but if you're going down to the miami hopper, place your palm at the back of the seat to give you more support and stability when your bars touch the ground.

It almost felt like going backwards as everything became simpler but bigger and more "extreme", a sign of the times.
