Totally changed the game. Arms straight made all the difference. 38 years old and finally clicked. Thanks Porter!
That's so awesome, glad that helped!!!
Never too late to learn, lol
what are the best gears for a big bike for a 11 year old when he is doing a wheelie tell me pls@@PorterMTB
You’re that old?
ye what about it?@@LilXancheX
Biggest tip which wasn't mentioned here.. is dont look down at your bike.. focus on the road in front of you.. almost at horizon level this will help with balance and long wheelies.
That's a great point, wish I'd remembered to mention that!
Thanks man so useful
@@PorterMTBI have a bmx, can I still do wheelie’s?
Just went out and practiced. Looking out at the horizon was an immediate flipped switch
When im doing wheelies i usually watch my front wheel unti it stops.
Awwww. You're such a good teacher! Really positive and caring!
Thanks, I try hard to be patient when I'm teaching them and keep it fun!
I started doing wheelies about a year ago and I have practiced pretty much every day since then and I would say I have pretty much mastered them to the point where doing a quarter mile is pretty easy
That's so awesome, nice work!
Why am I watching this? I don’t even bike.💀🗿
Haha maybe it's time to start riding then??
Lol maybe😂🗿🗿🗿🗿
I’m gonna ride I got a box and a mountain and I’m gonna buy a surron

man im old af at 30 tearing up watching this remembering when i used to go cycling with my dad and brother. came to learn a wheelie, left with tears. your sons did tremendously!
Wow! The progression from the start of the video to the final wheelie Milo is holding at the end - Incredible!
Yeah it was crazy to watch, glad my theories worked haha, and of course he put in the practice every single time he rode till he figured it out! Wait till you see the boy's progression in our newest video today from our trip to Whistler, they blew my mind!
Love it! Milo was killing it! He’s a natural. Your advice has me feeling like I can do it!!
You can do it!! Milo has put in a lot of wheelie practice, as you could see in the end, he practiced every day to get them that good.
BEST how-to wheelie video I’ve seen thus far. Great job, live your laid back, relaxed encouragement. Not too much, not too little; you’re awesome - Thank you!!
Thanks, really appreciate that!
I have been trying to do wheelies for 4 years now and couldnt do it until i watched this your the best teacher ever thank you i subbed and i shared to all my friends 😊😊
Perfect... Eric is definitely a great teacher. Wheelies for everyone!
Thanks Jeral, I love seeing people wheelie, it's the best!
Great video… great to see a family enjoying something together and having a blast … great parenting… really happy to see it, we need more of this in the world!!
WOW!! Milo, at the end, was wheeling like he was born doing it!
Yeah it took a lot of days of practice, but then one day it really started clicking for him and he's got em dialed now!
ive been learning wheelies for a long time. im telling yall: get over your fear! the fear is mostly the only thing keeping you from going to your balance point!
I been learning for about 15 to 20 years. Still pretty hit and miss pulling them off. Extremely difficult to prevent the bike falling to either one side or the other.
I'm 64 and getting back into mountain biking. I may just learn to wheelie yet. Great video. Great parenting. 😎
Thank you so much this helped me out alot. I love how you're so in depth and you go over everything we need to know. Keep up the good work!
I havent rode a bicycle in 10+ years, now im getting a job soon to buy my first bicycle so I can feel the childhood once again at 22yo. Love the video, just subbed too. You're a great dad as well. ❤
Thanks! About to go try these, because I was doing a few things wrong:
I used my dominant foot to start
I didn't have my finger on the brake so I looped out a few times (but I landed on my feet)
And I also stopped pedaling in preparation for the wheelie. I'll try to keep pedaling. Thanks again!
Edit: Tell your sons they did absolutely amazing learning this!
Their sons are GOATS for learning this so effortlessly
@@Dolothereal definitely lol
I am 22 . I really really loved this video . I never done a wheelie in my life . Hopefully it’s never too late . Thanks a lot again ❣️❣️❣️
I learned to wheelie to be good for wheelie rides and stuff, but my country doesn't really have that community. I also needed 2 weeks to get to that point where im comfortable on the back wheel. Amazing!
When I was a kid I could ride wheelies at will for as long as I wanted. At 62 and on a full suspension MTB, Which 'seems' more difficult than my old banana seat/BMX bikes w/back pedal brake. I'm more concerned about falling these days is the biggest holdback, I think. Thanks for the video! Wheeling is great for developing balance for all riding.
Interesting perspective on using your wrong foot to initiate the wheelie. It took me a few years to finally figure out the wheelie, but I don’t think I’ve ever tried starting with my bad foot 🤔
The best part of this has got to be the kids. Showing great reception and fantastic patience! I know I didn't have that kind of patience when I was younger (still don't, if I'm being honest).
I'm around 23 years in, with multiple disciplines of biking under my belt, in that time. I do OK with wheelies. I cannot say that I have the ability or confidence to pull my front wheel off and give that a go, nor do I see that in my future. But alas, here I am, watching a "how to wheelie" tutorial - always room for improvement.
I do like the practice on a slight uphill and have recommended this to others. There seems to be a push/pull regarding weight, resistance and gravity happening. I need to rewatch, but the pedal position tip was a new one for me, and I think is a super helpful detail.
Wheelies are not only fun, but a natural progression, as well as being useful out on the trail to bail you out sometimes. Being able to manipulate the front end of the bike is a diverse skill.
Glad you enjoyed the vid! I agree that it's useful many times on trail to get your front wheel up a root or rock. Also, never to late to start trying, they are really fun! Maybe throw on a back protector or backpack just in case you loop out though haha!
Milo is turning into such a shredder!. AWESOME AS ALWAYS .
It's pretty cool to see, very proud!
thanks for making this video it helped me a lot i went before i was struggling to do 5 second wheelie now i can do 1 minute long wheelies
Thank you Porters this video helped me I had the same problems as Milo with braking and side to side balence. Sadly during the time this video came out I had a broken foot and as soon as I could this helped so much🎉.
Incredible job coaching and Incredible job riding to both of the boys!
Nice vid, even though i could already wheelie. You explained it exactly as i would explain it to someone, the relaxing part i hadn't thought of that also usefull.
I need to practice this more. Thanks for the inspiration
I have a cheap duel suspension mtb that’s front heavy and this really helped thx eric
Your teaching technique/ explanations have the perfect delivery. Both of your boys did a great job, and your older son's rip at the end was better than I can do at the moment! (and I've been riding for 45+ years!). He really applied himself and caught on quickly.
I think if I apply some of what you said during a little bit of practice, I could up my wheelie game, too. Great vid!

Good info, thanks! I think the most satisfying part of the video was seeing the kids make their progress, awesome
Hope it helped you! I agree, it was really cool to see them start to figure it out
I'm planning on creating a fixed gear wheelie tutorial for the Brazilian community, and I'm researching around varied tutorials to get important points to add to my own. This was by far the best, and with the most truly useful tips that I, as a wheelie boy myself, agree completely on. Extremely well made content! Thank you!
boa mano!
O tutorial tá pronto? Espero que tudo dê certo
This was a fantastic and lovely video like your fantastic kids. I've been trying to wheelie for >1 year. I'm some where between Milo at the start and Owen at the end! A have a poor back brake and I was starting to realise how big a problem this is so I'll be fixing that!
One tip that helped me a lot, was to FEEL your back straight, it will never be straight at all, but the FEEL of it is enough, doing that for years now and many friends got it with that tip :) Hope it helps somebody
Excellent! I'm 65, but this is the year of wheelies for me. Thanks for the vid!!
I am 70 and I’m gonna go out and give it a shot. Your boys are awesome
You helped me and now I am great a wheelies thankyou
You're an amazing teacher
Been thinking about trying to wheelie and gonna follow your advise
Great vid
Milo just unlocked the next level of riding!
Yeah he did, so awesome to see!
I have pulled EPIC wheelies for over 35 years, adjust your seat so when you are on a wheelie your seat is flat,so you dont keep sliding off! Just been practicing no handed wheelies on my ridgeback tempest 2012 bike, i am 46!
gave myself a good fall yesterday attempting a wheelie and i got this video today, its meant to be
Great teaching video! Please more ❤
Great job boys, and your dad is a great teacher.
Thanks! I've been thinking about doing more How-To videos, might have to do it!

FROM A WHEELIE LEGEND. Drop the seat where it fits right under arse , with both feet and tires on ground, you want to work from front tire being almost vertical and then blend into long catwalks. when they get the tipping point not balance point.... should take 60 hours tops ....Love vid ..Torontobikelife
Awesome vid! Keep the videos coming! The boys are shredding it!
Great tutorial
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it, hope it helped! Lots more vids coming much more regular!
I can't wait to go try this!
Cheers from Memphis
this is literally one of the best tutorials on how to wheelie!
I learned to wheelie with my seat super low, so i learned it at an hill and with a little practice i learned to wheelie on flat terrains. It just takes some pratice and patience to learn it
That's awesome you got them figured out!
Im bout to go outside and do my part now Thanks 😭🙌❤️
I find it easier to stand up and push down then pull up as sitting down, mainly because I am not strong enough to get the wheel up sitting. Loved the video , love to see if I am doing anything differently than a pro.
That's awesome, I've definitely seen that method work well for kids to help get the front wheel up when you don't have the strength or weight or size to do it sitting down!
Eric, I just learned about Day Ranch Park down in Bluffdale. It’s a brand new pump track, skatepark, and dirt jumps. Grand opening was this weekend. I saw some photos. Proper wooden lips and big whale tails / wall rides. Riding there tomorrow. You should check it out!
Doing wheelies is the best feeling ever thanks for the tutorial
I agree! Glad you enjoyed it!
👍 Perfekt, I will practice now all days. Please do more how to videos. Thanks
Awesome, let me know how it goes with the wheelie practice!! Maybe I'll do a How To Manual video??
@PorterMTB Yes, this would be great 🙏
Dude you are the goat dad for the little tid bits of lessons. Put in the work early right? Yeah! :D
This helped me so much
Thank you so much for the valuable advice, sir. I absolutely love riding trails and doing wheelies, but I can only maintain the wheelie state for a few seconds. Oh my... I'm really bad at it, I need to practice more, even though I've been trying to practice consistently since I was a student until now, nearing 30 years old, I still can't do a wheelie properly. But through this video, I think I will try my best to do it.
You got it! If you can get it there for a few seconds, practicing every day will get them locked in! 👊
I watched this and i actually did it on a dirt bike so your my new favourite UA-cam
Perfect instructions. Thanks!
Fantastic tutorial. The boys did great. And getting soooo tall!
Thanks, glad it helped you! Wait till you see Milo now, he's 6 feet tall!!!
Holy moly! Stop feeding him! LOL

Great video dad! Would love to see more videos from u with other mountain biking tips and tricks. I’m a complete beginner so anything would be appreciated.
Thanks!! I think we'll have to do some more skills videos, I'm always teaching the boys stuff so might as well share it with everyone!
Always wanted to wheelie. This video is gonna fill emergency rooms everywhere with middle aged men. See you all there!
Such a great video, all these problems are so relatable to me, except if am not used to feathering the brake so looping out is my instinct, so when start going faster and for longer I'm just going to loop ou and hurt myself, but great vid
Definitely takes practice feathering the brake, you'll get it though! Helps your trail riding as well!
Dude…. The sneaky last minute clip of Milo! 🤯 such a boss!
Thank you for all the hard work! Always love the videos!
Glad you enjoy the vids, that means a lot! Yeah I had to wait to finish this video to show his progress!
Thanks for the tutorial! It helped a lot, but I am still struggling a little bit. I wanted to ask if I need to lock my suspension. I really enjoyed the video and I am supper excited to watch your upcoming videos! I would love ride with you guys someday! thanks
Glad you liked it and it's helping you! I don't like to lock out my suspension when I do wheelies, but you could try it to see if it helps you. Hope to ride with you sometime as well, should have the next video out next week too!
Awesome! Thank you so much!
this is the best wheelie vid I've seen so far definitely some great tip's in there! keep it up boys!😃
That's awesome to hear, I'm sure there are a lot out there, but I wanted to do my best with what I know and how I'm teaching the boys.
@@PorterMTB yeah man a lot of other people don't talk about the fact that to be stable in a wheelie you need to have your seat down instead of up, and use the knees as well, so I'm glad you talked about those points! thanks!
@@4x4_DUGMTB I tried to think of everything that helped me, the only thing I forgot to mention is practicing somewhere without wind, which makes a huge difference!
@@PorterMTB yep you sure are right about the wind it really does make a difference!

Oh that's awesome, love to hear that!
Damn that practice paid off bigtime!
I practice wheelies all the time but can not be doing it right because I haven't made progress like this, I'll be checking the technique on my next ride, thanks Eric, Milo and Owen!!!
I find it helps to def do it on a grassy area to ease falling worries. Also, I’ll record with my phone to see how my posture is.
Yeah he got them figured out quick with a bunch of practice, hope it helps you figure them out!
@ energ8t It can be less stressful on grass for sure, especially when you're figuring out the brake control. Good luck with the practice, let me know how it goes!
Hey Eric I have been watching for a long time and I love you and the boys and I was wondering where I should get a good dirt jumper from
It helped meeeeee❤
Great job Milo...you did in 2 weeks that takes others months or years to do.
Once the front wheel is up/to balance point, do you look at the front wheel or do you look forward?
Thanks Eric your the best
Thanks! 👊
Been something Ive struggled with for over 30 years, I need to learn this.
You got this!! Just practice 5-10 min a day!
Im great at popping a wheelie up but this helped me keep it longer!
I love to hear that, nice work! Keep practicing and you'll be riding them as far as you want soon!
Damn! Milo was crushing it after two weeks of practice!
Yeah he picked it up quick, just practicing every day does more than you'd think!

That's awesome, congrats on the new bike! You're gonna have so much fun on it.
Appreciate it! This really helped!
That's awesome to hear, thanks!
Literally perfect explanation
I learned on my own and I did the same for the most part
So w advice.
Do you pedal while the rear brake is on sometimes, to manage the balance point? Pedaling with slight rear brake resistance as needed, or use rear brake only as needed?
That's a great question, I definitely do that a little, the better you do that the smoother the wheelie is.
I learnt to wheelie a bike a long while ago. I had a really bad bike to begin with, it had rim brakes and the rim was bent just a little so braking was uneven. Each rotation it would brake a little more by itself, that really taught me how to feather the brake. I got decent at that bike, riding wheelies the entire way over a turning narrow bridge(1.5m wide and 150 meters long maybe). When i borrowed my friends mums mtb with a hydraulic disc brake it was super easy to wheelie, i just had to get used to the feel of an mtb since it had a different frame and balance point. I taught my friend to feather the brake and he got pretty good too. I learnt to get into a wheelie without pedaling and also doing really fast wheelies with his mums bike. Also learnt to wheelie a ”old woman bike”. One of those that has a bent frame and pedalbrakes.
The fact that i learnt to wheelie on the bike that i did goes to show that you can learn on pretty much any bike.
It’s been a while since then and now im tryna learn to wheelie my dirtbike, as soon as i start riding this year im gonna learn to wheelie it.
That's awesome to hear, it's definitely hard to feather the brakes with a bent rim, I've had bikes like that before, but it made you good! I never figured out how to wheelie dirt bikes, but I will someday!
You have great energy
Thanks, we have a lot of fun!
So good thanks mate
I remember riding with a group of dudes a few years back and the guy in front of me did a wheelie all the way down a section of single track as fast as I was riding on two wheels. 😮. Now I get to learn the his ways! Can a 40 year old learn to ride a wheelie?
That's awesome, I love riding wheelies on trails! You can definitely learn at 40, just take your time, use flat pedals, lower your seat a bit, and make sure your brakes work good and you are good at modulating them, that's really the key part that keeps you from flipping over backwards. Just practice 5-10 minutes a day and you'll get it. It'll be slow progress for a while and you might not feel like you're gonna get it, but stick with it and you'll get there. Once you figure out the front to back balance point through pedaling and braking the rest will come pretty quick.
If it was easy, everyone would be popping wheelies! Great quote.
Thank you this was so helpful
