Flatland is such a mind-blowing vein of BMX. The different disciplines are all amazing in their own ways, but something about flatland is so magical to watch, and the scene seems to be filled with some really down to earth people.
"FlatLand BMX York Jam" footage goes all the way back into the 90's and was even featured on old Props videos several times. It's fun to watch everything progress over the years if you use the right keywords to find it. Some of the most amazing tricks ever. Cheers!
Thanks guys for a great time! Very impressed by Matty’s skills and look forward to seeing more Vanderrolls in the future. I’m available for any Old School Freestyle tips if needed in the future. Ride On!!
Scotty, if you're feeling up to it I am sure more folks than me would like to see you cruise around on your new skatepark. No need for tricks. I just miss seeing you on a bike in any way. It has been a bit and hopefully the COVID fatigue isn't hitting you too hard. Thanks for all you guys do!
21 years ago, Dave Norie found our little group of riders at the skateparks around southern oregon and asked if we wanted to do the Ashland OR. bike jam. We helped with building ramps and did the jump demo's with him. He was/is a legend. It's awesome to see him still going. He does a lot for bike riding in OR too.
Yep, it's in the same vein as freestyle in skateboarding IMO, its only about you and your board/bike and seeing how much precise control you can get while applying a "style" to it.
Dave Nourie doing a Gumby is what hooked me into a flatland back in 84’. I find it funny that Matty does so many tricks my 51 year old self could never do but I could bust out a Miami Hopper easily even today. Nice job on the video here, you made my day with this.
I like how after every trick he's always like"so here here's the story of how this trick was created." They are literally talking to one of the dudes who created tricks for flat ground.
That bike at 8:30 used to keep me awake at night! I lost a lot of school classes and sleep dreaming about that bike. Wow it evoked a visceral feeling when I saw it at 7:43. Crazy.
It was my dream bike, and I saved up enough to buy an 86 Master frame and fork from Rockville BMX. Selling that bike in 2005 is one of my all time biggest regrets.
Even with a big big injury Scotty still out there, represent his love for sport & showing us the love of riding ! A true legend, so nice to see you enjoying riding still so much :)
Holy cow! This really brings back a flood of memories! I’m 43 years old almost 44, and the movie rad was a huge inspiration. Seeing these guys from the 80s really brings back a flood of memories and emotions. Thank you so much for filming this! It was so fun to watch! Laughed uncontrollably! Btw the skate park at your parents house is awesome! A dream come true for anyone! Thanks for what you do Scotty! I know things have been rough for you over the past 4-5 years, it’s great to see you in good spirits! (Although I’m sure it’s not always easy) don’t mean to be awkward if you aren’t religious but I keep you in my prayers! You are an inspiration to all of us!! THANK YOU!!
I'm just a little South of you in Gloucester County.. My hey-day was when Norie was killing it for Haro in the '80s. Miami Hoppers was the trick of the day during one summer and everyone was doning them.. :) Some of the best years of my life (I'm 54 now) were my BMX days. I still have my last bike hanging in the garage- a white Hutch Trickstar.
Nourie is a legend, had been around since the first wave of big time pro riders. Dave and Joe Ciccman(?) Have a UA-cam channel called Fact or Freestyle, old dogs like myself enjoy it.. Some good stories from the 80s that the magazines could only hint at. Thanks for featuring this discipline of the sport Scotty! I remember watching the Dorkin videos when they came out
thats incredible ! i had to quit skateboarding in my 30's cause my body just could not take the abuse . its amazing to see these guys doing bmx tricks into their 50's . Scotty and team thank you for the coverage of the york flatland jam.
It's probably the "easier" form of BMX with regards to abuse/impact on your body, you're bikes constantly on flat ground so if you do fall you probably aren't falling very fast or hard unlike park riding where there can be a whole lot of speed and drops from heights involved with the bonus of possibly getting tangled up in the frame when you crash...i liken flatland to the equivalent of freestyle skateboarding, its still impressive as hell, but a less risky form of the sport.
These guys are awesome. Historians on two wheels, giving credit to the origins of each trick and showing their own flair and take on each one while keeping the traditions alive. Flatland has blown my mind since I was a young boy!
I always love when we get a little slice of the flatland scene here. Flatland is such a different beast than the standard BMX most ride, and it's always been super fascinating to me. These dudes are all insane.
The spin on the hopper was crazy. Love that you’re bringing all aspects of bikes to the forefront. Would love to see more videos like this and would also like info on whether donations can be made to some of these orgs.
I love that he just has a giant concrete pad in his backyard as a "skatepark" that also duals as a basketball court. All you need is a bike and some flat land. The pure creativity of this sport is amazing.
Love Dave Nourie. Saw him at the Dayton Old School Bike show. Super fun to watch. Love the Dorkin videos from back in the day. They were a HUGE influence on me and my buddies. Awesome video today.
I got his autograph in 85 at Kettering or Columbus for a Haro demo. Couple years I got to talk to Wilkerson at another demo. Which was like meeting Michael Jordan, Eddie Van Halen and Tony Hawk at the same time.
@@WOHBuckeye That's awesome. Yeah, growing up no doubt, it was exactly like that. I got to meet RL Osbourn a few months ago and felt the same way. So many of these guys were our heroes growing up and had HUGE impacts on our riding careers and helped us cultivate our love for BMX to this day.

Also it would be cool Scotty if you filmed and did a documentary on Flatland BMX riding teaching and showing people how it got started by interviewing people like Dave and them who have been around since it started that would be awesome to watch and learn about the history of Flatland BMX
Flatland was always an attractive riding style because you didn't need some fancy ramps or well designed area. You just found a basketball court or a parking lot and spent the day attempting to duplicate the tricks you saw someone else do. I never felt like a great rider, but I was always entertained. Thanks for the show. Love these videos. Joe
