    ** Note: Slip of of words, when shooting the video I said they were used like a hammer to drive stakes into the ground and give the idea they were tools. It is believed in history they were actually for harvesting rice a process called threshing. I didn’t think much of it so i just uploaded the video since the content of handling is what folks are actually looking for

    My brother practiced various martial arts since young, so we got a lot of weapons at our home. When I was in middle school, once I borrowed his nunchucks bc I wanted to imitate Bruce Lee but hit myself a lot eventually I gave up. Now, I'm in my mid 20s, trying my hand at this again as part of my workout and I'm definitely doing better. Thank you for the instructions, Sensei!

    That is very interesting to hear that they were used almost like a mallet to drive Stakes into the ground because I had always heard that they were like parts of a horse's bit clip together two of them and that's how you get the nunchucks

    • @SenseiDavid
      @SenseiDavid  5 років тому +1

      jeff... disregard that... that’s what i tell smaller kids and it just came out when i was making the video,they were actually used for threshing rice.. but that’s hard to explain to children.

    Thanks for sharing with me. I'm glad that you have explained the different way of holding the nunchaku. Most of the nunchaku 'performer' in UA-cam will hold it near the chain for more easy control so that they can do more fancy movement. For 'serious martial artist' like BRUCE LEE, he will hold it at the centre part so that when he attack the opponent, his nunchaku can reach longer range and make full use of the length instead make it shorter by holding near the chain area.

    • @SenseiDavid
      @SenseiDavid  7 років тому

      Thanks for taking the time to watch and your right...where to hold it really depends on what your trying accomplish. As I tell many...to learn for demonstration or practical application, both are skills and nothing wrong with either as long as we understand when to use what. :) thanks again for commenting

    • @SenseiDavid
      @SenseiDavid  7 років тому

      +GIBSONGASPER123 thanks for watching and commenting. i'm teaching what i've learned in my years and your right about the differences but in the end it's always good to know both because both take skill.

    I still don't get the one that starts from under your arm. When other people do it, it looks like it's making this nice, upward arc, but my shoulder is there. I haven't had much luck getting it out from my arm, and not obstructing it.

    • @Gunter_Severloh
      @Gunter_Severloh 7 років тому +1

      Are you referring to when the handle of the chuck hangs below your arma after you whipped it over your shoulder?
      If thats the case you want the handle to be about the middle of your arm, maybe a little closer to your armpit, you want to raise your arm to expose the handle to catch it, but imo you never start there, at least i dont.
      Is this what your referring too?

    • @hex40apy71
      @hex40apy71 7 років тому +1

      Keep trying. In the start its a little hard and you will hit your self, but after some times its easy. Your brain just need time to build muscle connection up. I have a lot of muscle connection fro the gym, so thats prob why my brain adapts so easy. Fun thing is I sucked utterly first 2 weeks, then I did not use my nunchuck for like a year. Found it a day, did a little swing, still sucked. 1 or 2 days later I tried again and suddenly a new patchway in my brain had opened up and suddenly I went from hitting my self 24/7 to not hitting my self any more ( stage 1 in learning to use the nunchuck )

      @Frank Rottach I think when it comes to real self defense...you have to go with what works not just what's cool....BUT i do believe the more skills you pick up the more you can adapt to potential circumstances... for example a backflip is not practical for self defense...but to have the skill to do one means you have a skill other do not..so maybe you can maneuver better

    Hey bud this is way to advance for a beginner bro! I've been practicing for 3 years, the under arm is called the easy up. that is what they start with follow by the arm catch. Nunchucks come in 3 different sizes! and size is determined by chain length! American Style= 3 inch chain, traditional Okinawan Style= 4 inch chain, Shaolin monk Style= 8 inch chain. You have a great idea and motivation I think you just need to take a little time and do some studying.

    • @SenseiDavid
      @SenseiDavid  7 років тому +6

      Rick thanks for adding your knowledge. you clearly have a deeper study of the nunchucks which is awesome and i hope others read this comment since you offer great input. I might ref your comments and chain length info in a future video Since its great to know this. my personal experience with nunchucks is not very deep since its never been a major focus in my years of martial arts but im fairly comfortable with the weapon to teach basics

    • @uryijam
      @uryijam 7 років тому +2

      SenseiDavid I personally appreciate people like you that would take the time to teach others in the art of nunchucks! I myself from personal experience knows how hard it is to get into basic nunchuck training! i started with heavy wooden nunchucks 3 string ended up with black and blue elbows ripped muscles in shoulders and at one point I had a few fingers and the side of my hands go numb! was all do do not properly training! trying to move steps beyond of what I was capable at the time! I'd say to re-do your videos! Start out way slow, like= Easy up- (which is the over the shoulder pass), in the forward strike catch. Edward Pizzo has a video out and is the perfect start for beginners.

      Rick Fs he also mentioned them as tools in the wrong fashion. But that is really more a lack of knowledge in Asian farming tools. They are used for threshing which is the act of breaking tall plants such as wheat like crops or getting rid of weeds.

    • @SenseiDavid
      @SenseiDavid  6 років тому +1

      Well your somewhat right.....it had various applications! as far as the video it was first thing that came to mind as i was shooting, I do not script out the videos and just go with the flow. most people have no idea what a bridle is which is another historical application of the tool or what threshing means so the stake in the ground was a simple one to say :P thanks for commenting

      Most martial arts weapons were weapons disguised as tool. They were weapons first. They were disguised due to dynasty rulers. That's the reason most martial arts were learned in secret. Nunchucks were used to shuck rice and soybeans, not to drive steaks in the ground. Just like the sai, it was used to set holes for seeds and replanting rice.

    Nunchucks were not used to drive stakes in the ground! seriously? That doesn't even make sense if they had such a great understanding of physics why would they use a weapon designed for a snap type strike to be used where a Thrust type strike would be needed even a big rock would be a better choice for driving in stakes then nunchucks...
    It's believed they were used in threshing rice.
