Correct. The first time you participate in even the most amateur of racing, like electric go karts at the mall, and you see someone else who knows what they are doing you will have your first "ah ha!" moment that performance driving is really hard and you really suck at it. The first time you try an autocross event is also sufficiently embarrassing.

@@dohczeppelin37 it shouldnt be embarassing. People who are only good at one thing shame new comers for rookie mistakes and dumb things that really have no effect on the rest of your life. Thats just gate keeping. Falling off your bike wasnt embarassing, even though it seems painfully easy not to do now. Messing up a turn on a go kart track, forgetting a step when trying out a smal rock climbing wall, or failing to properly fit your skis on the first go round, that's not embarassing, thats just educational.

Well to be fair the main character is an elite stunt driver.
Yea it's a fancy art house film but at the end of the day the films main plot hinges on the fact that Ryan Gosling is an elite Driver.
So yea it still fits Bills silly narrative.

    • @NKA23
      @NKA23 7 років тому +8

The thing is, that these movies are about ELITE drivers. Not just people, who can drive cars but people, who drive cars as if the car was part of their body. That IS a special skill. Let´s take formula one race driving as an example. Take the average driver, put him behind the controls of any f1 race car and let him try to drive it on a f1 race track as fast as the car can go. He will crash and die. Don´t get me wrong, I don´t enjoy most movies about elite drivers, I enjoyed "Drive" though. But saying these movies were just about "people driving cars, which is not so hard", is like saying that "American Sniper" was about somebody squeezing a trigger (anybody could do that, right?).

    • @RPMguitar92

@@newcoc4105 there are actually A LOT of films pertaining to running or that contain ass loads of running, have main Characters who are free runners/can do parkour, etc.
One of the highest rated and most award winning films of all time, Forrest Gump, is almost holistically about a man who spent his entire life running as fast as he could after barely being able to walk as a child.
Even then, just like the driving based films referenced in the video, driving isn't ALL that's happening. Hell, in Baby Driver, Drive, the first few Fast & Furious movies, etc - the majority of plot is laid out when driving ISN'T happening and the primary aspect of the film being partially about driving is based on the main character doing it *well*, not just driving normally. Lmao, look at the Tansporter series - it's FILLED with non driving dramatic scenes, fight scenes, etc, and being a good driver is nothing but the occupation of the main character.
Which is why Maher's comparison between Baby Driver and someone driving an Uber is ridiculous. Because the film in of itself is not about normally driving a car through traffic - just like Forrest Gump wasn't primarily about a normal guy going out for a jog.

I just turned 29 the other day (Oct 13) and just last month moved from NY to South Korea in a "need to do something radically different because my life feel so stagnant and I have no ties to anyone or anything really" and now I suffer so much anxiety getting used to my job and the language barrier (beginner Korean). Also just finding people to bond with and not succumbing to the loneliness. And funny thing? I was such a homebody in NY and never cared to go out anywhere most of the time. But here I feel like every fiber of me is telling me to go out and experience things and it is a weird and disconcerting feeling and I get anxious for not doing so - , I could have stayed home in NY if I wanted to saty inside and not get out there,. I'm comparing myself to other expats who seem to have blended so seamlessly into their surroundings and work life and question my decision and myself as a person. @@laker_fanatic3985 driving like the speed limit and following the rules of the road well is far more of a challenge than driving fast in traffic. Anyone can bob and weave through 55mph traffic, but when you are going the speed limit you are against every other driver and yourself. When you go ten over you are swerving around people and creating hazards at every intersection you pass. Running a track (especially alone) is far easier that being a good driver. Actual racing is much harder than any of that though, as everyone else is going just as fast as you are and they are all taking estimated risks trying to assume what the other drivers will do. Rip Dale Earnhart or whatever his name is, or maybe that guy that Tony Stewart ran over on the dirt track.

@Zuma Zuma driving fast in traffic is reckless. Driving fast on an obstacle course or in a race requires tremendous skill. You have to train to know where to cut in and where to let out, when to accelerate and when to slow down, as well as how to not over-exert the vehicle you operate. On top of all that in a race you have usually have a pack of cars all traveling over 100 mph, that mean every action is made assuming no one else is trying to move where you are moving to. If you watch a race closely you will be able to see the fear in their driving. No one wants to do it like Dale, just for him.

As a cop that has done my share of "advanced driving" courses to be able to turn my sirens on, exceed the speed limits and pursue other vehicles, I wholeheartedly agree with Bill. All the instructors treat it like it's some world class elite specialist unit, when in reality it's all about 1 thing: don't be reckless.
Yes Bill is being a little facetious but at the core of it he is right. Driving is pretty much the ability to co-ordinate feet and hands to respond to what your eyes and ears are telling you. It's not for everyone, but by and large, I'd say that bad drivers are just careless, not incompetent.
The overwhelming majority of people I have pulled over, given tickets to and/or arrested are dicks with massive egos and bad attitudes that lead them to drive dangerously. This is a personality flaw, not a an indicator of difficult driving a car is.

    - Wheelman co-led by Caitlin Carmichael.
My point is that Bill’s point is moot when you break it all down. Sometimes the women is the hero (Laura Croft, Kill Bill, Wonder Women), and sometimes the man is the hero (Batman, Superman, Captain America).
Why does everything have to be portrayed every which way? Why can’t people just enjoy the differences in film, and stop trying to change the narrative.

    • @Mr_Uni

Sophia Bogard That’s not the argument. The argument is why Hollywood seems to portray men as the type who do it. Men don’t have control over what movies Hollywood produces. Hollywood knows what people want though. That’s why men love to watch movies with cars and woman like to watch romcoms. You don’t hear many men complaining why they always portray woman as the compassionate, caring, and nurturing type, even though it’s BS to assume that men can’t be compassionate, caring, and nurturing. Trust me, as a male who works in a predominately “woman” type job (meaning that the job has historically been a woman’s job) I know that sexism can go both ways. The point is, we don’t make the movies, we just find it entertaining. So don’t bash men for something they are not even producing. It would seem very unfair for a small minority of men who control Hollywood are to represent all men.

I'm talking about people who don't know where the Queen of England is from. People who don't know what country Tokyo, Japan is in. These people have driver's licenses, and instead of paying FULL ATTENTION to the road they are sending a text, taking a selfie, or checking their instant gram when their hands belong at ten and two on the wheel and need to have some patience instead of a need for speed.

I loved my dad and he's passed away, but I still think he was dumb for watching NASCAR, it's more interesting watching ants, I was watching an ant kill a fly, most fascinating fight I've ever seen in real life. The fly was 10 times it's size and had flight, but when he landed and walked too close the fly jabbed so fast and hard the fly fell over on its back, it landed supine in a mud puddle. The ant proceeded to attack striking the fly from every point going in quick circles around jabbing it's monstrously sized victim, the fly struggled, but not long. You could see the fight was over all too quickly, the fly was unable to get itself unstuck as it lost more and more strength getting unstuck just to find its wing flap back into the mud puddle when struck. When it was over the ant started to assess its victim. Yes, it isn't moving. He started to pull on his victim, time to carry his lunch home. He struggled with this as the ants wing was still suctioned to the ground. The ant realized his effort of pulling was futile, he started pushing on the fly going around it and pushing it, alternating between attempts to push and pull. He managed to get the fly outta the muck and dragged him home.
I get for some this is not exciting, but the NASCAR story goes he starts the car he drives left he drives left he drives left he drives left then he begins to continue driving left, then another turn left. Or is it right I don't know I'd rather be watching bugs fight. In fact I find the day by day growth of the grass more exciting.

...there they go... turning left, now turning right... is it going to turn left again or will it go right? Oh the suspense... OMG, it picked up a little rock!
vs NASCAR... and they're off! Turning left... now turning left... still turning left... how long can this go on? OMG, someone passed a car!
Maybe you should try just watching NASCAR wreck videos. I get the feeling you would find them just as entertaining as watching bugs fight.

You know, I was thinking about this the other day, and I found the perfect analogy for toxic masculinity. Toxic masculinity is like being a sports fan. Actually, not a sports fan, but rather what we call in the UK a football (soccer) hooligan. Someone who entrenches themselves so deeply into the competitive element, that it embodies everything they do. They enjoy the game, and that's fine, more power to you. But it's not enough for them to just enjoy the game, they believe that the only way to truly support their team is to actively attack other people for liking a different one. They engage in violent and destructive behaviour, because they are too far into the mentality. And when people remind them that it's just a game, they feel inadequate and silly, however they choose not to roll it back, they choose to lash out, even so far as to when they reflect about whether it is worth it, they chastise themselves for feeling any doubt. And not just that, they get enraged that others aren't as into it as they are, or people engage that they specifically don't expect to, possibly even being better fans than they are.
And this toxic masculinity pretty much sums up every negative behaviour trait, from seeing help as weakness, not being able to express anything other than impotent rage, as well as homophobia, biphobia, or transphobia. Yeah, you can pin down those prejudices into toxic masculinity. It's people who like a game, but cannot understand that some people aren't into it, or feel emasculated when someone who they think shouldn't be a fan of the game enjoys it. They think that a man has to be like a football hooligan, and when presented with the notion that its unhealthy, it doesn't matter, that there are other ways of expressing fanaticism, or that some people do it more dignified or even better, they lash out.
