Wes Borland is so fucking criminally underrated, dude played some of the most inventive, unique riffs while maintaining a laid-back minimalism that suited the band.
It entirely depends on the focus, if it's the riifs or if it's rap verses. Nu metal, I think, is a poor descriptor of a genre. It is super strange with Limp Biscuit being compared to Korn or Themata-era Karnivool.

I think Mudvayne's first album is the pinnacle of nu-metal. It's actually more prog than anything, I think. It was so good and it got me interested in weird time signatures and stuff as a kid.

Korn was around well before Limp Bizkit, Jon Davis of Korn actually got Fred and the guys their first record deal iirc. Limp Bizkit was like '99, Korn started in the early to mid 90's. Also, relating to Claire's little note about Queen of the Damned OST, was mostly written and composed by Jon Davis, and he does the singing voice of Lestat in the movie, plus has a cameo (tries to scalp tickets to Jesse, the female lead character)
It was Fieldy actually. Fred Durst used to be a tattoo artist and did some work on Fieldy in 1995. He got a Limp Bizkit demo from Durst and passed it on to Ross Robinson. They were signed and released their first album Three Dollar Bill, Y'all in 1997.
It's interesting they can shred harmonic minor licks at 240bpm but kinda struggle to get the feel of these simple riffs right. There's a certain technicality in getting "simple" riffs just right.
I was actually glad they played break stuff correctly with the hammer on in the beginning and all.. it’s a small detail but makes all the difference in how it sounds and feels!

Doing a four levels of Nu metal video and playing Only Korn and Limp Biskit is basically a sacrilege.. Deftones-My own Summer and Anything From one of the first three slipknot albums should have been here. You played the most simple riffs of metal history in this video..
You've both inspired me to take my guitar playing a little more seriously. I must say i've been playing 5 hours a day for the past two weeks, and I'm absolutely exhausted. Keep up the great content.

I’m sure you’ve considered it, but you guys should do a versus four levels of death metal where you each pick a band in a genre and go back-and-forth 🤘🏼
I'm so, SO bummed you weren't here in Paris on December 3rd for Faces of Death. Learned about you not being here last minute, I hope you'll come play here soon!
As a guitar player who first got into nu metal and then transitioned into more extreme stuff before finding my way back, I honestly always find it fascinating how guitarists like you guys who are primarily from the more extreme or technical camp, can play circles around me but feel a bit ... off when it comes to these swinging more shuffle like rhythms while I struggle slightly with super tight rhythm stuff. I mean absolutely no disrespect, I just mean to say it's crazy how people's brains are just wired differently.
I watched a few videos about Korn and was pretty surprised that they were heavily inspired by Mr. Bungle and that they refer to that weird dissonant chord as "The Mr. Bungle chord".
Yah, Korn has a quite lot of different influences. Cypress Hill, Beastie Boys, RHCP, FNM, Mr. Bungle, Pantera etc.... The list goes on. They threw all that together in such a unique way that no one ever since has able to copy even if they tried.
These edits are absolutely hilarious. Thats a lot of effort that probably went unnoticed by a lot of people because it flowed so well. A bit like an Archspire song now I come to think of it….
I feel we were very lucky with nu-metal, not the happiest music but a very wide genre and awesome bands. I know it made me get a guitar. Limp Bizkit's Chocolate Starfish was the first album I bought & I still adore it. Love the way the songs got more serious on that track list & Boiler is a masterpiece.
I recently went through the old "soggy digestive" discog and I thought some of the riffs were fucking excellent. I vaguely remember throwing them on when I started playing but not really listening to the actual riffs. I might see you in Whelans then so!

The verse part to Korns "Here to stay" is still one of the most gnarly riffs ever, fight me. Barres, baggy pants and those steel ball necklaces.
