For those wondering about real world mileage, we've had our '22 Sienna Platinum for about 10 months now and on long road trips, it gets around 35-36mpg, with one trip nearly 40mpg but around town during our normal day to day usage we're averaging about 30mpg, where we live its basically all hilly, twisty, back roads with little highway driving during a normal week. So if you don't do much highway driving, you should expect closer to 30mpg instead of 35. Still WAY better than the non-hybrid competition.

Yup. Our 22 XLE AWD we average 32-33 at 75 mpg with four adults and gear for a five hour trip.

Toyota really oughtta shoehorn the Prime powertrain in here as fast as they can. I know there are logistical challenges with battery production and platform packaging, but this is the vehicle that really needs it as opposed to the RAV4. Sure, it’s nice to have as an option in the RAV4, but with how much hauling this theoretically is designed to do, makes much more sense to offer it here imo.

    • @valdius85

Unfortunately, "making sense" and making money doesn't alight fully. :)
RAV4 is the most popular unibody vehicle in America, so it gets the priority.

I agree with this but with a catch (a big one).
If you have any number of elevation changes or winding country roads, you will definitely see a dip in the performance. It's still amazing!! Winter's here in Canada will greatly impact the higher performance on the electric side as well. Right now I'm getting over 36 mpg, however, in the coldest part of winter I was seeing numbers as low as 26. That's mainly because of using all the accessories to warm up the car such as heated seats, heated steering wheel and the biggest culprit of them all... the internal combustion engine for warming up the cabin space. That engine has to run a heck of a lot more if you live in a colder area.
      I own a 2022 sienna LE FWD.

I rented a 2021 Sienna with the hybrid, but purchased the plug in 2021 Pacifica. I was disappointed with the Sienna engine noise and feeling of power when it was loaded with 4 passengers and full size Rottweiler. I also find most of my daily trips can be electric only in the Pacifica! Ability to drive 180 miles each way to my daughter’s university without range anxiety is a win. I’ll take the $7500 rebate next year, and I don’t plan to keep the Chrysler forever, so not worried about long term reliability, but my 300C continues to do well!

The ID Buzz is going to start around $70K when normally contented. The Sienna when loaded (Platinum) runs about $58K (including destination). I wouldn't mind spending more for the Buzz as long as it has nearly similar dimensions but it seems the Buzz is going to be a narrow van and probably couldn't do 3 carseats in the middle row. I can't see Honda or Toyota making a BEV minivan this decade.
If Kia made an electric Carnival I would be on the wait list.
I use my Model X as my daily driver and road trip vehicle although I do find myself grumbling about the lack of space when it's loaded with luggage and gear. When we need bigger for going to the airport with lots of luggage I fall back to my Odyssey - it eats gas but gets the job done.
Alex, if you try to buy a well equipped Sienna at a deal in Southern California it's going to be above $50k and much closer to $60K - the Model X is therefore ONLY double not triple the price. Still a stupid premium to pay and you'll never make that money back in fuel savings, but I'm willing to burn my wallet to help push the technology. In an ideal world, people should be buying/renting small BEVs like a Smart, Mini, Leaf or M3 for daily commute and have an option to cheaply rent a large vehicle for roadtrips or work uses - unfortunately our society isn't set up to have communal vehicle usage. Maybe with autonomous vehicles things will change.

@@chezzyperson3339 Well Chrysler only has 2 vehicles for sale in the US, so wouldn't surprise me if Stellantis wants to put that as their testbed. I think they said they're making a BEV Charger and I figure that will probably come out on the same platform since it's large body vehicle and not a small 4 person sedan.
Chrysler has never been shy about cutting edge with the minivan market. I think the only reason Toyota made the Sienna hybrid was because of CAFE standards since their Highlanders and RAVs outsell their Camry/Corolla to non-fleet buyers.

7:19 actually, Ni-MH batteries are more expensive than li-ion batteries per kWh. However, like you said, the air-cooled system is cheaper and simpler than liquid cooling, and Ni-MH batteries don't require liquid cooling like li-ion batteries do, since they perform much better in extreme temperatures (hot & cold) compared to li-ion. Also, Ni-MH batteries have a longer cycle life than li-ion batteries, which is important in a hybrid since the hybrid battery is constantly being discharged and recharged at high rates during normal operation.

This is the exact analysis I did last September(except I didn't consider the Tesla Model X lol) when looking for a replacement for my Odyssey. I have a family of 6. I went Kia Sorento PHEV; with the government rebate here it is basically the same price as a Sienna LE AWD. The Kia is too small for a "road trip" vehicle but I have a Suburban for that, and a "road trip" usually involves towing our 32' Travel Trailer. The Suburban is mostly parked as I work from home. The Kia will be the main "errand" vehicle. I'm up in Ontario Canada so the gas prices were always more expensive here than for down in the States, so economically the PHEV made sense already last September before the war. The way I figure it, the gas savings will offset the cost of the new vehicle over a used vehicle (especially since used vehicles are crazy priced right now). One way to look at it - the oil companies are paying most of my car note. Last I heard the vehicle should be delivered Early-mid May.

As an owner of the 2019 Honda Odyssey, I really like the fact that Toyota is making a hybrid minivan for the market. In late 2018, I was deciding between the Sienna and Odyssey. The Odyssey won me over at the time of purchase with IIHS top safety pick, Android Auto support, and more features for the money like adaptive cruise control even at lower trim. The Sienna at the time was just too dated.
However, I am still not sold on the Sienna in it's current form. First, the non removable 2nd row seats and 8+ second 0-60 are deal breakers for me. I really wish Toyota would make the 2nd row seats removable and offer a Sienna Prime model. They should take the powertrain from the 300hp AWD RAV4 Prime and put it in the Sienna. I would love to have the extra power / AWD to climb Tejon pass on the I-5 and trips to Lake Tahoe in winter with my whole family and their belongings. I would definitely use the charge hold feature to save up energy for those highway hill climbs. If I can get 35 miles EV range, I can probably drive 90+% of my trips on electricity alone for local errands/commutes. Then on long family road trips, I don't have to worry about charging. If Toyota can really offer a Sienna Prime model I might even forgive them for not offering removable second row.
I know Chrysler Pacifica has a plug in option and very flexible interior. But, I am not sold on their brand due to reliability and quality concerns.

Pacfica plug in hybrid is the closest competitor. Tesla model x is a small minivan and then there would be some suvs al with less space than a minivan. Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, toyota highlander etc

Aside from the hybrid and some Lexus like features like the power tilt telescope wheel and 4 zone climate control and ottomans, man did Toyota really screw up this van
The cargo space has shrunk significantly and the second row seats don’t even come out 🤦‍♂️
The last generation sienna had class leading cargo space. 38 cubic feet behind 3rd row; 88 cubic feet behind 2nd row; 110 cubic feet with the 2nd middle seats slid all the way forward; 150 cubic feet with the 2nd row seats taken out. To this day that’s still higher than most minivans and just about tied w the Kia carnival
I’ve also heard the interior isn’t luxurious nor is it visually interesting like the carnival.

    • @LamNguyen-sr1sy
      @LamNguyen-sr1sy 2 роки тому

The Carnival has terrible access to third-row when it has captain chairs on second row. The boxy shape gives the Carnival more head-room space than the Sienna but the leg-room space suffers big time. It has the worst fuel economy in the minivan segment and only comes in FWD.

Interesting. I bought my Model X specifically because of too many issues with my Sienna and Odyssey. The Sienna had the doors open on the freeway and was lemoned, the Odyssey had horrible phantom drain and needed constant jumping but was otherwise reliable (luckily no AC or trans issues @ 123K).

@@Tokamak3.1415 the X is an amazing car to behold, however it’s one of the lowest scoring cars in reliability on CR. I would buy the Sienna if the second row seats were easily designed to be removed and replaced easily. I was hoping that the Venza was a bit bigger inside than the RAV4. Now I’m waiting to see the redesign of the 2023 CRV hybrid. We Just replaced my wife’s 2001 Subaru Forester with a Leaf SV plus as our around town runabout. I’m looking to replace my 2014 Subaru Legacy with a Toyota or Honda hybrid for retirement road travel.
USA has too many different ev charging station standards compared to Europe . That and Long range EV costs make a hybrid a better choice for road trip travel today in America.

@@MechayaAlta I own an X and an Odyssey and had Sienna I lemon lawed. I was looking for something to replace my Odyssey and after 3 years wait I gave up and bought an X because I know Honda and Toyota weren't going to make one this decade.
I would have loved to have something with minivan doors instead of the stupid falcon doors. I mean the falcon doors do have their advantages at times, but they are less practical than sliding doors and most certainly more expensive to repair than sliding doors. I kept the Odyssey because the X doesn't cut it for moving cargo, only good for moving 5-7 people. So I'm still somewhat reliant on a gas vehicle for now.
Having said that, the Tesla has been my most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. It may be a sample size of one, but if you look at it from an engineering point of view the BEV should naturally be more reliable than an ICE. Even the lowly GM Bolt is GMs more reliable vehicle (compared to a Escalade) and I'm sure the Leaf is Nissan's sans issues with battery longevity. CR's rating system is just plain stupid. Having done medical research in the past I'm critical of "studies" and CR's methodologies are just not rational. The Tesla X is not built as well as a Lexus ES350, but the interior will undoubtedly last longer than any Mercury/Lincoln/Porsche/BMW/MB product I've owned. Porsche builds wonderful driving machines, but after 4 years those buttons need replacing and the CD changer will no longer work unlike a 2000 Corolla - the Tesla is somewhere in between. The drivetrain, however, will best anything Toyota offers at present sans maybe the new BZ4X. Remember Tesla did the EV drivetrain for Toyota's first BEV.
As far as charging standards - there's really only 2 in the US. Nissan's Chademo is dead - it's only Tesla and J1772 CCS - and the Tesla can use 1772. Both do the same thing - just have plastic and metal in different locations.
For road trips I agree, at least within the US. I drove from LA to Bryce, UT and LA to Mammoth with my X. It added a little extra time but not too much, with any cheaper EV sans the new Ioniq the charge times would be more significant. The US is just so large a country and people do sometimes drive 500 miles in a day. That's unheard of in Europe (trains everywhere) - you could be driving through 6 countries doing that. But honestly if I'm going to go past 500 miles I'm flying and that uses the same CO2 on newer narrow bodies, but some will still miss out of stopping at shady rest stops and eating weird roadside stand foods.

Don't understand why a EV minivan makes any sense in terms of cost when a van needs 150kW of batteries (costs ~$20k) to have any reasonable range when a hybrid minivan gets 35 mpg. But logical hybrids aren't sexy so it's full speed ahead with EV mandates in Europe...

Why would a minivan need a 150kwh battery? It’s a slightly taller vehicle, but aside from that I think would be pretty efficient when driving through the air. A 60-100kwh pack would be pretty usable for most people.
