We purchased a large home just outside Bangkok in 2012. Initially, the quality of life was exceptional! At the eight-year point, traffic congestion, pollution, and rat-race of the big city pushed us to look for a new home "in the country." We purchased 10 rai of farmland 40 km NE of Chiang Rai for 3m baht. We finished building a new custom home on 4-rai of walled plot in 2022. Life is excellent except for the three months of inferior air quality. We are now considering a condo closer to the coast for part-time use during the burning season.

      @philipvclarke4902 3 місяці тому +2

Sadly the air quality gets worse and worse with each passing year......Speaking from 30 years experience living here.
      Nothing will change.
Much of that pollution also comes from neighboring countries who also burn crops.
Soon it will be more than 60% - 70% of the year and the tourists will slow to a trickle and expats will eventually relocate.
      I remember visiting Chiang Mai is the 1970's - !980's.....LOVELY ^_^

Excellent interview, Adam. By the way, I fully understand Peter's frustration with the motoring and motorcycling behavior in Thailand. It's really a national problem. Nowadays, many Thai people get degrees from the western universities such as USA, UK, Australia, Germany, and Japan. Many MNCs operated in Thailand hire these people with Thai Salary in which it is a lot lower than the west. These people can handle more than 1 languages with same technical skills. It is harder to get the job here, but it is still possible if you have lots of experiences.

    • @noah_shepherd

Most MNCs actually pay very decent salaries to well educated qualified locals. Most of them are every bit as capable as doing the same job as a foreigner. Yes, salaries are generally lower than the west, as is the cost of living. It's all relative.

I'm normally not critical of the guests on this channel, however, I have to say my peace and I hope Adam doesn't delete my comment. I find it rather shameful that Peter isn't fluent in Thai after living in Thailand for over 10 years! There is absolutely no excuse for him, especially knowing his Thai wife for over 3 years. This is a common attitude among people from first-world countries. The belief that English-speaking immigrants in Thailand expect the local Thais to adapt to their Western culture which includes speaking only in English. Peter should have been fluent in Thai by his second or third year if he had made an effort. It's great that he is now learning Thai but after 10 years, really???

There are many neighbourhoods similar to Peter’s all over the outer sections of the city. Peter’s place is close to a well-known shopping centre called ‘Mega Bangna’ about 15 KM’s east of what most people would refer to as ‘Central Bangkok’

@@adamparker21 thanks for the very quick reply, im familiar with Mega Bang Na, I always thought those places are much much further away from bkk ie only in the provinces. Thanks again 👍

1 minute in and as an America I hear him being offered a week or two of leave from work and feeling like, wow, look at Australia! Who gets offered time off??? (I always work high up in corporate) I'm not sure I can hander the rest of the story now if it just gets even more accommodating and positive.

So I have 20 years experience, but only the Associates degree that was required when I started my job 20 years ago.. ALSO a BS degree is not required at all in my field. Why is a BS degree so important? For me it would only be getting a bunch of filler classes to say I had the degree, which to me is a waste of time and money. I would love to morph my career into something more hybrid, like online with some on site. And the pay would not have to be 'Western" type. As long as I could afford to live well. Living in a place like this guy would be ideal, except I don't want to have a partner, not interested in getting married and dealing with all that. Any more tips for finding a job? The ONE website is okay, but there should be more resources.. since this guy has been there 10 years, I am assuming he doesn't really stay connected to the different resources for a job, or just doesn't want to give them up...

It comes down to what Immigration and the employer request unfortunately.
Peter did mention he had a friend with no degree, and that having experience ( > 5 years in your industry ) is considered favourably by immigration. If you have 20 YOE, I'd expect most thai employers to accept that in lieu of a degree AND immigration to not sweat about it.
Everyone's situation is different, in your case - I think you'd be fine. (I've worked and lived in Thailand many years and seen a few people sans degrees employed legally).
In terms of property like Peter's in/around bangkok or other parts of Thailand, rentals are always an option.
For purchasing a house, unfortunately the only legal way to do it (as foreigners cannot legally own land) is to be married to a thai or be a citizen.
There are... ways, however they are not legal, and I'll leave the risk vs reward calculation and the googling as an exercise to the reader.
In terms of job sources: The video's obviously been edited to keep it flowing and punchy - there may have been more advice that was cut.
Also, Peter works in IT, it'd be hard to give generic advice as there are specialist companies that cater to IT specifically - Gummy Bear recruitment for example, and giving advice that was too narrow would alienate some of the audience too, imo.

He could embrace thai lifestyle diet and exercise. Not to judge but many western men face the same issue as western women are non traditional.
Men who want a life leave western countries

The interviewer's puny voice and ineffective follow up questions nearly made me turn off, but the Aussie guy is worth listening to.
