Deadly Premonition to me is like a three legged dog. It's painful to look at and makes you feel sorry for it, but the more time you spend with it, the more charming it is. It tries so hard to be something that it clearly didn't have the budget/dev team size for, but you can tell they still carried on due to their passion and drive. You can have a big budget game with photorealistic graphics and an Oscar winning cast but still have it lack any personality or passion. Then you have a game like Deadly Premonition, terrible in the modern spectrum of gaming, but just charming enough to actually work and amass a cult following who will stick by this game until the end.
Very much agreed! Btw, the publisher saying "It needs guns or else it won't sell in the west!" has to be one of the most roundabout ways to insult an audience. But while I found the shooting sequences unnecessary and unfun, I didn't think they were _that_ offensive. Most standard enemies can safely be ignored and 9 hours for the mill seems way exaggerated. I think the charmingness heavily outweighs the rough spots and the game manages to create it's own believable world, mainly through it's solid (if quirky) writing.
The creator even knew that the final boss was absolutely bonkers, decent first phase, terrible second phase(creepy) and the cutscene after the final phase(also weak) is so satisfying

Some fun details! The shooter segments used to be way harder in the original release. But they realized they sucked so they made them way easier and and gave you access to the broken ass infinite weapons. Vent lady goes down in like, 3 hits if you can get Clint's Wrench although you should really have other stronger weapons like the shotgun or magnum before encountering the first Vent lady.. Also the deal with the demon shit is pretty well explained, albeit still out of nowhere. Morgan is tracking several seemingly unrelated murders that all leave red seeds at the crime scene. It turns out Kaysen, the demon, is pedaling the seeds all over the country along with the rumor that consuming them while sacrificing 4 people who also consumed them would grant you immortality. Basically all of these unrelated murders were attempts at this process and George is the first to actually make it. The trees also need a sacrifice to grow, connecting them to even more murders. Another giant "George is the Killer" sign is that if you go to his house at any point he just has a giant red tree growing in his backyard. Swerey revealed that the true villain of Deadly P is Willie, Kaysen's dog, who is the one who'd relay orders to Kaysen from the Red Room. This is not a joke all of these details are real.
"Many bloggers criticized the game's obvious references and similarities to the 1990-1991 television show, Twin Peaks, which led the game developers to scale the references back somewhat." For all it's blatant ripping off, the product we get to play is SCALED BACK from the original... oh my.
Didn't Swery actually run into legal trouble with David Lynch because of all the similarities? (Which led to the Super Best Friends in-joke that Swery has never seen Twin Peaks.)
I don’t think anything public ever came out about David Lynch/the Twin Peaks people stepping to Swery due to the similarities between TP and Rainy Woods, so nobody‘s sure if that actually went down, but Rainy Woods _was_ eventually canceled and replaced with Deadly Premonition, which is basically the same game but with slightly less TP influence (like... 5% less, it seems lol), so I’d imagine they were forced to change a few things behind the scenes and ended up fully rebranding along the way. Hey Purposeless Rabbitholes , you should really check out Artificial Mind & Movement’s forgotten gem, Wet. I know, the title is weird and when you look at the cover you may want instinctively write it off as yet another obscure lackluster edgy action game (in which it totally is btw) but I can assure you the gameplay is something special. Imagine if you will, if John Wick and Black Widow had a child who grew up to be a badass dual armed acrobatic with a sword and is living her secluded life as the most pissed off gun for hire. Now cover all that in a coat of olden western indie rock that just makes you feel grimy in the best of ways. It’s ridiculously entertaining with the main character being your stereotypical badass hitman but it’s done just right enough to be believable and not cause you to roll your eyes like all other characters trying to be the coolest hotshot. Admittedly the gameplay could be refined and improved on seeing how most things you do are contextual but it does give you enough freedom to where you can take out hoards of baddies in pretty much any highflying way you want. Freedom in movement in this game is more like SMPS4 than SMWOS. It’s still good fun to jump and fly about but it could be better. Honestly I think it’s mostly due to the fact this a somewhat outlandish combat system, or at least in regards to what I know and the time it came out. Maybe it wasn’t that big of a deal. Point is, this game is absolutely the kind of game that’ll fit so well in your channel, it’s absolutely worth your time and it definitely deserves more attention than it has gotten. i'm drunk right now and i'm sure that the developers created this game while they were drunk you have to be drunk to fully appreciate this game i wasn't sure about posting this comment, than i saw the sandwic cutscene and i knew i had to do it
Sorry for commenting a 3 year old video, but I loved that the draft was just lorem ipsum giberish which is probably how it felt simply trying to summarize the plot. Well done.
What's going on with Zach and York is almost certainly DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). When people are very young, their identities aren't unified. We have several parts that are separate from one another. Usually these parts come together and solidify but if someone suffers serious childhood trauma the parts stay separate. People with DID form new parts (which are also called alters) to help them deal with different aspects of life and function normally. Everything you described is pretty much spot on.
I remembered seeing a game review for Deadly Premonition YEARS ago. Australia had a channel on ABC called Good Game, which was hosted by 2-3 game journalists and I remember how they talked about how weird this game was along with the correlation to Twin Peaks. This game is smashing 10/10
Akira Kurosawa once successfully sued Sergio Leone over the fact that "A Fistful of Dollars" is a retelling of Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" - just throwing that out there for contrast. lol
Kept hearing that, so I bought both of them, and watched them back to back. Aside from some similarities (both characters tell someone to make coffins, right before the killing, both characters get a brutal beating from the villains) they seemed different enough. If Deadly Premonition somehow isn’t a ripoff, then surely Fistful isn’t.
I just found your channel and I gotta say, I really liked this vid! I’m definitely subscribing and I’m excited to see how you grow as a content creator in the future👍

In Deadly Premonition 1, you can tell they tried real hard to make the game not suck even if they didn’t have the budget to do so. In Deadly Premonition 2, they tried so hard to make the game suck because they think the reason we played the 1st one is because of how bad it was.
This may sound odd. But I get genuinely sad when the "In conclusion" screen comes up. Because I could watch your videos all day and I don't want it to end.
This keeps popping up in my recommended, so I'll keep watching it. I had no interest in this game before watching this, and have little afterward, but man I enjoyed this. That sandwich scene in particular is a trip. Every word, sound, and frame was a roller coaster. You definitely earned this subscription!
For anyone who watched the best friends playthrough, we finally know where the hell Quint was, all those hours Pat spent angrily smoking outside his trailer.
it was like every damn episode i tuned into they were on the hunt for quint. i almost forgot what the game was even about they were looking for him so much. QUINT.
This is one of those games i HAVE to play, just to find out about how bad it really is. Let's plays and videos about it arent the same. Good video regardless
I remember seeing IGN's review, and paying the game no mind until I saw Jim Sterling's "10/10" review. It really is fascinating. The plot definitely takes a turn, and goes absolutely batshit. The cult film conversations between York/Zach are worth the price alone. But that PC port....talk about horror.
Thank you for this hilarious review. Subbed. Back on the 360, I rented this here game, and couldn't last more than 5 minutes. The jank! Oh the jank! The jank The jank The jank THE JANK! The whole thing with Zach... I had a feeling Agent York WAS Zach as I was watching your vid. Heehee... XD
Beginning of the video: I hate it, I hate it, I hate it, its dogshit and the worst thing I've ever played. Middle of the video: It's so bad it's good. End of the video: This shit blew my mind!
Found you from an Oneyplays comment and I’ve always wondered why this game is so beloved/reviled! Your commentary and general opinions of the game are spot-on and hilarious! Hope you continue your YT career!
The pug!!!!! I giggled at the comment, but then you said you got it animated and then it went on for so long and every time the pug showed up I just laughed harder and now I'm crying. I haven't laughed like that in so long and today was such a bad day. Thank you so much.
Honestly I don't know how York could pass a psych test to become an FBI agent. Also a dude called SuperGreatFriend made a great full playthrough of this game.
I haven't watched the full video yet, so I don't know if it will come up later but the SGF let's play may be kind of upsetting for the guy who made this video because of how easily SGF dealt with the vent enemies. It's not really logical but the best way to deal with them is to hit them with the guitar you can get from a side quest. They die in several hits
It's explained in the second game that he basically didn't, he did training's on physical and intelligence test. But he didn't do the rest due to his father legacy, he was considered a legend and the head of the FBI took him on the spot, it is why he can get away with so much shit, since he's the favorite
Okay that whole "Zach" thing caught me more off guard, probably than most people, because that's literally my name. What makes it even more cool was that twist at the end. *This game cannot be more perfect for me.*
When I saw your review at the beginning I was like oh... it's going to be too long... You kept me entertained. Good job (seriously) And by the way I've never played the game and I think I wont either
Welp, today has been weird enough ( nostalgia for pepsiman and “bury the light” monobloc documentaries levels of weird) that being reminded of this baffling game left me laughing through the entire video, great job.

I dont know what this channel is, why ive never heard of it before, and why i am subscribed to it, but boy do i love some deadly premonition. Have fun with Deadly Premonition 2!
Check his previous uploads, that may jog your memory.
9:39 this bit hits so much harder now that you reviewed these exact three games in your latest video
You’re one of the only youtubers these days that gets me genuinely excited whenever I see a new video. I don’t care if you upload often or not cause your videos are always worth the wait... every second
If you want to experience this game without playing it, the SuperGreatFriend playthrough is the best possible way.
You can't experience a game without playing it. That's like watching a movie with your eyes closed. Sure, you're getting part of it, but objectively you are wrong if you think watching a game is a substitute for playing it.
its great seeing them shit on the game but also loving the story
i'm drunk right now and i'm sure that the developers created this game while they were drunk
you have to be drunk to fully appreciate this game
i wasn't sure about posting this comment, than i saw the sandwic cutscene and i knew i had to do it
The SuperGreatFriend let's play of this is like, the bar of quality Let's Plays for me.
Sorry for commenting a 3 year old video, but I loved that the draft was just lorem ipsum giberish which is probably how it felt simply trying to summarize the plot. Well done.
i was having a bad day until i rewatched this. for some reason your channel is very comforting and i really appreciate that right now :,) 💖
I've heard about this game since it came out...but Jesus this makes me want to play it myself
This has become one of my all time comfort videos
What's going on with Zach and York is almost certainly DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). When people are very young, their identities aren't unified. We have several parts that are separate from one another. Usually these parts come together and solidify but if someone suffers serious childhood trauma the parts stay separate. People with DID form new parts (which are also called alters) to help them deal with different aspects of life and function normally. Everything you described is pretty much spot on.
Literally never seen Twin Peaks but this video was hilarious, as usual. Excellent work. Your delivery and timing is great.
Hey maybe this comment is early enough that you'll get a chance to read it. I genuinely love your stuff man. It's always a treat when you upload. Ily
I remembered seeing a game review for Deadly Premonition YEARS ago.
Australia had a channel on ABC called Good Game, which was hosted by 2-3 game journalists and I remember how they talked about how weird this game was along with the correlation to Twin Peaks. This game is smashing 10/10
So glad you're back Charlie, from one Charlie to another, keep up the great work love your vids
Always a good day when there is a purposeless rabbithole video
Akira Kurosawa once successfully sued Sergio Leone over the fact that "A Fistful of Dollars" is a retelling of Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" - just throwing that out there for contrast. lol
That’s bad for art
Kept hearing that, so I bought both of them, and watched them back to back. Aside from some similarities (both characters tell someone to make coffins, right before the killing, both characters get a brutal beating from the villains) they seemed different enough. If Deadly Premonition somehow isn’t a ripoff, then surely Fistful isn’t.
I just found your channel and I gotta say, I really liked this vid! I’m definitely subscribing and I’m excited to see how you grow as a content creator in the future👍
love how you keep introducing me to video games that I have no fuckin idea about but you keep having so much fun explaining and presenting all your shit you just kinda bring along the viewers for a ride they can't help but love
I know im a year late but that pug animation made me laugh in a way i havent in so long and i really needed that lately, thanks.
The game is terrible and that's why I love it.
Its not tho
Nah, it's story is pretty good tbh
The plot was amazing for a survival-horror game
The sequel is just terrible in general
@@shawklan27 The sequel was a major flop
I have this exercise I have been doing where I have to write down things that I'm grateful for and I completely forgot to write this channel down. I can watch you videos for hours. I love how you mix humour with genuine game design ideas. You are part of the reason I got into my games design degree. So thanks man:)
How have people not heard of you? Actually so underrated.
9:45 Charlie doing foreshadowing in his UA-cam videos. I'll make sure to keep an eye on Yakuza as you brought it up in your Quiet Man Review
I missed you, PR. How's the family? Good? Good. Stay indoors, and stay healthy.
No joke, that pug section had me choking with laughter. I choked on my popcorn.
For anyone who watched the best friends playthrough, we finally know where the hell Quint was, all those hours Pat spent angrily smoking outside his trailer.
it was like every damn episode i tuned into they were on the hunt for quint. i almost forgot what the game was even about they were looking for him so much. QUINT.
The pug part killed me. I just...I can't even. Oh my god.
This is one of those games i HAVE to play, just to find out about how bad it really is. Let's plays and videos about it arent the same. Good video regardless
Defo try it, I've spent like 40 hours in this insufferable mess and I would do it again.
This is a really entertaining video, shades of twin perfect channel. Haven't played this game but still loved this video. Def subscribing!
I can't believe this story you're telling me, it's macabre.
Thank you for this hilarious review. Subbed.
Back on the 360, I rented this here game, and couldn't last more than 5 minutes. The jank! Oh the jank!
The jank
The jank
The jank
THE JANK!
The whole thing with Zach... I had a feeling Agent York WAS Zach as I was watching your vid. Heehee... XD
I loved it. I loved the music, the story, the atmosphere and even the cheesey jokes. I played the directors cut.
The pug section had me rolling. Oh my god that was fucking hilarious
The man the myth the legend is back
Thanks Rutherford Hayes!
Beginning of the video: I hate it, I hate it, I hate it, its dogshit and the worst thing I've ever played.
Middle of the video: It's so bad it's good.
End of the video: This shit blew my mind!
That was hilarious. I needed that. Thanks.
I swear, the cuts you leave in where your laughing at your own joke or laughing at something stupid going on makes it even funnier lol
Damn that Zack reveal is straight up genius.
I platinumed this game. I still have a packet of papers for how to collect all the cards. Loved this game.
"AYO mom and dad???!!! he uploaded"
Had to wait 2 years to watch this video as I wanted to complete the game first. But it was worth it. Thank you.
This is the closest we’ll get to an Xavier: Renegade Angel game
@@casanovafunkenstein5090 Ah yes, Grecotch. The mightiest of weapons.
@@aelius3805 yeah it pretty much makes the combat trivial, so long as you never complete the side quest and give it back
It's explained in the second game that he basically didn't, he did training's on physical and intelligence test. But he didn't do the rest due to his father legacy, he was considered a legend and the head of the FBI took him on the spot, it is why he can get away with so much shit, since he's the favorite
Country ham will satisfy a moderate amount of your hunger.
This video got me to watch twin peaks, and then play Deadly Premonition. Now I fully agree with you: what the fuck!?!
9:39
Gotta love it when Charlie foreshadows future vidoes.
This game is an absolute mess and I love it for it, everything about this game is both a blessing and a curse.
Okay that whole "Zach" thing caught me more off guard, probably than most people, because that's literally my name. What makes it even more cool was that twist at the end. *This game cannot be more perfect for me.*
DP is my favorite video game of all time.
When I saw your review at the beginning I was like oh... it's going to be too long... You kept me entertained. Good job (seriously) And by the way I've never played the game and I think I wont either
He really didn't do this game justice with this review
You should.
I can't tell you how many times Life is Beautiful pulled me back from the brink of depression.
12:38
We’ve all had the same Chev reaction. Transcends movies, shows, games, etc.
Welp, today has been weird enough ( nostalgia for pepsiman and “bury the light” monobloc documentaries levels of weird) that being reminded of this baffling game left me laughing through the entire video, great job.
You are hands down one of the most ENTERTAINING gaming channels that I’ve ever watched, and I’m broke rn but best BELIEVE when I’m not broke, you’ll be getting a Patreon subscription from me, because you can do NO WRONG
What a nice way to start Friday
Lol it's a nice way to end Friday for me
I love Deadly Premonition, I actually went out to buy a Switch a few weeks before the sequel came out just so I could play it day 1.
Charlie Man! Good to see you! I always look forward to every video you put out!
This game is the kind of captivating insanity that we need more of. I lost it hard at the bit with the pug blowing into the trumpet, thank you very much for that haha.
When the video started and he goes "This game is terrible" I grew the biggest grin. Heck yeah it is man, heck yeah it is. And it's great 😂
It is like SO BAD, but SO GOOD, I hate to love this game to death.
Loved this video man, probably one of your best ones yet. Keep the good shit coming dude
I’m starting to love this channel😁
Yes! Another video, finally. This will be a treat
