Is it an Islam thing? Cause I've always been a lil suspect at trying out a ground up main fork off of islam... like it's annoying getting things like Wahhabism contextualized under the main fork as a component as a whole as by design your not supposed to be differentiating anyhow, bad reputation gets its spread as fast as the cold hard cash that spread the corruption whole sale from what was a minor and insignificant dead end till the Saudi oil boom... But at the same time, when you are trying to keep it from having any dead weight as spirituality instead of an organized religion, forks just kinda add all the more opportunity for that to happen, ie how the Shia branch ended up with a technical pope, in a faith that by it's core tenant has no organizational structure... So I wish em all well, God knows the nation is one of the worst in adding structure and religion to the faith and could benefit from a mix up of re-examining priorities (not in a Shodan way of course)... I guess I just liked the Malcolm X approach better where you just drop the pretense altogether... but people gonna be people... everyone's gotta feel like they belong to something... and that where your real problems start... Beit human or corporate or object, ideology is the killer of the human soul... so I hope these goth kids don't end up like those hair metal kids back in the 80's... next thing you know you get Motley Crue and even worse... alternative radio stations.
It's almost adorable, how they regularly run into walls and guzzle stuff they find under the sink looking for "the good stuff" that they heard about on their FaceBooks. On the other hand, they don't even know how to use a safety pin or tie their own Daemonica boots, so it's pretty superficial at best... Still, points for at least trying to emulate one of the better counter-culture movements in history.
My first experience of this game was in 2013, when a friend of mine got snowed in at my place for a week and happened to have brought DP to show me with him in the driver's seat and me observing as we went through the whole game. This friend was just as obsessed with old B movies as York and my name is Zach. It was perfect.
Another video to restore my crumbling mind. Let the goth gamer energies flow through me. And Mandalore's name got read right before mine? What a time to be alive.
I loved the useless food/sleep stuff, windshield wipers, car conversations, and especially being a host for a swarm of flies. You can say the end was bleak but those flies thrived for the whole game.
Yeees, after bringing it up multiple times, it's finally here! This is definitely because of me, neither by popular demand or because it was simply on his list!
Incredible video. I absolutely love the new music. I don't mean to be like, weird or anything, but there's literally no one else on UA-cam with this kind of talent. No offense intended to the other UA-cam dudes™ out there. Grim's just built different, y'know.
Good ole Grimsy does kinda do it all in these videos. I love the Gmans, Civvie, Mandalore, Noah Caldwell Gervais, etc of the world but they wish they could cram as many unique jokes and production values into their videos. Big inspiration for the channel I mean to start myself soon
Watching Joseph Anderson slowly but steadily burning braincells with this game while realising that there is no way of reviewing it in a concise matter in his style is one of my favorite streaming experiences
Oh my god, my favorite Supernatural UA-camr also makes videos about vidya games? What's next, am gonna find out that Grimdaddy also makes videos for suggesting cool music, or even their own songs? For real, I need a new Doxaphobia for my earholes.
Years ago I went blindly into this game without knowing how hard it would blow my f****** mind. I loved every tacky second of it. Too bad about the ridiculous amount of game killing bugs on the PC. Were it not for that, I would jump into a third playthrough without even thinking. So much crazy of the good kind.
Vinny and Jeff playing this over on Giant Bomb for an Endurance Run did a lot to popularize the game. Them inviting SWERY on was pretty nice, too. Their playthroughs of this and Persona 4 are kind of the granddaddy of the Let's Play genre in a way, come to think of it. That P4 one has never really been topped.
Ah yes, the PC Port which I couldn't get running well no matter what, I actually ended up getting the Switch version since it has less issues. (after it got patches.) As for melee weapons, they actually do drastically more damage than any gun that isn't the magnum.
Funfact: Due to it being so unnoticed it basically escaped lawsuit because the similarities are so striking that even in the EU it'd count as plagarism- or patern-theft.
I have heard way back that this is kinda the case with the OTHER Twin Peaks inspired game made out there, Mizzurna Falls. It copies a lot of the story beats of Twin Peaks to the point where you kinda have to ask "what's the point? To embelish yourself on an already made story?" I dunno though I love seeing how Japan filters western media through their heads, its just strange that they don't "do something" with the preestablished stuff.
This is perhaps the channels best video-essay yet, and that's saying something, since most of the reviews are so friggin' awesome! :D Also, I can imagine the pain and suffering while writing and revising the script and splicing the video together, and I really hope you know the gang really appreciates the hard work. Stay awesome, dude!
Its kinda impressive how much footage of this game video essayists/reviews like this can get. Like every single lets player i remember playing this game when i was younger started out super hyped liked "yeah! Ive heard good things, its a weird one, lets get into it!" And then it only gets like maaaybe 2 episodes in before the person has to just quit because they cant reliably get footage
Big thanks for going into the story and themes of this game in such detail! I could never stomach the unstable code and tedious gameplay, so experiencing it vicariously is such a treat!
You’re the only UA-cam’s I start to get worried about after a few weeks lol. Thanks for making my day. I love this game and am glad you finally watched season three!
"Zach, I think I just met Mumford or one of his sons, maybe a Lumineer." LOL wow I have not laughed that hard in a while, so glad I found your channel!
My oh my. I was really looking into this to hear how it relates to Twin Peaks, which has been mentioned everywhere. But damn. I wasn't expecting to get SO detailed information. Thanks 👍👍
I've tried to watch Twin peaks twice but always got burned out somewhere near the end of season 1. I have no reason for this, I just seem to really struggle to stick with it. And yet some many "Twin peaks" inspired stories are some of my favourite things. This review reminds me to give it another chance and see if the stars align correctly for me this time. I don't even dislike the show. I just get to a certain amount of episodes and my brain goes "ok enough of that for now" and then I don't get back to it until like 5 years later.
God I'm so happy i found this video. I've been binging your vids for like three weeks. Anyway how arr people complaining about the cutscenes? If i recommend Deadly Premonition it usually comea with a "you might wanna just watch all the cutscenes on youtube instead of playing the game" lol
I can play it, now? Thank you! Missing this over Mass Effect, this game is now priority (and costs less too). I played it for a couple of hours at my friends place and although, "Twin Peaks" was far away from the revival it's seen as of late I immediatey flashed back to being 15 years old. "This game is so 'Twin Peaks'!". Immediately hooked me, while everyone else was so, "whatever" at best, regarding this title. I so appreciate this vid. THANK YOU. I'm not some "super-gamer", but this title was one I always felt that I missed out on. You've done a good deed, sir. May all of your daily Horroscope's bring ambiguous news of good fortune, while vaguely applicable to the circumstances of your personal life.
Deadly Premonition is easily my favourite game of the generation - the character of York, and the way the main story is told goes a long way to cover up for it's gameplay faults. That being said... The 360 version was incredibly more stable than any other version & more focused - even if some gameplay feels a little more jank. There's sooo many issues with the Director's Cut that it really does a disservice to the game, even if it wasn't perfect. The side stories & events really highlight the purpose of the open world & night/day system though - they really add more dimension to the overall game though.
The PC version wasn't great. I remember having trouble fighting Kaysen because I couldn't aim vertically above a certain height. It was like there was an invisible boundary on the screen that couldn't be crossed. Also, Nvidia Shadowplay would only output a slice of the screen. Not the most busted old console port I've seen, though.
I remember really loving Super Best Friends playtrough of this game, then it came out on PC, I bought it aaaand.. It was crashing so often, I just gave up after an hour. :(
One allusion I’ve never heard that I feel is deserved is it sometimes feels like a kojima game. Crazy amount of cutscenes, eccentric characters, story is all over the place, heavily inspired by other media, has that “flavor” that can’t really be found anywhere else. I rest my case.
The internet has been waiting for the day someone will roll along and give Twin Peaks (I mean Deadly P....I legit typed Twin Peaks and I meant Deadly P.....) the lengthy video it has deserved. So glad it was Grim Beard.
I was already hooked by this game from the opening cutscene. It's weirdness and (OBVIOUS) Twin Peaks influence really tickled my fancy... But when York started talking to Zach about the movie "The Deadly Spawn" during yet another boring driving sequence, I knew I was in love.
Having just stumbled across your channel recently, I was excited to see this game being looked at through your perspective. I've just gotten to the part about the Destructoid review and finding out the person who wrote that review was Jim Sterling. Reading their review is what pushed me to purchase this game for the 360 and it is an experience that hasn't left me. For all the actual issues the game has (like how off shooting/targetting and moving/driving felt), it still one of my favorite games I've ever played and the Life is Beautiful track is an eternal earworm for me.
Jokes aside. You have really outdone yourself with this video, as well as really come to form. I found this to be my favorite video you made. I stopped doing my chores to sit down and watch this, thank you I really enjoyed this.
Whoa whoa whoa, excuse me, I do believe Swery has stated for the record that he had never even *heard* of Twin Peaks until after he made this game. So, you know, those instances that seem to be exact references to Twin Peaks? Those are coincidences. All 50+ of them.
I originally started out looking for a new horror game back in 2010-2011 since I had played them all up to that point. I stumbled upon Deadly Premonition absolutely never hearing of it, there was only one copy available within a 25 mile radius around me and I rushed to grab it for some reason. I popped it in my Xbox 360 and I just played it straight through, I have no clue how to describe how addictive the game was but I absolutely could not put it down until I finished it. It was the most delightful experience I've EVER had with a game, and to this day it is my favorite (and yes, I am a little disappointed by the sequel, but am still happy we even got one). I loved the game so much it prompted me to watch the phenomenal Twin Peaks which has become my favorite piece of media ever. Needless to say, try it. It truly is one of those things you either love or hate, but honestly, I have introduced many people to this game, friends, coworkers, and surprisingly they shared the same feelings I did and also went on to watch Twin Peaks. Very thankful for this game.
I'm so happy you covering this game I use to play this game when I was younger and idk y but till this day I somehow still feel connected to this game like I will never forget this game
I don't know about anyone else, but someone genuinely inquiring "...Do you know what a BDSM cult is?" to a pie-eyed little girl clutching a teddy bear, is an ultimate height in humor I didn't know existed before this video. My only sorrow is that nonexistent little girl will never actually be introduced to that theoretical Combichrist collection... but then again she will also never learn about the existence of Deadly Premonition's sequel, which is cause for some level of envy.
That was fun to watch! I have a lot of respect for your dedication and effort to give this a balanced review. Also very cool that you gave a shoutout to that interview with Curtis - your channel popped into mind when Ross announced it a while back.
You also have to remember that Alan Wake takes place in what I refer to as the Remedyverse, as it, the Max Payne series, and CONTROL all share a global narrative and regularly reference one another. (And most incorporate some truly wonderful music by Poets of the Fall in some way, who appear diegetically as the band Old Gods of Asgard.)
Thanks for the review bro, heard amazing things about this game but the game-breaking bug on PC kept me away when I ended up looking into getting a copy. Keep up the killer content, I'm a really big fan! Cheers.
It's a fantastic game and really hard to find in North America now. I like how Swery puts his own spin on familiar media, Like Spy Fiction : Metal Gear Solid and Deadly Premonition : Twin Peaks
to play or not to play, that has long been the question I'll watch this and get some spoilers and then probably forget and maybe get to play it some day
With how you broke down this and Max Payne, I'd honestly love to see you cover Alan Wake. I feel like you'd do such a great job with it, and with the sequel and remaster/remake coming I don't see a better time then now to cover it.
Zach, did you hear about the new "goth gamer" movement? I heard it's all the rage with the kids. They even call themselves a "goth gamer nation".
Is it an Islam thing? One of your best works to date and a total distillation of your style. What a pleasure it is to rewatch this one
The only thing I know about the sequel is that it ran at silky smooth 14-20 FPS. Did they fix that eventually?
How inconvenient that I’ve discovered this video at bedtime
Concerning those flashing/visual glitches, did you happen to hear the distant laughter of Rich Evans accompanying them?
This is my favorite video on the internet currently and yes i've watched this twenty times today on repeat and am currently using it to fall asleep
Characters that emerge from the ground and bend over backwards?
Literally me.
Sometimes I hope I'm shadow banned and not just uncool. But deep down I know the truth
Now I want a Lynchian FMV game.
I was about to go to sleep and I see this in my feed.....you beautiful monster!
Well, looks like I'm rewatching Twin Peaks once again
Oh my God he finally did it. THE MADMAN!!!!!!
I love that they tried to make something different for better or worse always be one my fav games of all time
Thanks for the review bro, heard amazing things about this game but the game-breaking bug on PC kept me away when I ended up looking into getting a copy. Keep up the killer content, I'm a really big fan! Cheers.
31:43 to be fair, that's Forrest Kaysen we're talking about here
First I made pizza. Sat down on my sofa. gave a thump up. And enjoyed the heck out of this episode.
Spy fiction brings me so many memories. It was my first game on the PS2 and I really loved it. I've never met anyone who knew this game xD.
It's a fantastic game and really hard to find in North America now. I like how Swery puts his own spin on familiar media, Like Spy Fiction : Metal Gear Solid and Deadly Premonition : Twin Peaks
An hour and twenty two minutes and not one 15 minute silent rotating shot of The Pickles
Boy oh boy, what I would give for a Darkened Streams series for Twin Peaks. Luv u Grim
Give this man some more likes, just subscribed and I love the content. Keep it coming. Better then most of these really big channels on youtube.
Partake in engagement options sounds like religious/culty shenanigans which somehow made me want to do it more
to play or not to play, that has long been the question
I'll watch this and get some spoilers and then probably forget and maybe get to play it some day
oh hey, I'm zach
well, maybe I should play it then...
nah
I'm happy to see you again, I thought you were strike down for the supernatural videos!
Another wonderful chance to hear Grim talk about twin peaks for 80 mins ❤️
Deadly Premonition is pretty much Twin Peaks the Game, so this must have been a dream come true for Grimbeard.
With how you broke down this and Max Payne, I'd honestly love to see you cover Alan Wake.
I feel like you'd do such a great job with it, and with the sequel and remaster/remake coming I don't see a better time then now to cover it.
