I used to work for “Luxury” brands...Channel, Dior, Ect... I had every luxury brand at my disposal to try/use...Sisley Paris, La Mer, La Prairie, ect...I have to say, 90% of them are NOT worth it.
Over the last 40 years, I've had several dermatologist tell me that the Olay and CereVe products were the best drug store products. I'm 65 and get a lot of compliments on my skin and Olay has been my go to for all these years. I remember when it was called Oil of Olay!😁
Thank you for that information , I have used high end skin care but I have tried olay products and I really liked it and I would never use anything else
The only thing to be aware of with Olay is that many of the products have fragrance. They do have fragrance free versions of some of them. And you can't trust the phrase "fragrance free" on the label. I found at least 1 Olay product that said that, and the ingredients included fragrance!
@@janetmyhre9536I used to love Olay. Then I found the ordinary and good molecules. The ordinary is good for things like peeling Solutions and hyaluronic acid. But good molecules has some fabulous products. They're yerba mate under eye treatment is out of this world and I think they're most expensive products are 12 or $15. They all come in glass bottles. You can get hyaluronic acid and stuff like that from them too it's just that it's cheaper if you get it through the ordinary. Can cocaine has some really great products. Also the snail mucin by cosrx is incredible especially if you are older. I'm 49 and it has made my skin so incredibly hydrated and soft it's incredible! But there is a version that is made with yams period that is vegan and cruelty free . So if vegan products are important to you you can get a vegan version of the snail mucin. Cassandra bankson if you watch her Channel she's a licensed esthetician who also studies like biochemistry and all that stuff she has fabulous recommendations. And she's all about saving a buck
Hi Jen this is a killer video idea and I love that you're giving us "luxury on a budget" content. I'm sad to see some comments on this video that are telling you that your choices are still too expensive. I wonder if any of these people have tried buying skincare at the drugstore lately? Everything is more expensive these days and other than The Ordinary most skincare like Olay, Cerave, Cetaphil, etc are above $20 for most products. Plus I mentioned this in another comment but The Ordinary serums only have 1 main ingredient, so they're not a savings compared to that Olay serum you talked about which has the lactic acid, niacinamide, vitamin c and peptides. If you buy all those separate serums from The Ordinary it'll cost even more! You gave us some great options.
I’ve used some Neutrogena products for many years, and a few months ago I went to repurchase their eye cream with retinol and the price had jumped to $54. I was shocked at how expensive it had become. So I agree that drugstore skin care is not as inexpensive as it used to be.
Exactly, there's not much that's not expensive these days. Just some that are more expensive than others. Most everything is way overpriced in my opinion. Lol
@@ginnyburley9552 IMHO, part of this is that people are looking for less expensive drugstore products to substitute for department store and luxury brands. So the demand went up. But I'm shocked that any Neutrogena product is that expensive! But you really don't need special eye cream. You can just use your moisturizer, and put some petroleum jelly over it if you need more moisture. I've done this for years, and I'm sure my skin hasn't suffered.
I switched from higher end beauty lately to K beauty. Their skin care is top notch, they use proven, good ingredients, are usually cruelty free, and the prices can't be beat! My skin has never looked better! ☺️✨️
@kimberlymej8584 I really like Elizavecca, Heimish, CosRx, to name just a few, and I'm also loving Hada Labo products (technically J beauty, but still lol).
I used to use high end skincare....and then I started having allergic reactions to certain ingredients like fragrance. It started out just causing some itching and redness on my face and neck. When the itching began waking me up several times during the night, I stopped using everything and went to the drugstore and bought a simple cleanser for dry skin and rich moisturizer, both fragrance free with a short list of ingredients. My skin has never looked or felt better! My skin is also less dry than it used to be. Sometimes less is more. 😊
I wish I could like this comment 1,000 times! We cause a lot of our own skin problems by using fragranced products, washing with hot or cold water, using unnecessary products, and over moisturizing and/or over exfoliating.
@@laur83 I'm not a marketing person, but I think it's part of their brand identity. Also, many people do enjoy fragrance in their skin care. It's part of the experience. But it really isn't good for the skin.
@@20thcenturyrelic i don’t hate fragrance myself, i think it can add to the sensorial and self-caring nature of skincare and body care. but, if you want to minimise any risks of irritation or adverse effects it really is something to try to avoid.
@@laur83 It's really best for everyone to avoid it. Fragrance can cause long term damage to the skin (like sun damage) that may not become visible for years. That said, it's less risky in rinse off products than it is in leave on products. So a scented body wash, say, is less risky than a scented body lotion. I've had enough experiences with eczema outbreaks, and, once, a nasty rash on my lips, that I avoid scented and flavored products.
This was one of the best videos you have made, imo- I’m recently divorced .. and I use a lot of the high end products u mentioned- and now I’m on a tighter budget, so I really appreciate the cheaper alternatives you suggested!! Ty!
Living in New Zealand, I find alot of the brands, you are talking about are not available in my Country, but the way you describe the ingredients allows me to shop and look for the key ingredients. Thank you for taking your time and explaining each product, which allows me to be a more informed consumer. 😊
I’m addicted to Maelove serums. I stopped overpaying for skincare about 2 years ago and haven’t regretted it at all. My skin is actually more even toned and smoother than it was when I paid more. It’s also less sensitive, so, I don’t think paying more means better quality or performance, whether it’s makeup or skincare!
@@kimberlymej8584 I use a total of five, but not everyday or not all morning and night. The N10 (niacinamide) serum is a have to have for me. It’s calmed my sensitivity and even my husband is addicted to it now, lol. The Moonlight retinaldahyde serum at night. Gentle but effective. Hydrator gel boosts my regular moisturizer, and the Fade Away really has lightened some age spots and freckling. My young daughter has started using the Smooth Away once a day for mild acne and it’s made a huge difference in her skin with no irritation. There’s no sting to it. A lot of people love the vitamin C Glowmaker, but I found the N10 worked best for my skin. Their literature said it can be a replacement for vitamin c, especially for sensitive skin. Hope that helps!
Too many people have a cost bias, myself included sometimes. I do sort of want to try glow recipe as the packaging looks nice and I like pretty things, but still. Expensive lol 😂 I'm using Inkeylist products right now, but the packaging reminds me of medicinal products and I don't like that
Jen you are an absolute treasure my dear ❤ Thank you for being a voice of reason for the budget conscious who want to look their best without breaking the bank. Bless you 🎉
I have mentioned this many times on this channel, but I love vanicream product's. Low cost and good for sensitive skin. I never got on the high end skincare bandwagon. I'm just too frugal, and a lot of high end skin care has a lot of botanicals and fragrance which irritates my skin
@@pajamamama5965that's so good to hear. I've been wanting to try that, but just haven't gotten around to it. I keep my skincare pretty simple. I'll definitely have to fit this into my routine
@@JenPhelpsI personally love their ointment. Less greasy than competitors and really soothes ultra dry skin on body and face. I have a tub or tube of it everywhere!
I love Naturium. They are made in USA. Elf is made in China. Naturium is still made in USA, but if that changes I will stop, I avoid made in China products. Great video!
I’ve been really into skincare since I hit my 30s and since I haven’t been able to afford high end skincare I was forced to research and figure out good products on a budget. Dr Dray, Angie Hot and Flashy and a few others have taught me so much about skincare methods and ingredients. My skin is better at 38 than it was at 30.
As a French, Avene and La Roche Posay are one of my go-to when it comes to skincare. I used to have very sensitive skin and bad eczema flare ups and I have seen the biggest improvements when I switched to gentle formulations and fragrance free products. I'm glad those brands worked out for you Jen 😊 PS : In case you decide to visit France, you'll find those products at a cheaper price. Eucerin is a German brand so not 100% sure about !
Fragrance in skin care and makeup causes a lot of skin problems. People have no idea how problematic it is. And most, but fortunately not all, products have it!
I have been using La Roche Posay face wash, toner, and moisturizer, for over 5 years and it has never disappointed me. I am finishing my FAB cleansing oil and then going to try the La Roche Posay one. Thanks for sharing your drugstore skincare, it really is amazing how good drugstore products have become over the years.
Hi Jen, I truly loved this video as I’m nearing 60, with very sensitive skin, and very dry. I can’t afford the high-end versions so I truly love these alternatives. You are so good at breaking everything down and researching everything 😊 I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see you do a full morning and evening routine with these drug store options.
I 'm 62 and also have very dry, sensitive skin. Try Vanicream cleanser and cream, and the Cerave Hydrating Toner. And if you need some extra moisture, petroleum jelly or Aquaphor are great for an occlusive barrier. The Neutrogena Norwegian Formula hand cream is also good and comes in a fragrance free version. And make sure you use sunscreen every day!
I love seeing how low the levels are in your moisturizers, I can see how much you use the products. Sometimes UA-camrs say "I've been using x product forever" but it looks full. I mean come on, we have eyes!
I ❤ Tatcha Dewy Skin Cream. I only wear it during the winter because it's so heavy. To me, it's worth the splurge. It doesn't aggravate my very sensitive skin.
Eucrein moisturize is a favorite of mine! So glad you found it. I usually use it at night but after hearing you say how well it works with foundation, I’m going to switch to morning. Thanks for sharing what you find that works at affordable prices. You are a sweetheart!
The purito dermide cica sleeping pack is great! Unscented, plays well under makeup, and it is thick and luxurious! I have super dry skin, so in the winter I end up using it morning and night, I LOVE IT.
That is a good one, but I like Klairs better. I have both. Try the Dear Klairs Midnight blue calming cream. It is almost exactly the feeling of the Tatcha, and the color is also purple. :) Another one that is awesome and similar to the Purito you mentioned is Dear Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Cream. They are both Korean beauty products just like Purito.
I use the Purito dermide moisturiser and it sinks in beautifully and has ceramides and other skin friendly ingredients. Great value for 100mls and it is a pump dispenser.
I just discovered the Naturium Retinaldehyde too and am loving it for my sensitive skin. I ditched Good Genes a couple of years ago and switched to The Ordinary’s Lactic Acid Serum 5%. It also comes in 10% but that was too strong for me. I absolutely love your content…you’re my fav! ❤
Thanks Jen for sharing this video 😊 Most of the high end skin care & cosmetics are manufactured by the same company that are in the drugstore. The only difference is the packaging and the cost. I've found many gems at the drugstore - I've been using the Neutrogena Ultra gentle fragrance free hydrating cleanser for over 5 years 🥰 I also use the Hydro Boost cleansing gel, and the Vanicream lotion and suncreen. Take care everyone 🌹
SHARON SHNEYER, In my rant above, I completely forgot about Neutrogena. I am partial to their chemical free sunscreen, but since I where a mask most of the time, I rarely need a sunscreen, but have used them in the past; I am fair skinned.
Vanicream also makes a great cleanser! It works well on my dry skin and even removes makeup. I promise, I don't work for them or get paid to recommend their products!
No Jen, it's been known since ever that the price doesn't matter when it comes to skincare because the ingredients expensive/ cheap are practically the same. Also, the cream doesn't go deep enough into the layers where the ageing really occirs - if it did it'd be considered a medicine and would need to go through the same testing as medicines do. And finally, many skincare products are very old. Cold cream has at least 2000 year history. It was known as 'Gaken's cream' and the ingredients are practically the same as those today. Expensive skincare is nothing but marketing. If it was so good, acctresses wouldn't have facelifts in their 39s.
I LOVE this video! Time to do some shopping a la Jen! I have been using the La Roche Posay Lipikar! Both this gel oil cleanser and the sensitive Hyaluronic Acid cleanser. That Laneige and the Baby Cheeks are both tiny compared to I’m From Rice Toner. I will definitely try the Olay Super serum… it is worth a try for me, even though my skin is very adverse to acids in general. It hates Vit C with a passion. I’d never heard of Naturium but I will be looking into them big time. The only “Retinol” I can use is Mad Hippie, Vit A. My skin can begin to sometimes like La Roche Posay Adapalene but after a while, my skin began to hate it. My skin began turning bright brown orange daily and got inflamed which meant NOPE. Now, I stick with my Mad Hippie every other day. I have Ehlers-Danlos and my skin is incredibly thin and fragile. I will be looking into Cocokind, Naturium, Olay! I have oily combo skin and I have used lancome tonique comfort and will not be usin it any more as I ca solidly say that Numbuzin No 3 Super Glowing Essence is way superior and cheaper. I felt the immediate similarities as soon as I tried the Lancome. Yes, I had the Numbuzin 1st. I go thru bottles of the Numbuzin and that says a lot, because they are HUGE! Korean skincare comes in real sized packages, so for my skin to use something up completely without rebuking it, say WOW WOW!
I love how you showed the high-end product and described why you liked it before going on to show the drugstore brand and why it was a good replacement. What a great idea for a video. And thank you for saving our money.🎉❤
Thanks for sharing your new drugstore favs. I don't use any hi-end skincare by choice. I think it's just a waste when lower priced products work very well. I'm so thankful that you're here for us !
Love skincare, Jen!! The product comparisons + ingredients. 10/10! I appreciate your dedication and actually using the products to give us honest feedback from your experience. ❤
Loved this vid! As someone with oily acne prone skin, I would highly recommend the la roche posay salicylic acid cleanser. It is pretty affordable imo and gets rid of some of the redness from any active breakouts. I also use the byoma moisturizing gel cream, it doesn’t feel heavy or greasy and it still gives my skin hydration. I use the hyaluronic acid and niacinamide serums from good molecules their brand has lots of affordable skincare, highly recommend checking them out!
Thanks Jen. I use the Paula's Choice Aha/Bha products and it takes forever to use up one of those bottles. Although not cheap, I have had bad reactions to other chemical exfoliators so I stick with PC. Even the PC Calm version, which is 1% versus the 2% of the regular bottle, I can use every day if I want to and keeps my pores clear and reduces texture amazingly. Personally, I think this is one of the absolute MUST products.
This is the order I use the products in (been getting lots of questions about this!). 1. Cleanser 2. Versed Toner 3. DAYTIME: Cocokind Barrier Serum then Eucerin Cream 4. NIGHTIME: Olay Super Serum or Naturium Retinol on alternate days. Then Cocokind Resurrection Cream or Tatcha Cream. 5. Marula Oil on top of moisturizer if my skin feels extra dry. 6. BHA serum in place of Olay Super Serum/Retinol once a week.
FANTASTIC VIDEO Jen. I did not think I would enjoy a skincare video that much but this was incredibly informative as well as enjoyable. There is just something so special about hearing this kind of info from a friend and someone who is so good at teaching, sharing and trusted. I hope my posts aren't so late that you miss seeing them.
Love this video!! I’ve always been a fan of affordable or drugstore skin care. One of my favorites is the Peach Slices acne toner, which has AHA and BHA - personally it works better for me than the Paula’s choice one and it is only about $11!
Jen, I agree with you 100% on the Tatcha The Dewy Skin Cream. Costco carried it (can't remember price) & I bought a jar. It made my skin look & feel fabulous! That's a lot to ask for on a 62 year old's Sahara Desert dry skin. LOVE your videos!
Hi Jen, just tried the new Cerave oil cleanser. It works very well and does not leave your skin greasy at all. Also leaves your skin very soft. No double cleansing.
I'm loving this dupe video! Thank you so much for the time you put into these. I have learned so much from you and never knew til your last skincare video to do the multiple layers of patting the toners. Brilliant!! I use that every day!
Thank you Jen for helping us to save some money in the long run. I am appreciate all your time dedicated and research all the products. I bought a lot of drugstore skincare and I think it’s good to invest and they don’t have perfume to irritate my skin. ❤
So happy the Cocokind Ceramide Barrier Serum is one you chose to try because I have been using it myself for a couple of months. With so many of everything to choose from, having an endorsement from a trusted source is welcome. Of course, the biggest change for me was switching from Curology to Agency. They really bumped up my tretinoin and THAT has made the biggest difference. They also do two formulated treatments for me, but it’s the one with tretinoin that has been transformational. They never bumped me up with Curology unless I suggested it, and it didn’t occur to me that they had not for many, many-too many-months.
Thanks Jen, this was a terrific video and I made a list of products to try. I don’t use luxury brand products often but the products you talked about were interesting and worth trying. I’m more interested in makeup than skincare but I agree with you about the need to take care of our skin. I trust you and feel very confident to use the products you have researched.
Great job Jen,really good to see these videos and even an informed beauty expert is looking for alternatives in the wickedly priced skincare, thanks for that!
Jen, the Cerave skin renewing night cream is fantastic! I only buy the tatcha mini set lol . For me its not worth nuying the larger jar bevause it takes me awhile go get through (I tend to cycle between pure shea butter, the tatcha and coconut oil) and the cerave, I definitely continue to come back to time and time again.
Yes! That CeraVe night cream saved my skin when I started out on Tret. Nowadays I often put it on over my moisturizer at night just to lock everything in 👍
+1 for the cerave night renewing cream, I've tried SO many night moisturizers, high end and drugstore, and this is in my top 3. instant smoothing effect
Do you have dry skin? I’m curious because I did the CeRave for 3 containers… can’t remember how long that took but for me it didn’t do anything. I switched about 2 months ago to the No 7 pink label restore & renew and holy buckets I saw so much improvement! So if you love CeRave keep on it but if you want to try out something different No. 7 is my go to (I’m 52, combo skin, redness and sensitive) ❤
@@christinalaska hello, I don't have oily skin, it's normal with the oiliest eyelids on the planet lol My skin doesn't require a whole lot thankfully in the way of moisturizer. I'll add no.7 to the list!
Thanks so much for this video, Jen! I was all set to spend $50 on Avene, but I'm definitely going to try the Naturium retinaldehyde instead. I have dry skin, but have a problem with many moisturizers just sitting on top of my skin, rather than being absorbed. I'm going to try some of your other suggestions to see if something lighter would work better.
Hi Jen I’m a skincare nerd and have super dry, menopausal, rosacea and eczema prone skin. Most of my skincare is from the Korean brands with a prescription active and a few key actives from Western brands too. For hydration you can’t beat the Korean toners, essences and serums IMO. However due to their much more humid environment (I live in Scotland 😂) their moisturisers just aren’t rich enough for me. I need a BUTTERY moisturiser to keep my skin comfortable in the colder months. I really like the PC ultra rich cream and if I want a splurge item the Kate Somerville Delikate moisturiser is really great. However a big difference to how my makeup looks is what I’m using to prime. I use my multiple layers of skincare and then my spf as normal, leave to settle for about 20 minutes and then just before makeup apply either the Bobbi Brown vitamin enriched face base or more recently the Revolution superbase to my whole face. Then I apply my primers on top and then the foundation etc. That extra layer of the superbase makes my skin so much more bouncy and might be worth a try. It has enough dimethicone to help as a primer, but the shea butter etc provides an extra dose of moisture that really helps my foundation look dewy on the skin. It works over my spf with no issues and helps keep my skin comfortable for much longer in the day (I do the same with concealer and add another layer of eye cream just before applying my concealer- also makes a huge difference). I’m super dry living in a colder climate with wind and central heat in the mix, so it might help you too. Best wishes x
Hi just wanted to recommend the ILLIYOON Ceremide ATO Concentrate Cream, my husband has extremely dry skin and here in Ballarat, Melbourne the weather can really impact on his rosacea and this cream for him is a game changer. It’s soo buttery and nourishing without feeling greasy. It’s supposed to be a night cream but I think it’s a brilliant heavy duty day cream for extreme weather. It’s Korean so the price is very affordable.
@@carolinaconstable1294 thanks I’ve tried that one and it’s not enough for my skin in cold weather. I’m severely dry and live in Scotland- menopausal, rosacea and eczema prone (dry dry dry dry). I’m really glad it works well for him though and thanks for the attempt to help x
That Laroche Posey cleansing oil is great stuff. I have oily skin, and it works for me. You're right about the bottle lasting forever. I also like Bubble Daydream for vitamin C. I agree about the Tacha...there's just no dupe. Someday I'll get back to using it 😂.
i don’t use high end skincare because it’s out of my price range and with skincare you need to continually repurchase. whereas with high end makeup which i have, i don’t need to repurchase nearly as often, if ever. there have been excellent innovations in drugstore and prescription skincare. which is what i use. getting a good quality sunscreen, serums that work and some high quality actives is where it’s at. i love the olay regenerist retinol moisturiser and i’ve been using differin gel as well. which is prescription-only and expensive where i live. no need for anything fancier, i don’t think.
I am super excited to try some of these! Like you, my skincare purchases tend to be more "spendy" than my makeup purchases. Your recommendations have always been such a hit for me, so I'm curious to try these, especially that cleansing oil!
PS: Can I ask how you use the Retinaldehyde product? Does it go on before moisturizer? In place of it? I'm new to retinol-type products but want to try something for my melasma/hyperpigmentation and have been told that retinol would help. But I'm clueless, haha!
I got that eucerin creme for $6 with a coupon recently. I had never heard about it, I just bought it on a whim. Now I'm excited to try it when I finish what I'm currently using.
I love Naturium products…I’ve used their Marula oil and always repurchase the SPF 50 Dew glow for my dry skin…I recently started using their new Multi-Peptide Serum which has been so plumping and hydrating!!!
Thank you for this video Jen! I have slowly been trying to transition my skincare over to mostly drugstore as well. That city moisturizer sounds intriguing though!
I’m a newbie into this world of UA-cam makeup tutorials, but I’ve found a few of you ladies that are my age, I’m 47, that have taught me SO much. I think it’d be fascinating if you guys would come together and do a half-day seminar, or a series of zoom sessions, or UA-cam tutorials, where you guys took ALL of your strengths and put them together for MY/OUR benefit. Risa, you have the makeup artist skills and knowledge that is beyond compare, and you bring in that West Coast vibe. She’s, also, more of a Midwest woman. Though I don’t know exactly where she’s from, EVERYTHING in me says she’s from Utah. She just looks like Utah! And, then, there’s Ali Andrea… the taste of Europe. She brings the flair of print and the catwalk to the table, as well as the Parisian vibe. To finish things off… Laniemariebeauty could give us easy, but new and stylish options for our hair in the coming months as we approach the holidays and bad weather in a year that the Farmer’s Almanac says is going to be a pretty brutal one for us all. So appreciate your affordable skincare video with the cooler/colder weather coming. You can't go wrong with La Roche-Posay. Thier Cicpalast Balm is amazing for dry skin especially when you skin is super thirsty. My skin has gotten drier and sensitive, and La Roche Posay has been a lifesaver. Their cleansers (all of them and love the Lipikar Foaming Oil you mentioned) are incredible. I even love their sunscreen. Got samples from my friend who manages a dermatologist office and my skin finally stopped with bad reactions and felt moisturized. Thank you for so many products I can't wait to try, Jen. Blessings!
I think this may be my favorite video of yours! Thank you for the City Beauty alternative. I bought it per your recommendation. I love the formula, but just can’t get beyond the latex bandaid smell. Look forward to trying the Eucerin alternative 😊
Jen❤️! You're so geniune and informative, I'm loving your videos! I needed this reminder so badly, as I was getting carried away spending too much on expensive moisturizers this winter season.
Thank you so much Jenn! I have tried most of the high end and drugstore options you shared and completely agree with you. The Cocokind cream peels on me and I just didn’t manage to avoid that. Love the Tatcha one too 💜
I am so glad I found your channel. I am retiring soon so I won’t be able to afford the skincare I use now. Thanks for all the great drugstore recommendations!
Great review Jen! Skincare can be so expensive and so much of it seems to build on the name. I would love to see a review on all the Sunday Riley products. Thanks so much for all you do.
You always have the best videos. I will pick up some of the products you suggested. By the way, you look great and so much younger. For someone with very dry skin, you are doing an amazing job taking care of it.
Such a great video Jen. The Naturium products are in my cart. The marula oil is the perfect example of how the industry can gouge us. We live in a day and time where we have so many options. Many more affordable choices. Thanks for all the info!❤
I recently switched from Avene Retrinal to Naturium, and so far I also think the Naturium feels more hydrating. I’d like to try out more of their products. I’m thinking you may not use a dedicated eye cream ? I never used to, but the last few years I have. I do notice a difference in hydration. Also have been using gel eye patches in the a.m. as needed. Thanks for mentioning that HA may have a reverse effect in a dry climate. I live in Las Vegas, and will use Neutrogena Hydro-boost once in a while. Thanks for reviewing more affordable skincare for us. Appreciate it ! ☺️💜☺️
Although I don’t completely agree on the point that all expensive skincare isn’t worth it, because you should always look at the ingredients. I have both luxury and affordable skincare, and I could never replace all my luxury skincare with the affordable options, same with makeup - there are just some very unique products, like e.g. Danessa Myricks Powder Balm, but I appreciate the honesty in your videos and glad that you found what suits you and your skin type, because you look incredible and very young and fresh.
I think Danessa keeps her prices pretty low for luxury, along with Rare Beauty, and both have great products. Danessa has that MUA edge, but not intimidating to us regular people.
I relate to your retinol woes. My first skincare experience was using tretinoin at age 11. It dried my skin out so badly that I couldn't eat without the skin around my mouth bleeding, even as an oily, hormonal teenager. Scared me so bad I didn't even consider doing any skincare again until age 19 when I found skincare youtube. My next experience was using adapalene with some proper skincare tecniques like sandwiching and proper hydrating skincare. I used it for 9 months without getting past the initial dry skin phase, so I just stopped. A few months later the Beauty of Joseon retinal eye serum was released and I gave it a shot. I have been using it for 16 months as my face and neck retinoid and I love it. I'm near the end of my 3rd tube. Highly reccommend it as a starter retinoid for people who are intimidated by starting retinoids or people who've had bad experiences with stronger ones. It's like 10 bucks on Stylevana (where I get it) but it's 17ish on Amazon. Despite it being so affordable it's the most luxurious feeling skincare product I've ever tried. It just feels like a nourishing, creamy serum.
Hi!!! This is actually the first time I have found you and this video was sooo well done!! I feel like I am getting a personal consultation at some schmancy makeup/skincare counter at a store I have no business going into by a super knowledgeable and friendly specialist! Lol 😊 Will definitely be following you my dear!
You should try the Laniege water bank moisturizer. I think it could be a dupe for the Tatcha. I've been using it and really like it. It's scented like the Tatcha but a little more affordable😊
I know I already left a comment, but I got my Chanel blush today and I must say, I'm officially a fan of the Revlon blush above all other blushes. Nars comes pretty close, but the blush is double in price and while it is JUST AS GOOD, it's not any better. Thanks for this video Jen. I got 10 new favourite products. I'm home with a cold, so I was blessed to be able to try almost all of them right away to see if I like them. Thanks so so much. I am also an official fan of Cocokind. I loved the serum right away, but I didn't think I'd like the cream. It wasn't ... sliding like La Roche Posey rich cream does. However, it went into my skin so well that I think my body likes the clean formula. Thanks again. What a great video.
I just discovered the Laroche Posay Substiane Riche cream (it's lightly scented) and it definitely firms. It's $58, but omg- it comparable to $400 creams I've tried. Definitely give it a try for winter (with a drop of oil to help it spread), it's so nice & it shocks me no one talks about it. The eyecream by the Substiane line is amazing as well. I'm trying to get my hand on the serum... but it's sold out everywhere.
I so appreciate your content! I absolutely LOVE LaMer, I have mature skin and have never found ANYTHING that comes close to their Miracle Broth ingredients but cannot always justify the price tag! Thank you so much!😍
I have super dry skin so this video really made me happy! I'm going to try some of these and hope you do another one like it sometime in the future. Also, your makeup is gorgeous and I'd love a tutorial!
I love the debunking of these overpriced products! Over the years, I have spent far too much on luxury products but not anymore. The only higher priced product that I continue to use is Drunk Elephant TLC Framboos Glycolic Acid, as this works perfectly for my very dry skin. And for a night time moisturizer, I find coconut oil works better than anything else I have ever tried. When I was young, all the grandmothers who had beautiful complexions used basic skincare products that contained mineral oil, such as Ponds cream. That does make you wonder.
I am so thrilled to see that there are many lower priced items that are just good or better than high end. I have used the ELF moisturizer that reminds me of the Belief water cream. It has a light consistency that my dry skin just LOVES! I will be trying out some of these products especially that Marula oil. ❤️❤️❤️😘😘
Love this. My skin is so dry and itchy in winter. Besides skin care , I have added a supplement called photo- ceramides by sports research. It really has helped hydrate from the inside out. Just a little tip. Loved this video !
It seems odd that so many people do not know that the Laniege Cream Skin is for combo/oily skin types. I think description on Sephora is misleading. Fantastic video!!!
You are so good at what you do! Thank you for your clear and concise descriptions and knowledge! You have beautiful skin and are young so you don’t have to spend much at all. I am 61 and try to keep everything simple. CeraVe products, which continue to expand in their skincare line every year, is outstanding. For cleansers, I have never spent a lot of money because it is literally washed right off. Think of all the money you can save over a lifetime if you minimize cleanser costs! Every dermatologist I’ve ever met said there is no need to exfoliate face more than once or twice a year, if that! Fragrance free is the only way to go with all products, I totally agree. Other than those tips, I say, keep it all minimal and low cost. If there is a little extra spent, I say find some drugstore serums to try, and moisturize, moisturize, moisturize, especially at night. I also love a local friend who makes beautiful serums and lotions with no bad ingredients and it is the best!
Thanks, Jen! Love these recommendations! Most of them are even carried/in stock at my local Target! I can't wait to check these out!! Much appreciated!!
I used to work for “Luxury” brands...Channel, Dior, Ect... I had every luxury brand at my disposal to try/use...Sisley Paris, La Mer, La Prairie, ect...I have to say, 90% of them are NOT worth it.
Absolutely spot on.
Years ago I worked for Lancôme and would get reprimanded by my dept. manager if she caught me being “too honest” about products 😆
I am supporting and part of the
“Too honest club”. I work in the cosmetics industry and I know what you are talking about
You’re paying for the over-packaging.
Over-packaging, Over-paid spokespersons, Over-the-top advertising… plus high price points imply luxury regardless of performance.
Just curious. What do you think is actually worth the money?
Over the last 40 years, I've had several dermatologist tell me that the Olay and CereVe products were the best drug store products. I'm 65 and get a lot of compliments on my skin and Olay has been my go to for all these years. I remember when it was called Oil of Olay!😁
SHARON SHNEYER, I completely forgot about Oil of Olay in my rant above, and Dove as well.
Thank you for that information , I have used high end skin care but I have tried olay products and I really liked it and I would never use anything else
I love Olay face lotion the fragrance free one, it is simple and comfortable
Well, there is Vanicream!
Agree the ordinary are not great!
I'm HERE for this content Jen! Skincare is so expensive thank you for coming through for us with good (and cheaper!) alternatives.
I switched from higher end beauty lately to K beauty. Their skin care is top notch, they use proven, good ingredients, are usually cruelty free, and the prices can't be beat! My skin has never looked better! ☺️✨️
I agree, K-Beauty is wonderful and I have also used their products for many years.
Love K beauty. Which are your fav products?❤
@kimberlymej8584 I really like Elizavecca, Heimish, CosRx, to name just a few, and I'm also loving Hada Labo products (technically J beauty, but still lol).
@@JenPhelpsOooh, I would love a K-Beauty favorites video!!
I'll put it on the list!
We cause a lot of our own skin problems by using fragranced products, washing with hot or cold water, using unnecessary products, and over moisturizing and/or over exfoliating.
a lot of the expensive products do have tons of fragrance, i’ve noticed.
i have the same issue living in Tasmania very few products are available
I’m addicted to Maelove serums. I stopped overpaying for skincare about 2 years ago and haven’t regretted it at all. My skin is actually more even toned and smoother than it was when I paid more. It’s also less sensitive, so, I don’t think paying more means better quality or performance, whether it’s makeup or skincare!
Jessica Braun also recommends maelove serums.
Which serums do you use?
Me three❤❤❤❤❤
@@kimberlymej8584 I use a total of five, but not everyday or not all morning and night.
Expensive lol 😂
I'm using Inkeylist products right now, but the packaging reminds me of medicinal products and I don't like that
Jen you are an absolute treasure my dear ❤
Thank you for being a voice of reason for the budget conscious who want to look their best without breaking the bank. Bless you 🎉
I have mentioned this many times on this channel, but I love vanicream product's. Low cost and good for sensitive skin. I never got on the high end skincare bandwagon. I'm just too frugal, and a lot of high end skin care has a lot of botanicals and fragrance which irritates my skin
I'm blown away by the new Vanicream THD Vitamin C. It's the only thing I've added to my routine And after 2 months my skin looks so improved.
I always used Vanicream on my son when he was a baby and had eczema...it was great, I had a huge tub of it.
I'm glad those brands worked out for you Jen 😊
PS : In case you decide to visit France, you'll find those products at a cheaper price. Eucerin is a German brand so not 100% sure about !
Ooh good to know! :)
I also switched to using both of these brands and my skin has been its best ever.
SHARON SHNEYER, I completely forgot about Eucerin in my rant above. Many dermatologist recommended Eucerin.
Fragrance in skin care and makeup causes a lot of skin problems. People have no idea how problematic it is. And most, but fortunately not all, products have it!
Hi which products would you recommend to buy in Paris and the best pharmacy please to pick up the best French brands
@@20thcenturyrelicthat toner is excellent!
I’m so pleased that elf bought Naturium. I can consider buying that brand now. 🎉
I agree...I haven't found anything like it yet!
@@JenPhelps Have you tried the Bobbi Brown Vitamin face base? How does it compare? Thanks.
Purito is a great brand!
I always think of a cat rolled in a towel when I see that brand name...but it looks good! On my try list.
Thanks for this info. Will check out Purito.
Your skin looks absolutely glowing, your regime is obviously working well for you 🌟
Thanks Jen I really appreciate you giving us much more affordable options not everyone can afford high end products.
Love love love this video. ❤ Who doesnt want to save a few dollars and still get results! Thanks Jen
That last part
Absolutely true… you must work in the pharmaceutical industry (as I do)
It is true though that drugstore used to have a lot of stripping products

I hope the Naturium formulas don’t change now that they’re owned by Elf
What?!
Susan said nothing will change with formulas. I love Naturium 😊
@@krista436 me too, so I’m glad to hear her make assurances like that!
I would watch where they're made. Elf makes their stuff in China....Naturium may follow if they don't manufacture there now.
Yes, I hope Elf doesn't hoark up the beautiful Naturium skincare formulas. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
This is the order I use the products in (been getting lots of questions about this!).
1. Cleanser
2. Versed Toner
3. DAYTIME: Cocokind Barrier Serum then Eucerin Cream
Thank you! This is so helpful!
You are missing the most important thing in your daytime routine. Sunscreen.
Aw thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful! That's always my goal. :)
Love this video!! I’ve always been a fan of affordable or drugstore skin care. One of my favorites is the Peach Slices acne toner, which has AHA and BHA - personally it works better for me than the Paula’s choice one and it is only about $11!
Me too! I even used PC for so many years and it's getting too expensive, imo.
I'm 36, with dry skin, and just starting to get into skincare. Thanks for making this video!
I appreciate your honesty and hard work that you put into this project. What an awesome resource you have created for us. Thank you!!

Naturium usually has excellent products thus far ❤❤Thank you so much! I admit that Tatcha for winter is really nice ..I have dry skin

I wish I could use the vitamin enriched face base. I initially loved the way it felt, but the fragrance really tore me up.
@@stacym735 try the Revolution superbase as it’s fragrance free x
Hi just wanted to recommend the ILLIYOON Ceremide ATO Concentrate Cream, my husband has extremely dry skin and here in Ballarat, Melbourne the weather can really impact on his rosacea and this cream for him is a game changer. It’s soo buttery and nourishing without feeling greasy. It’s supposed to be a night cream but I think it’s a brilliant heavy duty day cream for extreme weather.
The Ordinary, the Inky List and Beauty Bay all have great skincare products Jen. Great video as always ❤

Thank you for this video Jen! I have slowly been trying to transition my skincare over to mostly drugstore as well. That city moisturizer sounds intriguing though!
Thank you so much for these options. You work so hard for us
I like buying Korean brands you had recommended before, I’m still using them and have repurchased them. They are so good on my mature dry skin.❤
Jen Phelps brings in the ability to dupe ANY luxury item and give the viewer, who’s not able to use that item for one reason or another, a matched product that is so incredibly close to the luxury item that it’s sometimes even better than the original… and she has a great head for business. She, also, brings a more mature face to the table, and the East Coast scene. MandyLea is the girl next door. She’s your best friend. She’s relatable. She’s always fresh-faced, and she represents stylish moms, who want to look and be trendy, while not looking ridiculous. And, she can do it with luxury or drugstore goods. I’d LOVE to see this happen! How can we make my dream a reality?
Blessings!
Oh wow Jen, been using Avene retinal for years per my dermatologist but definitely going to try the Naturium. Thank you😊
I think this may be my favorite video of yours!
Thank you for introducing us to some great affordable products, Jen.
Loving this! I was here for the Tatcha dupe but love how you conducted this video! Great dupes!
Thank you so much Jenn!
I have tried most of the high end and drugstore options you shared and completely agree with you.
The Cocokind cream peels on me and I just didn’t manage to avoid that. Love the Tatcha one too 💜
I've been wanting to try that Resurrection cream for a while, and now I think I just might. Nice video!
I am so glad I found your channel. I am retiring soon so I won’t be able to afford the skincare I use now. Thanks for all the great drugstore recommendations!
Always helpful to find reasonably priced skincare. Sometimes you’re just paying for the name.
Cerave is amazing.. Day and night lotions are amazing! A little goes along way. They are also made by dermatologists..
Great review Jen! Skincare can be so expensive and so much of it seems to build on the name. I would love to see a review on all the Sunday Riley products. Thanks so much for all you do.
Fantastic dups Jen. Thank you for your honest reviews.
Thank you for this! It validates what I have been trying do for my own skin care, Thanks for introducing me to Naturium products.
Trader Joe’s has 100% organic cold pressed marula oil (exact same as Drunk Elephant) for 9.99. My derm got me hooked on it!
How is marula oil better or different than argan oil? ❤ thank you!
Great video idea!!!
That sounds amazing, I'll be sure to check that out!!
Hi!!! This is actually the first time I have found you and this video was sooo well done!! I feel like I am getting a personal consultation at some schmancy makeup/skincare counter at a store I have no business going into by a super knowledgeable and friendly specialist! Lol 😊
Will definitely be following you my dear!
Nice! Very interested in the Naturium products!
Thanks Jen!
Elf does have really great skincare!
@ghosstryder - which Elf moisturizer is like the Belif? Thanks if you see this 😊
Thank you for the Olay serum recommendation, I love it!!
Great video, Jen! I have got to get that cleansing oil! Some of those Naturium products sound interesting, too.
Perfect timing!! I too have decided to stop my Curology formula. Just plain fed up with all the side affects. Thanks for some good ideas!!
