Oh man the Yer-2 brings back memories of losing arcade matches in a minute.
Now its memories of dying in a minute lol. Trying to fly a Yer-2 in arcade these days all the fighters are just like: Mine. Mine. Mine.
Some bombers even needed turret removals, bomb bay doors removed etc just to achieve Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW - a very important aspect in aviation). Like Pe-8 with 5 ton bomb, Tu-4 with it's maximum bombload, B-29 as well, Lancasters with blockbuster bombs, Wellingtons with torpedoes and 4000 lb bombs etc.
Lancasters were completely fine with blockbusters. (4000-12,000 lbs bombs). It was the 24,000 lbs GrandSlam they needed modification for. And the bouncing bomb (though not for weight, just aiming and stuff). Lancasters standard capacity was about 18,000 lbs.
As well as defensive armaments- the b-29 flew a few missions with just tail gunners so as to get maximum bombing weight capacity

@@uisce_ ahhh yeah it's fine. Britain had lots of other names for specific groups of bombs. Tall boy and grand slam were the earthquake bombs for instance. The blockbusters were actually named because they remove the roofs from entire blocks of houses allowing the incendaries to then fall onto the wooden flooring
The Yer-2 is actually historically accurate because they had tough time taking off with it.

I remember the YER-2 Era. Enough of them and the game was lost on their first dive.
So according to some historical sites, the Yer 2 had the ACh-30B V12 that each made 1500hp. In game, it says max power is around 1200hp, which correlates with the earlier M-105 engines. So it seems that War Thunder gave the low hp to the name of the actual high hp engines. Surprisingly, that model in game is supposed to be the best version made of it, before changing the name to the Yer-4. The payload was a one-off 5,000 kg but was meant to be a high altitude long range bomber. The 5,000kg payload went over the MTOW which led the Yer-2 to being able to only fly 600km round trips with 1.5 tons of fuel, which is completely in-effective in a war. So it was possible to carry 5,000, but it was only done once or twice.
Hey PHLY, the YER-2 could take these massive loads because the engines were diesels!! So the horsepower would not be that high, but the torque would be PHenomenal!!!!
Correct me if I'm wrong as I'm just a humble mechanical engineer, not an aerospace specialist or anything, but surely diesels would be at a disadvantage for aircraft? In my way of thinking surely horsepower would be more important than torque alone, as the engine only has to turn a propeller and not pull the aircraft or apply any mechanical force through gearing or linkages or anything. Just a straight shaft to the propeller on 1:1. So it just needs to have enough torque to turn the prop, which is only facing air resistance and will only weigh a couple hundred kg, maybe a tonne at most on larger aircraft? The plane derives its thrust from the rate at which the prop can turn which correlates more closely to the horsepower (rate of torque) than the torque itself, right?
I mean big torque will help get the props spinning from a standstill faster but the pilot will be waiting for max thrust for takeoff anyway so it'll only really make a difference in responsiveness when taxiing. For takeoff and flight you're gonna want max thrust for which you're gonna want to maintain the highest possible prop speed for which you need big horsepower. And diesels don't rev that high and they're less efficient in low-oxygen environments if I'm not mistaken so why would anyone make a diesel aero engine?
Maybe I'm being dumb and missing something here. Just my thoughts on it anyway, don't take my word for any kind of expert opinion.

@@marmite8959 I'm guessing they used diesel engines on aircrafts in 1930s for several reasons:
-they're potentially safer (no electrical problems, fuel isn't volatile),
-diesel is easier to refine/cheaper,
-they already have big, powerful diesel engines and know-how to work with them.
They moved away from diesel aircraft in later years, so these advantages weren't enough, clearly.

I forget the name of the plane but one of the bombers before the pe-8 is literally incapable of getting off the ground unless fully upgraded. U could only get one bomb run off and then it just would crash upon trying to take off again.

Day 5: Phly, you should try the Catalina again! Now it has 4 1,000lb naval mines with 500kg of TNT equivalent each at 1.7!
Yer-2 _could_ carry 5000kg bombs, but it limited it's range to only 1000km (by comparison, it could do 3000km with 3000kg bomb load, and over 5000km with 1000kg loadout).
It's a special purpose long range bomber, not a tactical bomber, so it's slow climb is acceptable. It was sometimes used as a tactical bomber, but it didn't fare so well.
Phly the earlier Yer 2 are much better with 1k less bomb load. But you get like 30% better performance.

Yer-2's practical bomb load irl was 3000kg, while 5000kg is its maximum possible-only-in-the-most-desparate-case load... and Gaijin, in its early days when they still cared a little bit about balance, gave the Yer-2 in game the maximum load while only letting all other bombers take their practical load. More precisely, they did it so that Yer-2's boming power in Arcade can be equal to that of the Do-217

Spaded the Shackleton during the last event and it was the same way. Constant spam about needing the flaps to takeoff. But it could take off without the flaps on a forward fighter runway easily despite carrying 15,000 lbs of bombs. Half the time i'd deploy them to get it to shut up not because i actually needed them.

German little and large challenge. Take out the Fw200C-1 in Tank RB and get three ground kills. Or if that isn't entertaining enough, take out the Ju87D-5 with the 7.92mm Gun Pods and get three combined air/ground kills with guns only. Have fun. Attempt 377.
Also, a proper B-29 Tank RB battle where you actually bomb something.
Phly, you should try the G91 with AA 20 Nords in Air RB. Obviously they're MCLOS but, if you get em close, they proximity detonate. They're not too hard to get used to and very effective if you get proficient at it.
Use the LA-200, 37mm canons with 40 or so pen is pretty good at sending light and medium tanks back to the loading screen
My best guess is MEC for the Yer. Maybe tweaking the prop pitch might help

Still want to see you play Brit 8.7 with Rooikats and the scimitar. Currently its the br/line-up I enjoy the most. cheapest scimitar spawn I've had [with bullpups] is 312pts and its such a great aircraft, so much thrust, same as the Phantom II [dry, without afterburner] pretty much.
BTW don't deploy flaps for take-off until right before you go to lift off, until that point they are just extra drag.
My favorite part is definitely 15:04. Phly noises are hilarious.

I like to keep flaps in for takeoff, until just before I need to rotate. Achieve maximum takeoff speed on full load, then put out flaps. Barely makes it.

Wikipedia says that the Yer-2 could carry a maximum of 3,000 kg (2kg internally, 1kg externally), but then goes on to say it could carry a maximum of 5,000 kg internal to the bomb bay.
Sounds like BS lol
It did carry 5,000 kg apparently but it could only do it barely and it couldn't fly long distances as it has to fly with much less fuel etc. So it basically made it an ineffective bomber when given 5000 kg.

"Up to 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) of bombs could be carried in the bomb bay and two 500-kilogram (1,102 lb) bombs could be carried externally. Up to 4,600 kg (10,141 lb) of fuel could be carried."

The 110 at the end wasn't a revenge plane. He got killed by a t34 and came back in a heavy fighter to hunt bombers, so the opposite of a revenge plane.
