    Nice to see a repair result in a success rather than go to waste due to endless rabbit holes. A good way to celebrate 10k+ subs

      Yes, this was originally (when it came in) a job for a client but they decided to instead go with data-recovery only, so I acquired the unit and tried my luck.

    Just started watching your channel last week. I an a fan of Louis Rossmann and I kept wondering who is this "Paul Daniels" that he keeps referring to. I got a copy of your OpenBoard view software and was blown away by it. I am a retired System Administrator and Exchange server administrator, now I spend my time watching UA-cam videos on car repairs and computer repairs. Keep up the great videos.

      Usually if it's crucial, I have sheets of metal, about the same as iPhone shields, which I fold up to make a nice shield; makes it easier for when I have to do it again. Real trick is making sure that metal doesn't touch anything else with a low melting point, else "oops"

    Smashing job :-D.
    Nasty pcb, it looked like it needed a jetwash :)
    Some of the one's i've seen louis have in for repair needed toilet bleach sprayed over them, food/drink and unknown deposits, yuck yuck :-(.
    So far i've only seen thick dust on laptop boards, and a dust duvet's in main machines.

    • @pldaniels
      @pldaniels  5 років тому +1

      If it's not from a donor board, then it'll be just from my collection of spares that I buy from the electronics supplier ( Farnell / Element14 / Mouser / Digikey ). If you want a broad spread of parts, you can get 'books' of 0402, 0201 resistors from places like eBay or AliExpress.

    aren't you worried about ESD? no gloves, no ESD mat, no ground? Just curious:) great vid!

    • @pldaniels
      @pldaniels  5 років тому +1

      I think some people are predisposed to being an ESD hazard (my wife is certainly one). Approaching 40 years now with various electronics, including the incredibly sensitive 4000 series CMOS chips from the 80s, and to date, no issues. Possibly good luck, yes.
      The other key thing though is that once parts are assembled on to a board, it's quite difficult to do any sort of ESD damage with the human discharge.

    • @pldaniels

      No. Easier/simpler to just cram a 4GB SODIMM in there instead. From what I've seen, trying to fix one results in two broken slots.

    • @pldaniels
      @pldaniels  5 років тому

      There's some boardviews for phones available but overall the quality is sub-par. FlexBV/OBV can read several formats ( and we're always trying to add more ) but at this point for some reason the array of phone boardviews are locked up by the likes of ZXW/EasyDraw/Phoneboard

      Donor boards in my workship will definitely turn in to cat-like critters over time, just simply from the strands of hair that slip in on the air alone (cats aren't permitted in this room). Still, not much point me USC'ing donors :D
