Here in the UK I don't get many bug problems except for the odd infestation in a console if someone has spilt something sweet and sticky, the ants love that. Interesting you mention about rates and allowing a little for unexpected problems, I've always worked on an hourly rate but I'm fair with it. I don't charge if I'm installing Windows again because I'm doing something else while that's going on and the same with cloning drives. I can normally set things running and start another job so I only charge for the time it takes to do the job/repair. I know people who do charge just to sit and watch a drive clone and they always seem to have plenty of work. Strange eh!
I think the problem in general with an hourly-rate situation is that if you start slipping in to a rabbit hole then the customer likely is going to bawk hard at the hours expended. Downside of fixed cost jobs like this is of course when a lot of them start being trainwrecks too and you have to expend a lot of time and your subsequent hourly rate is terrible.
nicely done! I use vinegar on corrosion and at the end wipe everything with baking soda to neutralize it. and toothpicks instead of blades because bamboo wood is a little softer
@@pldaniels just a question Paul: do you know how to flash/rewrite the eprom of BQ chips like those found on laptop batteries when you don't know the unseal code? Saw that the NLBA soft can do it but ai can't reproduce it
@@pldaniels it was SATA ssd attached to a USB to cheap SATA adapter case best thing is see the client blame the SSD/ADAPTER while if that happened on any non apple device, they would have sure blamed the other device.
Yes, that can work too. My next option if the clearing out physically didn't work would have been to have to replace the connector - definitely NOT what I was wanting to do :-o
Is the lcd bridge cable that screwed to the board that connects the lcd to the board paired to the board on the m1 models? Thanks, great watch as always.
The flex itself shouldn't be but there are some electronics on the board on the LCD itself that can sometimes be paired/unique ( ie, the A2442 is badly prone for this )
What would you say is the best part mixture in regards to the water/IPA contact cleaning you use? In other words, is it 50% water and 50% alcohol or something else? Thanks for the knowledge you share on these videos!!
Yes, if you follow the previous technician's diagnostic, you may miss the real issue. Use your own diagnostic process. Also agree with full price. Anytime you offer a discount, it will haunt you later. 🍷
Really had to - if I didn't then there was a 99% chance within a week that machine would have spontaneously stopped working as the cable drifted out and it'd be all my fault :)
Reminds me a bit of using HCl as a flux... works brilliantly, until a few days/weeks later and your board has been corroded to death :) The problem will be ensuring you get things really cleaned up, if using something like acetic acid / vinegar I'd be most likely wanting to ultrasonic clean to clear out any traces of that acid.
@@pldaniels was thinking about, because I'm always using vinegar on retro devices (mostly to stop leaked battery corrosion like the "Varta of death", preventing eating away the PCB...). Of course cleaning it good afterwards with IPA/Contact cleaner...
So the new macbooks were medamore sensitive to ultrasonic cleaning. In other words they fall apart to prevent ppl fixing them. Another smart move on behalf of Apple: make things more expensive and vulnerable. So ppl will change them more often supporting Apple diving sales. LOL
Some circuit boards in devices are painted over with a clear waterproofing. I wonder if when you buy a macbook its a good idea to open it up and spray a clear coat over everything. Perhaps 3M can make a new product. More consumer products. Yay.
you guy deliver more effect to environment safety and saving energy than any politician can do ever ! TOP!
Thank you Joe.
I love it when a job is so straight forward. Thanks for the entertainment Paul.
It's nice to see you here again, Paul. Thank you for the video. Hope to see you sooner than later. Kindest regards from Madrid.
Great work Paul

Many thanks for the Superchat! I actually forget that it's a thing until they pop up like this. Greatly appreciated, thank you.
Good job Paul!
Wonderful job sir, looking forward to another vids 👍🏻
Nice fix. Thanks Paul.

More to come!

Absolutely bamboo is a nicer option in many situations ( I also have the hogbristle brush too that I keep forgetting to use)

WOW, finally getting notifications from YT only 23 hours late.
*Thanks* for the video Paul. 👍👍
Love it, thanks for all your content!
Glad you enjoy it!
i actually saw an SSD plugged that made the M1 reboot instantly, same ssd read perfectly on my hackintosh
That can certainly happen with some devices, especially if it makes the USB-C PD chip hiccup.

Nice one Paul as usal your good nice job done
Nice vid, had the same before (not same model) with the jammed battery fpc. Small ipa bottle with nozzle washed out a small bit of plastic 😁

80/20 ~ 60/40 IPA I usually work with. I think 50/50 would start leaving too much water around. I also use either distilled or deionised water.
Great Repair, Great Video! Thanks.

I am constantly reminded of both.
Nice one Paul!
The master at work. Awesome. But I genuinely feel as though this was a walk in the park for you hahaha
Going the extra mile to fix the flex cable connector!

19:29 an obstruction. Maybe it's one of Kramer's Titleist golf balls 😂
thanks
Is the 70% Alcohol okay for cleaning?
Yes. Consider washing after with 99 too
🖐👍
When did you get hot tweezers!?!?!?!
Nevermind, I must be seeing things.
Indeed... was going to say :D
How about using vinegar on those corroded pads first, cleaning with IPA then?

I see the macbook and wonder if the customer is 8 years, when they inherited the laptop from a parent or older sibling?
