It means the devil did nothing. WE did it. And we know it.
The line that ties it all together is “I’ll tell you one time, you’re to blame”.
We do all those things and blame them on some made up devil so we never have to take responsibility for our own actions.
Mick was 25 when they came out with this song. Just exceptional from such a young age.
Not really.Kids were better educated back then.My Dad went to school with Keith Richards.It was a working class area & the old Man got a degree in physics. People became more mature quicker and we're more intelligent back then.
I remember my dad trying to explain this song to me. When I got older and figured it out for myself I realized what a terrible job he did 😂

Weirdly enough it sounds like Lucifer playing the guitar solo. I literally can picture a red,pointy-tailed,horned and hoven Satan dancing around playing the solo on a Gibson SG.

The devil is basically saying of all the sins he has done, man is not that innocent either, man has conspired with me, and has done far worse things, so please have some sympathy on me...
If you look closely at the lyrics here, you may come to realize that this song is NOT about the Devil.

If a cop is to a criminal, as a sinner is to a saint, and as heads is to tails, then Lucifer is to "God".

Saw them do this song in Pittsburgh in 1989. Mick started at the top of the stage at least 50-80 high and sang the first part under red lights. He then (must have had an elevator in the stage) came down to stage floor to finish the song. Best song of the night and my favorite Stones song. Great music and incredible lyrics.

When did you see them John? It scares me to buy a ticket when they come here because they’re in their 70s. I’m not sure they’ll have the same kind of energy like Aerosmith when they come. A cpl of the new Stones songs sound pretty good.

Would love to hear your take of "Bobby Brown Goes Down" By Frank Zappa. In the times we are living in lgbtq movement, our free speech is turning into you can say this but not that. Because the comments are usually full of song requests and they wouldn’t be able to read and do them all, but I do understand the not trusting of links. When I became a member it was public streams they’re thinking of doing them again but that was even harder to get requests cause it required the same thing multiple requests and a vote from all in the stream. They also hold donation streams every once and awhile. Ik getting YT or Patreon subscriptions rub some the wrong way or they don’t have the extra money but imo it’s the best way to get requests cause we a have a members only livestream and in 15 months I’ve had almost 50 reactions. I’m just a member and subscriber I have no actual vested interest in saying this or convincing people to pay technically it lowers my odds of getting more reactions 🤣🤣🤣

Im not rich by any stretch of the imagination 🤣🤣 but if there is ever an open stream like the one that just ended id urge you to come and you would stand a good chance at being gifted a membership, they gift them and the community gifts them too which opens the members only videos and streams where you’d have a good chance if they have the normal members only stream every Tuesday like it usually is you’d have 4 chances for a request till your month is over.

We have free will and choice. Evil can only tempt, it's up to someone to take the offer and actually DO evil. Which is why good even means anything. Good only matters because we choose it.
Like the song says:
Pilate, the Bolsheviks, the Axis powers, etc, all these people CHOSE to do evil. From leaders, down to cowards choosing to go along, or choosing to indulge evil temptations.
The temptation is there, sure, but a person must decide to allow themselves to be tempted.
Evil needs cooperation to bear fruit. There is always a choice to refuse. Even if it is with a weapon to one's neck. What is life worth if you throw away your soul in order to stay breathing? Not much. Might as well be a living corpse.
"So show some courtesy, some sympathy, and some taste.
And use all your well learned politesse, or I'll lay your soul to waste"
You got it. The puppet master. The Devil doesn't need to control all. He just needs to control those with influence. Humanity has a hive mentality. They like to follow. So controlling the few will control the many.
I have moments where I ponder the idea that it's not Satan himself, it's God. God was also there for everything described, and he begins to list contrasting things like "every cop is a criminal and all the sinners saints" and then says "as heads is tails just call me, Lucifer" All of those are contrasting opposites. That logically follows that his name is not Lucifer, but the opposite. After all, God is a jealous God and will do anything including threaten his children with eternal torment if he is not the focus of their adoration and praise.

Thanks for the video. I've seen so many breakdowns where listeners don't even realize Lucifer is telling the story until it's explicitly spelled out after the solo. Next, try the song My God by the band Jethro Tull on the album Aqualung. It has a similar theme but it's presented in a much different manner. If you don't know the band's style please don't read up on them. Allow yourself a real musical surprise, because Tull sounds nothing like any other band.
I'll be going to see them in Las Vegas at Aligiant Stadium. It will be my 5th time seeing these cats, my wife's first. The best song on the new album is Sweet Sounds of Heaven which is a duet with Lady Gaga and accompanied with Stevie Wonder tickling the Ivory keys. There are two versions of the song, one is about 5 minutes and has a cool lyric video, but the 7 minute version is absolutely amazing. I have been a huge Stones fan for the better part of 40 years, and it has been a long long time since they have put out a truly great song, but this song is most definitely among the great Stones tunes of all time. A complete polar opposite of Sympathy for the Devil which happens to be my favorite song by the Rolling Stones. Enjoy the show, I cant wait. My mental health has been in shambles for the past five years but when I found out my wife scored tickets, my mental state has ticked upwards. You could literally do a top 100 songs by these guys and have to leave some amazing music off the list.
