This is one of my top 5 songs ever. It was ahead of its time in 68 in many ways - a precursor to some of the harder rock to come in the following years by many other acts. The lyrics are genius. To me, it's the perfect telling of the story of the devil - whether you believe he's a real entity or just a character. I think the theme is summed up in the line "I shouted out "Who killed the Kennedys?", when after all, it was you and me." Politesse is a formal politeness - sort of the polish of the upper or political class. He mentions it's their "well-learned politesse" - the kind you're born and bred into in certain families or parts of society. Great reaction. I LOVE The Rolling Stones. I'd love to see you guys react to "Miss You", "Paint It Black", and/or "You Can't Always Get What You Want". You should still go down that Supertramp rabbit hole. :) Also, react to "Long Train Runnin'" by The Doobie Brothers when you can. You won't be sorry.
My favorite band of all time. I saw them for the first time at age 15, back in 1973. Unbelievable musicianship, showmanship and Keith and Mick's lyrics are always powerful and intelligent.
There very best live song is "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" (and it even has sax for Ryan!!) They go OFF on this number..you gotta see it. Thanks for another great reaction.
The Stones have been a force on Earth for over fifty years. They have always been, the good, the bad (ass), and the ugly! The Stones are like a hurricane, but you don't mind getting wet. P.S., Rock in peace Charlie, and thank you!

My God! The Rolling Stones man! They are one of the front runners of the best bands that have ever lived! Their lyrics and musicianship is outstanding and they are so undoubtedly phenomenal live! Mick and Keith just destroy everything they touch! Not one bad song period! They are icons for a reason and everyone knows the Stones! Their music influenced so many people it’s beyond belief! Too good to even count how many albums are pure perfection! My God to be around during that era had to be unbelievable! I’m so jealous of my mother who saw everyone and I mean everyone! As a double major in college and my second was theology, people need to realize Lucifer was Gods favorite son so people need to read sometimes. Just wouldn’t love humans…and can ya blame him??? Not so much!!!
Thanks for doing this as a tribute to Charlie Watts. As for the Stones themselves, they are fundamental, and Mick Jagger is an icon in the industry. Tbh, I didn't get beyond the hits with the Stones until later in life; they were a little too dirty and mean. But after I had lived a little experiencing both the ups and the downs of this life, their music started to resonate - I finally "got" them. Nowadays, I rarely listen to their hits, but they're part of my regular music rotation. The Mick Taylor era is their best. One day you should dive into it. You won't regret it.
Thanks guys for your tributes to the great man Charlie Watts who sadly passed away this week. The Stones are what everyone say they are, the greatest rock band in history and their contribution to music is a legacy they can all be proud of. Please check out 'Gimme Shelter' with the amazing Merry Clayton on backing vocals.
It seems that nobody in the comments section has the meaning or a close meaning of this songs lyrics. The Devil wants sympathy from mankind because he's been wrongly blamed for the evils of the world. He didn't do those horrible things, Pontius Pilot betraying Jesus, the murder of Czar Nicholas and his family when the Communists seize power of Russia, he rode a tank and held a general's rank as a Nazi when the Blitzkreig happened in WWII, he was there when JFK was assassinated but he says it was YOU AND ME. The Devil didn't do those things, man did those awful things to each other. He was present as the instigator and the force of evil that man already has in his soul. The Devil is telling mankind to give him a break, have some sympathy for him because he was just a player in the acts of evil throughout time. He was always there to see it happen and maybe to be the puppet master. But it is man who is truly evil not him. That's what I understand to be the actual meaning of the lyrics for Sympathy for the Devil.
When I was in college and this was fresh and new, I remember my friends and I totally stoned dancing around a table and singing "Woo Hoo" with this song. It was wild. LOL Never gets old.
The live version on Get Yer Ya Ya's Out is worth a listen for musicianship. Mick Taylor brings a whole different energy to the song. In essence I interpret the song as We as the human race have the devil in all of us. It is easy to blame satin for all the atrocities of the world on evil and not be accountable, but like Mick said in the song "who killed the Kennedy's when after all it was You and Me". Then in the last verse where Lucifer basically says "so if you meet me, have some courtesy, have some sympathy and some taste" meaning it was all us. I read that in the recording of this song Charlie stated that they did maybe three completely different sounding versions of this song, spending an entire day on each recording and decided on this one because of the percussions and how it flowed.
If you listen to the song Happy where Keith does the lead vocals pay attention to when Mick comes in and then you realize just how good of a singer he is.
Dudes ..they have hundreds of jems all the way back to the psychedelic era. Like start at **2000 Light Years from Home** or if you want a rocking groooove "Can't you Hear me Knocking" great guitar.
They said it seemed every time they played this song something bad happened , The song 'Gimme Shelter' was in response to the tragic stabbing death caught on video at the free concert at the Altamont Speedway , Cal.
This is one of the few rock songs that can be called truly scary. And outlandish, when you consider how many British Army veterans would have heard some kid singing about being a German general while the bodies stank. It would be like someone today singing about flying a jet into the World Trade Center for Allah.
As the French writer, Charles Baudelaire, warned in the 19th century, "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he doesn't exist"....and so it is in particular with western man who is blind to the reason of evil in our world.....As the always brilliant C.S. Lewis warned , there are 2 extremes when dealing with the fallen one...."One extreme is to have to a strong attraction to the King of darkness...the other extreme is to not even acknowledge his reality in our fallen world".....
Sympathy For The Devil is a political song ( all the events mentioned deaths of Jesus, czar, Kennedys). The song is from their most political album Begger's Banquet from 1968 ( Street Fighting Man, Salt Of The Earth). Rolling Stones performed Sympathy on their 1970 European tour and not again till 1975.
This song is based on the book "The Master and Magarita" by Mikhail Bulgakov, a masterpiece, given to Jagger by his then girlfriend Marianne Faithfull.
The guy playing the conga is an African drummer who plays the ritual beat that supposed induce people into a trance. There is an original Rolling Stones video that UA-cam removed back in 2011 due to the Directors copyright complaint which fully displays exactly what the Rolling Stones intended for this song. The video is mocking the goings on in a a Holiness Church!!
Brian Jones played the maracas on this song. This was also the last studio album with Jones' picture. The band Psychic TV did a song in tribute to Brian Jones called "Godstar" (you should listen to it). Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman were the only members of the band who attended Brian's funeral. BTW the cover shown was banned and replaced with a white gold-embroidered cover.
You said, "give him the Oscar" on an audio version, so Imagine how completely he inhabits the character on stage! Saw a vid of this song Live, just yesterday, that I had not seen before. It looks like a relatively small venue... In the crowd, dancing like nobody's lookin', is John Lennon! Any fan of this song should see that vid, it is incredible!
That was the Rock and Roll Circus. The whole show is on yt, with Jethro Tull, The Who, Lennon in a one off with Clapton, Mitch Mitchell...whole bunch of folks.
R.I.P. Charlie Watts. I've been a Stones fan since 1963-64. You guys need to listen to more Rolling Stones. This great song is from their great album "Beggars Banquet." Please also do "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" on their album "Sticky Fingers." btw, they didn't just kick Brian Jones "to the curb." He was fucking up big time, not going to rehearsals and playing poorly because he was so messed up on drugs.
In the world of Beatles v Stones, I'm definitely on the Beatles end of the spectrum. But this song is one of the best songs of the entire 20th century, no doubt. I sometimes fantasize arranging it as a two-piano concerto. The whole song boils down to one line near the end: "I'll tell you one time: you're to blame." Humans invented this "devil" thing as a scapegoat to blame for the sh*t we ourselves do.
My older sister is a humongous Rolling Stones fan, so I grew up literally listening to the Stones, so I knew my Stones lyrics pretty much before I knew my alphabet. I'm still a huge Stone fan. I think that they are far superior to the Beatles they have grit, guts, bravado, gravitas, and anything else you can think of. They have woven the fabric of my life.
There was certainly some nasty friction in the band, but Brian Jones' departure was of his own making. It's similar to Syd Barrett's departure from Pink Floyd, but Syd fried his mind with hallucinogens.
The story as I heard it is that their manager told them "If John and Paul" (Lennon and McCartney) "can write songs, so can you." He locked Mick and Keith in a room and said "don't come out until you've written a song." I don't know if that's true but it sure makes a good story! I do believe that if they had stayed a cover band they would have died of obscurity. The genius songwriting of Jagger and Richards propelled them to greatness. I suggest you try "You Can't Always Get What You Want" or "Gimme Shelter" (both please use the studio version - if you do "You Can't Always..." you'll instantly see why!)
"So how many Stones songs do you know?"..."I'd say about 5"..."So, the hits..." Here are some of the Rolling Stones hits, ( I picked 30). Top Ten, (1st Tier)... Gimme Shelter, Jumping Jack Flash, Sympathy For the Devil, Angie, It's Only Rock & Roll, Street Fighting Man, Wild Horses, Heartbreaker, Brown Sugar, Tumblin' Dice 2nd Tier... Satisfaction, Paint it Black, Honky Tonk Woman, You Can't Always Get What You Want, She's a Rainbow, Beast of Burden, Some Girls, Under My Thumb, She's So Cold, Happy 3rd Tier... Love Is Strong, Ruby Tuesday, Get off My Cloud, Shattered, Time Is On My Side, Hang Fire, Let's Spend the Night Together, 19th Nervous Breakdown, Mother's Little Helper, The Last Time Any classic rock fan would recognize them all. Some people will complain I didn't even list some of their favorites.
Yeah we know they have a ton! We were just referring to the hits they usually play on the radio here. Which seems to be the same 7 or 8 songs over and over, unfortunately. Good thing we still have plenty to hear for the first time.
@@ViewsFromThe502 Hey, thanks for the reply. If you want to show the boys their absolute best song, and in my opinion one of the top 3 rock & roll songs of all time, do "Gimme Shelter".
RIP Charlie. Google tells me that woo woo is said 124 times during Sympathy! I never really got the RS when I was younger, but have grown more appreciative of them as the years have passed. It is interesting who has covered this, one of my fave artist of all time joins that long long list - Bryan Ferry. Thanks guys.
The Jean-Luc Godard film "Sympathy for the Devil" documents the creation of this song. Sympathy For The Devil 4K - Film Clip: The Whoo-Whoo's ua-cam.com/video/xQKkCxYIGPc/v-deo.html
Check out the live performance from Rock and Roll Circus. Amazing energy and you can catch a glimpse of John Lennon, and I think Pete Townshend and Keith Moon of The Who grooving in the audience!
No, we're the devil when we want to be. Unfortunately, we seem to want to be evil far too much. "After all, it's just you and me". If you're paying attention, you realize who he's introducing us to. Ourselves.
***TRUE STORY ALERT*** The background vocalists are actually Anita Pallenberg and her girlfriends, who claimed they were all part of a coven. They were in the booth with the sound engineer as the Stones were laying down tracks for this song. They spontaneously started chanting the “HOO HOO!” And the sound engineer liked it so much he punched them in so the band could hear what he was hearing, and the rest is history.
The gist of your story is true, but it was Anita Pallenberg (girlfriend of both Brian Jones and Keith Richards) who participated, along with Marianne Faithfull, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts, and Jimmy Miller.
The Stones is the master of rock n roll. The song is about people making bad and terrible decisions and blaming it on the devil. We all make our own choices. God works with Satan. Just read it in the book of Job.
Politesse refers to your level of politeness or etiquette. So the devil is saying use everything you learned of being polite to him or he will lay your soul to waste!
A classic song that is so dark. Very pointed and meaningful lyrics. It's about the evil that men/humans do. Check out the previously unreleased 1968 film from The Rolling Stones Rock N Roll Circus that shows them playing this song. Jagger's energy is amazing. Look quickly a couple of times and you'll see John Lennon and Yoko Ono in the crowd; Lennon is very animated obviously enjoying the performance.
@@paulqueripel3493 I didn't notice them. I think it's interesting when contemporary musicians go to the concerts of other artists; it shows a true appreciation.
🦋 Absolutely One of my favorites. "Paint it Black" is one I hope you guys react to one day. Now I want to go Play the Old Black Ops Campaign.😁 RIP Charlie Watts May He Forever be Remembered Through this Great Music he gifted us all. Among the Legends Never to be Forgotten.
Mick was great on this number. Keith was also. As was Charlie. But seriously… Bill Wyman’s bass playing mastery all through the tune just rules the day!
Jones was dismiss from the band because of a very very heavy hard drugs use, even confirm by Paul McCartney, and a month later drowned in a swimming pool.
Vinyl boys. It's all about vinyl. You can hold the cover and see real shit. And about he song? I've heard it's just about humans being the devil. The bad shit we've done.
Weighing in on Jagger: Mick and his father were both gymnasts, and he still practises some sort of exercise regime to keep in shape for concerts. Imo, I feel that Mick's vocalizations aren't that much of a reach for him; I've never seen footage of him where he seems to be straining. And, despite the fact that he's one of the most charismatic front-men in rock history, I'm one woman who's never found him to be attractive in the way Ty implied. So I guess there's one or two of us out there, lol.
It's brilliant writing, takes you on history lesson from Satan's prospective and Satan's saying " who killed the Kennedy when after all it was you and me", you see it's never been just Satan we have had our hands in all of it.
One of the greatest songs in rock!!

@@tomloft2000 Thanks for that. This is the problem in going with memory…lol.
Give me shelter is an awesome song
*Gimme Shelter
The Stones is the master of rock n roll. The song is about people making bad and terrible decisions and blaming it on the devil. We all make our own choices. God works with Satan. Just read it in the book of Job.
Still Resonates Today in 2024
Checkout - can’t you hear me knocking or the live. Version of Sympathy from 1969 - get yer yas yas out. - mick Taylor on guitar!!!!
Politesse refers to your level of politeness or etiquette. So the devil is saying use everything you learned of being polite to him or he will lay your soul to waste!
"the nature of my game" - John 10:10
Could it be story from the Faust that is what that song reminds me of!
It's not Politics, it's Politesse. Nothing to do with politics. It's politeness, decorum, proper etiquette.
Beat review of Sympathy for the Devil I have heard yet......Great job.
Also Pete Townshend , and possibly Keith Moon.
@@paulqueripel3493 I didn't notice them. I think it's interesting when contemporary musicians go to the concerts of other artists; it shows a true appreciation.
Charlie watts!!! RIP.
greatest song ever! rip, Charlie 😔
pol·i·tesse formal politeness or etiquette.
Quite right. From the Latin for "polished", not politics which is from the Greek for "city".
"Waiting on a Friend", "Miss You"
Mick was great on this number. Keith was also. As was Charlie. But seriously… Bill Wyman’s bass playing mastery all through the tune just rules the day!
The guy on the right looks like Brandon Nimmo of the New York Mets
Jones was dismiss from the band because of a very very heavy hard drugs use, even confirm by Paul McCartney, and a month later drowned in a swimming pool.
I don't know if it's been suggested yet, but you should really check out "Can't you hear me knocking" by the Rolling Stones
Can ya hear me knocking..stones excellent
The Master and Margherita is a fantastic book, really funny.
They came good in the end
Bill Wyman dominates this song....
Vinyl boys. It's all about vinyl. You can hold the cover and see real shit. And about he song? I've heard it's just about humans being the devil. The bad shit we've done.
Yall should know 25 Stones song…dont stop til you get there.
