    Hello I just recently got into my high school bass line and I’ve never played bass before what do you think is a good way for a beginner to learn splits in fast exercises

      This is probably kinda late, but i learned just by doing it a lot. I play 4thand had singles during our feature with 5th, so we always just played the singles whenever/wherever we could. Eventually, I got super consistent, even though I couldn't hit it at all at first.

    what if the split is a metric modulation? I tagged you in a video I posted on instagram yesterday. is it fine I could get tips/advice on it? but anyways great video

      and I ask about the metric modulation because of stick heights

    • @johnathanwhite4878
      @johnathanwhite4878 6 років тому

      Use a Met and break it down. See which parts of the bar are not metric modulations and practice those parts with a check pattern. Repeat for each modulation then put it together. Check stick heights when doing the check and apply them to the full modulation

    When I try to play the upbeats on the split singles, I tend to start out on the correct rhythm, but subconsciously go back to the downbeat. For example, if I'm playing 32nds, I would start out on player 2s part, but morph back into normal 16th notes with the metronome. I don't know how to fix this. I've gone super slow, but no matter what, it's like I've been programmed to play on the metronome clicks no matter what.

    "Attack first upbeat with a relaxed approach" 6:51. If you want to take your players to the next level, you need to define those upbeats as well instead of just throwing them in, relaxed or not. Watch a top level line play a simple 8's split and just focus on those upstrokes. They are going to be as evenly spaced and defined as the notes themselves, with the mallets coming out an 8th note before their actual note. If your kids have the ability to do things like that, these kinds of splits basically play themselves.

    Why do marching bands bother playing split singles? Is it just a fancy/impressive display of skill? Or does it sound distinct to the audience verse a single stroke roll?
