Another great video. A update on my 1976 25hp Johnson. I finally got it running yesterday Thanks to you and your videos. This was my first project like this. Thanks again
@Derrick Smiley I use marine batteries from Walmart. I don't use just deep cycle batteries because I use them as start battery too. If I was just going to run my electronics and trolling motor only. I would buy deep cycle. I can buy a new one every year or two and it will last the season. PS I always have at least two batteries on the boat.
Very nice. I started with the first video and have now watched the whole series of videos on this rebuild. Awesome job and as someone else mentioned you always have a positive attitude. I have a 1986 15hp evinrude. I gave 100 bucks for it and it was locked up. I got it free and compression is 85 on one cylinder and 90 on the other. I'm considering rebuilding it soon. Your videos will be of much help.

Next time! I had a person come up to me when I was getting ready to run the motor and made me a offer to buy it. I could not say no. It was a done deal.
I have a 1974 Evinrude 15 HP very similar to this one and it has not been started in over 12 years. I might restore it or just sell it , but I want to get it checked out first.
Do you have any tips on replacing a broken steering swivel on one of the 15’s. I’m trying to find info on the net, but I’m not seeing anything and I’m not sure where to start. Thank you. Love the videos!
I want to rebuild a old out board to see if it would last as long as new one when I am done. If the out board performs like it did when it was new. If I get a thousand hours out of it. That would make it worth my time. I have always been told that a outboard is only good for a thousand hours. That is way a inboard is so much better. Captains that I know that run out boards use both of them to get off shore and only use one the rest of the day. Then the next day use the other one. This way the get twice the time out of them.
I didn't know that about outboard's life span....I would guess that it depends on it always having the correct oil/gas mix, a good working water pump, and of course salt water vs. fresh water. With all the work you have put into that 15, I think it would outlast a new one hands down. Back then, those motors were made to last. I have a 1961 Johnson 10hp on a little 14' aluminum V-bottom here that runs great. The fellow I bought it from just did the regular things to it over the years, and she does love her 16:1 oil mix:) Cant wait to see your vid of that 15 running on a boat :)
Sure hope you put sealer/grease on those screws....Was the water tube grommet OK? I'm sorry you pulled that driveshaft out of the white gearcase, now you have to mess with getting those shift detent balls back in place. How the heck did the prop shaft seals get like that? Sounds real nice buddy, can't wait to see her on a boat purring away...
I did use sealer on those screws, I have had to many problems when others didn't. The water tube grommet looked very good. I made sure I was easy when handling the exhaust tube and water tube. I have no idea how the seal got like that in the lower unit. The bearing look good. I have went this far I was ok with the prop shaft pulling out. I did not try to stop it. I did fine both of the detent balls and the spring. The way the rest of the build went I wanted to be sure the lower unit was ok too. I was pleasantly surprised when it started and sounded so good. Next I am going to put it on the boat and take it to the lake.
Cool! Like I said, the original style upper water tube grommets were best, so I'm glad you left it in place....The replacement grommets get crushed in salt water... I can't remember just how those detent balls get reinstalled, perhaps it is not as difficult as the ones used on the 30-35 models....Can't wait to see this beauty on the lake!
Hey I’m rebuilding a 9.9 right now and these videos are extremely helpful! Can you tell me what your compressions were after your rebuild? I want to know what my goal will be.
Thanks for asking. I am fine. I am getting a few outboards together to go through and I will show every step of the way. Stay well my friend. and God Bless!!
Be for you order a new one I would disconnect the linkage at the engine and turn the throttle. I had one that was real stiff. It was the plate under the flywheel. I cleaned that up and end of problem.

Hi I have a 1989 evinrude 9.9 , that wasn’t running for 25 yrs plus. Found impeller completely broken up, replaced. Motor runs but it’s exhausting a milky oily substance? Any idea what that is? I replaced the seals on the lower unit. It seems to come from the motor area down the exhaust to the prop area.
Wondering if you can tell me where you order parts from. I was considering buying a 1975 johnson 6hp outboard. But looking around online . No one seems to carry parts for this one. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for the cool videos on this video.
On the front of my John Deere 485 it has a reciever that will except a 1"x1" square hitch. It is the same size as my Ford Explorer. It just slides in and you put the pin through it. It was on the mower when I bought it. I think yours should have it.
I need help with a 1992 15hp Johnson.....It will start but it won't stay running....can you possibly give me any advice????? I also have a 1966 6hp Evinrude.....changed the water pump...tested it and it works great but when I put the lower unit back together it won't pump any water out the pee hole....have used compressed air to blow everything out and still nothing....I really could use some help....getting so frustrated with both motors......thanks
On the 15 hp it is possible that the ignition coil is getting hot and breaking down. You did not say how long it runs before it quits. Most of the time it is in the carburetor or the linkage settings. That is what I would check first. On the 6hp I would check the upper water tube grommet make sure that the tube is in it and there is a good seal. You probably already change the lower grommet with the impeller assembly kit. I assume you made sure the gear case works so you know the drive shaft is turning. Hope this helps. Thanks for commenting and watching.
I was going to just follow the manufactures break in procedure for a new engine. After the rings seat I will run a compression test. I will post a the information on the next video.
@@LivetofishOutboardRepair I always run them about two hours. Just take it easy most of the time about half throttle fist hour and the second hour short times of full throttle.
On the Johnson 9.9 and the 15 they use a lot of the same parts. I think that is just good business. I know of lots of companies that do the same thing. I did not change it.
How do you get that water tube to get in that small hole. I can’t see anything. Does it help to have lower unit off? I got mine back together and wasn’t pumping water up that tube.
It is a lot easier to connect the tube to the bottom of the motor when installing the lower unit. Trying to set the engine on top the tube and line up everything else would be a job. Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay Healthy!!!

Hey I was just curious when you started this motor the compression test you did was at 60 and 70. Which you said was bad. What is an OK compression for that motor? I am curious cause I was looking at buying a 15hp johnson in the 70s. It has compression of 70 and 75 other cylinder. But it won't stay running

I have a 15R77M Johnson motor that I purchased a year ago that's been giving me a hard time, it won't idle. Ive been watching alot of your videos for pointers. Do you sell your outboards somewhere after you fix them?

It happens when lower unit is disconnected. Just the little seal/guide on the bottom causes the motor to basically lock up if I torque it to spec... I have no idea why.. I have two lower seal/guides that ive tried and they both lock it up. Is there some-sort of spacer or something that im missing? Thanks

When you say gets really tight. Does this happen when the lower unit is installed or when the unit is off. If the lower unit turns free when off I would check the drive shaft pin not seating properly if when on.
It happens when lower unit is disconnected. Just the little seal/guide on the bottom causes the motor to basically lock up if I torque it to spec... I have no idea why.. I have two lower seal/guides that ive tried and they both lock it up. Is there some-sort of spacer or something that im missing?
Thanks

I’m needing a bit of help. How can I contact you
Did you do a compression test on this engine??
I did a compression test after it was put back together. It was about 100 on each cylinder. I was disappointed. I thought it would be around 120. I will check after I run it for a while. I will let you know if it comes up.
@@OmFishing 100 before break in is GOOD I would say. I restore and repair vintage outboards...seen lots of them run PERFECT at 85. Thanks for the great video and your response.

Be sure to let me know on you tube that you emailed me. Sometimes I get a lot of them and I can't read all of them.
I have watched and subscribed to your channel ever since i got my first boat back in the fall of 2018. Your videos were (and are) a huge help for me to get my 1965 Evinrude 6hp running and I thank you for that.
I featured your channel in my latest video that I put up today. It's a video about what I did right and wrong with my old boat trailer - but I have a section of the video about your channel. I try to feature another UA-camr that I like in each of my videos now.
The video I just put up is here: ua-cam.com/video/Omqfydl1Qqw/v-deo.html
I hope you don't mind :- )
