- a friend went on a pick for some old volkswagens on a property that was getting cleaned up. this boat was for free as it was pretty rough. lets see what we can do with the 60s evinrude fastwin outboard that was on it.

I admire your tenacity pulling that rope - I would have gone to the drill long before...
Those are my favorite outboards. That one is a 1969 Evinrude Fastwin 18hp assuming the cover is original. That motor is probably still viable as a regular runner. All the bearings in the lower unit are plane bearings. Even seized up like that, the parts can be cleaned up, the seals replaced, refill with gear oil and it will keep on giving. 👍
I agree. All parts are still available often on eBay. Worth it to revive.
Yea looks to be a 60's engine, almost looks same as the Johnson seahorse 10hp (1961) I have in my garage
Definitely worth saving. Motors like that around here go for 500-900 and it looks to maybe have less than 100$ worth of parts it needs
I think she could be brought back also guys
I have a 62 lark iv manual shift that still runs great. It is a fantastic motor and I love how quiet it is when running.
I bought a 33hp Ski Twin (same vintage, mid 60s) the cover looks the same. Guy wanted $100. He said he took it fishing with his daughter and after half an hour of no nibbles, they decided to come back in and it wouldn't shift into gear. After fiddling with it for a few minutes, they managed to get it into reverse, so they went back to the launch that way. After I got it home, I took the bottom end apart, I found the pivot pin for the shift fork wore thru. $12 part thru BRP. Works like a champ! So much power!
Used parts are pretty easy to come by. You shouldn't have a problem rebuilding the bottom end or finding another recoil
Is no one going to talk about those side burns?! What a stud!
I am amazed at the amount of 'free' stuff you have fall into your lap! Maybe I need to move to New Hampshire.
Now that Evinrude has quit making outboards, that may be a priceless piece of history.
I remove all the screws except the last one which resists... then I have to dismantle another section but there too the last screw resists... or destroys the thread or breaks... the same purgatory on both sides of the Atlantic. But with Mustie we are sure to have a Happy End ! When I'm at the bottom of the pit I think of him and his spirit gives me the inspiration to continue.
Respect, Mustie !
THAT fire was awesome!!!!!! Evi Lives!!!!!!!! Mustie you gotta follow it up....Awesome Job.
I love how excited you still get when you bring an engine back to life, I'm glad it makes you happy, makes me happy also.
I can see a part 2 already, but leave it to musti to find a gorgeous peice of history
@Craig G would love to see that
@Craig G I was just thinking that. Maybe weld that bottom pinion gear to the bike sprocket or something. Be interesting to see an engine on the back of a steampunk bike because it'd be totally unique.

I can not believe you got that running! Hope there is a follow up. Your determination is inspiring!
Always enjoy your nautical repairs, keep up the good work, greeting from the Netherlands
It's always a thrill to hear Mustie1 laugh when it starts, lol.
Aye, a smile appears whenever I hear a Mustie snort, chortle, or giggle. A laugh and I laugh along with him.
Better cackle thant. DR. EVIIL!!!!!!!
its also a thrill when he sees an engine will spin 27:05
The laugh of success is my favorite part of these videos . I need to find something to do that will give me a laugh too . Board with retirement .
I love it when he says (you know what comes next)
"OK so i've been out in salt water, better flush the motor......ah maybe tomorrow....?"
30 years later...on Mustie's youtube channel.....
She sure had a lot of beach in her.
Songs comes to mind here
"You shake my nerves and you rattle my brain
Too much love drives a man insane
You broke my will, but what a thrill
Goodness gracious, great balls of fire"
Keep the fire coming Mustie1, you deserve it after that work out.
Damn it man ,,, TOP GUN AND MUSTIE 1 all in one !!!! It’s a great Day, ain’t it !!!!!
Mustie you are just as cool 😎 as Tom Cruise !!!!
Tenacity, persistence, and Trust in one's own abilities .... mustie, I hope you have children and were able to pass on some of your skills. I have a 1964 .....9 1/2 horsepower Johnson outboard. It was the same model as my fathers. When I found one locally I had great fun getting the thing to run. Now it starts second pull every single time. Never dies and nobody wants to steal it because it is so old. I once used this Boat and Motor to tug my younger brother with his one year old 60 horsepower Mercury that had a failed fuel pump. I really really really hope that you put the time into this rebuild. This is a great video!
Reminds me of a classified ad:

David Burton, almost fell off my chair laughing. That’s a good one.
thats a classic
so funny:)
That joke is older than a Martin 45 outboard.
I’ll need a part 2, with transom replacement and boat work, immediately if not sooner please and thank you.
chrispy
Hey ! someone else who knows what the flat section that makes up the stern is called 👍🏼
Pretty sure everyone knows what a transom is I may be wrong tho

lots of boat repair vids. only one musti
His giggling never gets old. Love the joy he finds in doing this stuff.
Mustie, I have been around many of those exact outboard engines years ago, about 30 years ago. I can't tell you how many times I have yelled at the screen trying to help you! Hahaha😆 But hey, it's trial and error right? That's how we all learn. 1 thing to remember about most outboards is that the aluminum crimp tag on the plug wire is the top cylinder. They are pretty simple once you get familiar. That lower unit is in bad condition. I have never seen one that bad before. You may actually be able to salvage most of the contents with thorough washing and wire wheel. Thick gear oil takes up a lot of play... Just saying. Tig weld or braise the pull start with it on the engine and it should be great. Those carbs are pretty simple as well. Love your videos! Liked, and subscribed!

Hi there,I've just bought a 1972 johnson 20hp model no 20R72R or £50 locally and can't get it to idle,I've stripped and cleaned the carbs and reset the air screw to 1.5 turns out and it cuts out on low revs but will rev high and pumps plenty water and selects gears etc, it just won't idle or cuts out on lower revs. Has anyone any ideas?
Stuart mays, most of the older outboards are 2½ turns to be a baseline start. Should idle much better without coughing. But high speed will be compromised. The screw leans out the burn and gives more power and rpm. However, backing it out should make it idle smoother, until it becomes too rich, which will indeed stall out the engine
@@zackhamilton7421 Thanks mate, should I set the screw to 2.5 turns and leave it there? I read online it was 1.5 but there's a lot of conflicting comments so I've been going round in circles with it all day.
Stuartmays, the older outboards were a little different. Unlike a 4 stroke Briggs and Stratton or equivalent, an old 2 stroke outboard carb usually will idle better around 2 turns out. If it won't idle after this, then perhaps check the emulsion tube from the bowl up to the throat of the carb. Also verify that you don't have a vacuum leak around carb base. If that still doesn't pan out, your top crank seal under the flywheel is probably dry rotted and needs replaced. That seal is high on top and prolonged storage drys it out and will suck air from under the flywheel... causing a lean burn. Which typically will idle but only on 1 cylinder. The idle circuit should be checked as well in the carb and make sure that there are no obstructions. I hope this helps you...
Aw two videos this week Awsome! The first boat motor video you’ve done in a while loved it . Thank you sir for the great videos!!

Mustie your joy of “fixing” things is why others like us do what we do. Just knowing you can transform something worthless into something useful is very rewarding. I get the same kind of excitement you did in this video when I fix things. And that feeling bonds all “fixers”.
A moment of nature at the end was a nice touch but.......the dedication to your craft is second to none Mustie1.
I've seen several of your videos in the last 2-3 months but this was one of the most stubborn motors you succeeded at starting, nice work! And you still did it with humor - Thanks!!
Come on Mustie, bring her back. She deserves it, she still runs after sitting 20 years!!!
I agree, go all the way with it. You can do it.
He will, he's caving already. When he hears it run, his previous plan to part or scrap something wafts away in a cloud of blue smoke.
That's an outboard MOTOR not a SHE.. maybe he but most likeley IT

Olf american motors, build for last. I have a 1981 johnson and i wont change it for nothing.
In the past 3 years, I don't think I've fixed a motor without consulting Mustie first. He is the piston whisperer.
I remember a guy pulling an old boat with an ancient 'brown' Johnson motor on it. The name of the boat was "Any Minute Now". That put a smile on my face.
havent been watching youtube for the last year or so missed ole musties videos relaxing to watch a guy tinker on things that knows his stuff.
Always enjoy hearing that Mustie laugh when an engine starts.
absolutely correct 🤣😎🤣
The harder he works the bigger his laugh lol
Especially when the engine shoots flames out the bottom!
That was one man's pride and joy at one time. So good to see it cough back to life. 18 HP twin cylinder that's hot!

There is nothing like a surprise Mid-week Mustie1 posting. A big thanks from a new Canadian subscriber for providing a few moments of sanity and escape from these difficult times we are all experiencing. Can't wait for Sunday morning sir.
Perfect timing. I just finished fixing up a 1963 Evinrude 18hp Fastwin, which looks almost identical to this one.
I got it for free. For about $50 in parts and a few hours of my time, I’ve got an awesome running motor.
I know a Mike Naples from Wachusett Regional & woodlands fitness , what are the chances as i was just cruising youtube for old evinrudes ,,, i also own a 50 yr old evinrude that still runs ...
This is such a classic Mustie1 video. It incorporates multiple challenges to be overcome set in a field of corrosion, crud and cobwebs. Having flames shooting out the bottom of the lower unit followed by Darren's eruption of laughter took the story to the next level. Thanks for taking us along on the adventure!
Its a blast watching you get things running Darren just to her you laugh and giggle with joy when you bring a motor back to life.
You probably never expected such a reaction: From the ball peen hammer to the wrenching, twisting, clanging disassembly, culminating in blasts of fire out the poop shoot, I laughed, I cried, sides aching; breathless. The most tragically entertaining 48 minutes in quite some time.
"My plan is to keep hitting it ... until it finally falls apart." - Mustie1
Love this channel!!!
And if that don't work, use a bigger hammer!!
You can tell his hammers are his favorite tool... Everything gets 15 raps, soft hammers all cracked, hes on a panel hammer cause his peens are probably shot lol. And that Impact driver...its mushroomed and missing a BIG chip...
Once again: "I-Have-Made-Fire!"
Love those old Evinrude and Johnson outboards
God bless
Paul (in MA)
Amazing, after 20 years the old outboard fired off and ran. I had one just like it many years ago old Evinrude 18 horsepower. Those old motors were pretty much bulletproof, wish I had kept mine..Good show Mustie 1, thanks..
Can’t believe you got that thing running. I think even more impressive is the fact the rope was still in great shape and didn’t break.
These motors were built by people who thought they should run and last forever. They're kind of a pain to disassemble and service, but given that parts are readily available, and they were overdesigned, there's no reason this one won't come right back. You can probably find a lower end cheap on ebay. Thanks again for the involving amusement, Mustie.
Personally I would have loved to see you get the one in the garage running! .... THAT WAS ONE WICKED AWESOME CAR!
Nothing can beat that mustie chuckle (it's alive) 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just love how at the end of your videos your sharing the beauty of were you live with us
At the start of the video, i was wishing for a tour of the lady's yard. Specifically the cars there.
Great end. Very peaceful.
Darn it's never good when your'e bound up down below, Mustie. Love your work bro. Stay safe and cheers
Man, that thing fought you every step of the way. Glad you got her fired up in the end.
Seeing you beating frantically on this flimsy engine represents what we all come to sometimes. I just shake my head and tell my self : "what the hell am I even doing" while keeping the pounding until it works, something break or whack my hand. You are a mad scientist sir!
Me: Fire shoots out the bottom, walks away from it muttering, hell no
Mustie1: Hahaha, let's add more fuel and give it some more
My outworn is leaking gas wen l plug in to Moter right at the Kennedy
I love will it run.... especially when you get to the Mustie1 laugh.
Your having way to much fun ! Thanks for the laughs... It is fun getting stuff to work and run ... especially when they've been idle for years .... Good video ... lifted my spirit!
The reason it was so cranky about coming apart is the splined coupler at the base of the power head is seized to the drive shaft. This is a well known issue with older salt water OMCs. From what I have seen, what you did is about the best recourse when you end up with a stuck drive shaft.
Awesome video as always Mustie.
This guy is a "primitive pete"....no clue .... lets force everything....ooohhh I have a bigger hammer.
He couldn't make a pimple on a mechanics ass
@@robertrosenberg6354 Robert, you must not have watched many of Mustie's videos, he usually does a fantastic job on his projects. I kind of get the impression that he didn't expect much from this old outboard so he didn't put too much effort into it.
That is exactly what the case is. I just threw one in a dumpster for that very reason.
good thing about those old OMC engines, is that they revved so low that they were almost impossible to beat up.
5500 rpm is low?
@@alnbaba Yes, it's nothing for modern 2 strokes to exceed 10k rpms
I own 2 strokes as well..not a boat motor tho, but it will turn 20 thousand rpm no load and the clutch engages around 8 thousand rpms..if ya wanna get crazy? I have nitro engines that turn 40 thousand rpms..the piston is a 1/2inch bore and the stroke is 3/4inch..then there are model turbine engines that turn at 150 thousand rpms..🙂👍👌
Lee Harris yeah, you’re talking about hobby grade motors, same idea, but nothing the same as the full scale due to small size, smaller it is, the faster it can rotate.... but yeah, valid point.
@@leeharris3061 I am pretty sure that they aren't talking about model boat engines or airplane engines like the K&B or SuperTiger rear rotor

1969 Fastwin was always a good motor. It has some value as is and with a little $$ will be a solid runner again. Great job with the teardown, nice fight, and of course victory at the end.
I'm assuming the year based on the cover (cowl) being original. Great to see another old piece saved from the scrap pile. The flame scene was epic! 5 stars.

Darren, I believe that’s a 60’s Evenrude engine. The 18 would have been one of the big boys! Haven’t seen one of those in 40 years. Good job getting it to start.
