I was there that day and 16 years old at the time. My grandpa took me to the track all the time. Having gone to the World Series, NBA finals, Stanley Cup finals, I have never EVER felt excitement at a sporting event like I did this day as Alysheba and Ferdinand made the turn for the home stretch. A million thanks for posting this!!!
1986 through 1988 I recorded every Santa Anita and Hollywood Park replay Show on Channel 33 in Los Angeles I know most these Trevor Denman calls by heart
The next race is even better!"The two former Derby winners ,both carrying 127, and their gonna go nose and nose for the wire"..Or the Strub; "And here comes the Superstar! Another one of my favorites is a horse called Akinamod; "Akinamod, she's just having fun out here! She just took a look at the flag man! She's having so much fun"! And of course Winning Colors in the Santa Anita Derby " Stevens to the whip left handed, just one crack though! It's Winning Colors! And she'll carry the hopes of California all the way to Kentucky! And oh what a winner that was!" It was great when they had those replay shows, and that one with Bob Baedeker on!..♥️🙏👉🇺🇸
Yeah absolutely I still trip out about the 12: one shot call good taste allowance horse that came out of nowhere and almost beat both of them that was in the San Bernardino handicap!!! Can alysheba give this9 lb to candies gold they both tough but alyshebas shibas class is now pulling in through and here comes a superstar alysheba so impressive as he wins the Stroop Stakes"" under Chris McCarron by about 3 in the end
@@cheacosta809 Yeah, I was actually gonna quote the part we he said"can he give up this 9 pounds" but I was going a little long.Trever was so aware! In another post I said watch the next race to see how much difference 1 lb. Makes! That's why horses such as Round Table and Dr. Fager, were truly great! RT carried as much as 146 I believe. If they ran today, they might beat them all. Alysheba was much improved at 4, even though he should have won the triple crown at 3.. Nice to talk horses with you, have a good day..♥️🙏👉🇺🇸
Jack Van Berg said it best....he told McCarron before the Belmont to relax, this horse can gallop faster than they can run. Jack said Chris looked at him like he was crazy. Jack said Chris didn't yet have the confidence in Alysheba. He later would gain it. After Alysheba broke the track record (race I can't remember) Chris came back to Jack and said...you're right Jack, he can gallop faster than other horses can run! Jack told Chris you're a year late and $5 million short!!
@joefederico I was lucky enough to be at the track that day, and you may not remember, but back then the exactas in southern California were $5, so the $18 exacta works out to $7.20 for each $2. I didn't have it though, I picked "The Judge," thought he would get an easy lead. Definitely a classic race though.

Also in 1988 Winning Colors won the Derby, and in 89' the rivalry between Easy goer and Sunday Silence! My friend first took me to the track in 86, how could I not get hooked for life! Especially considering I was on the right end, ( betting Alot for me) of all of those, except for Sunday Silences 1st 2 triple crown victories. ( But I think it was more satisfying cheering Easy Goers romp in the Belmont home! What a time to be a fan!! P.S. I like your horse racing facts posts...
When 2 Kentucky Derby winners are entered in a race, nobody cares about wagering....2 great athletes racing is what they wanted to see! And the horses delivered!
This is purely a comment from a betting view although this race is a classic in my opinion as well. 4 horses, no show wagering and the favorite and 2nd favorite finish 1-2 and the exacta returns, to me, a whooping $18. That is like robbing a bank.
Champions/Multi G1 winners/and classic winners like Giant's Causway, Sakhee, Captain Steve, Fusaichi Pegasus, Galileo, Aptitude, Black Minnaloushe Lemon Drop Kid, Albert the Great, Macho Uno, Cat Thief, Golden Missle, Include, Orientate. What a classless bunch of champions and G1 winners.
Well said TampaSlice.... Alysheba and His worthy adversary... What happened to Ferdinand in his retirement is a tragic disgrace!! Shame on the disgusting greed demonstrated by Ferdinand' post racing owners.... Those disgusting and greedy people make me sick!! R.I.P Champ's
Race was really never in doubt! They passed the mile in 1:34 2/5 ! That's smokin,'!. Watch the next race and see how much difference 1 lb. Makes going a distance of ground!♥️🙏👉🇺🇸
alysheba had so much heart!!!! to me he sunday silence and cigar are the best horses since i started watching the sport 25 years ago.. by the way with polytrack and steroids, i no longer follow the sport...i used to love horseracing..
Tiznow got a 116 Beyer for his 2000 BC Classic win, the highest fig of all the 2000 Breeders Cup races(Kona Gold got a 114). So, clearly Beyer thought there was a different variant for 2-turn route races compared to 1-turn sprints. Tiznow got a 117 for his 2001 BC Classic win, a 117 for his 2001 Santa Anita Handicap, and a 119 for his 2000 Goodwood when outduelling Captain Steve. All those races except the Goodwood came at 10 furlongs.
2:00 3/5 at Churchill Downs is in the top 10 fastest times at that distance for that track. The fact that you're comparing a 6 furlong sprint to 1 1/4 is ridiculous.
is called track variant for the same day..how beyers are figured as well.. they almost never run 10 panels at churchill other then the derby (which is very young 3 year oldd...who can improve 1-2 seconds as they mature at 10 panels.. give it up dude, u are arguing with the srong guy here about these things..
@Tampaslice i love alysheba, but easy now....outclassed ferdinand? he was better then him yea but didnt outclass him... and chris mc carron was 1 of if not the greatest jockeys of all time.. alysheba wasnt winning the belmont no matter what, it wasnt his day..
both his bc wins were desperate in slow times 2:00 3/5 on very fast tracks kona gold won the sprint in 107 3/5.. was tiznow a claimer no..was he great no..

It's an awesome ground shaking thunder of fun .
I was there as well, what a moment in time. It's now 2024, it still gives me chills watching this, especially Trevor Denman in his prime!

Yea Trevor is definitely the Vin scully of horse racing!!!!!!!!@
Great race. Alysheba v. Ferdinand, always a classic!
One of the best ever. Also sunday silence vs easy goer.

He faced many top notch horses in his BCC races.
this may be my favorite race of all time, get goosbmps watchin it...

It seems nowadays not only do top horses avoid each other until the Breeder's Cup it's even more rare to see a Derby winner run past the TC races.
alysheba had so much heart!!!!

ride Chris , ride, tremendous rider when it was in front.

Beyer figures are worthless. Beyer refused to enter any handicapping contest or give an one-track demonstration of their value in handicapping races.
Fixed to the tee,Did you see both horses in front, Sacrificing themselves.
Two push button Champs.

@jhordanian i think tiznow just found a few week years/field to win his back to back bc classics..not a great horse at all IMO
They could have gone around the track again and Ferdinand wouldn't have got past Alysheba
nope...he didnt
is called track variant for the same day..how beyers are figured as well..

and chris mc carron was 1 of if not the greatest jockeys of all time..
alysheba wasnt winning the belmont no matter what, it wasnt his day..
no big time horses, they run so many g1s...
both his bc wins were desperate in slow times 2:00 3/5 on very fast tracks kona gold won the sprint in 107 3/5..
was tiznow a claimer no..was he great no..
And a turf sprinter( Honest lady) would have run him down in 2 more jumps!
