This to me was "Race of the Decade" for the 1980's. There was a massive controversy on Lasix at that time and it was banned in New York. Alysheba, in this case racing WITHOUT LASIX set a then-track record of 1:59 2/5 in winning this Woodward handing the deepest field of males that year their heads on a silver platter. That's why to me that was "Race of the Decade."

Thank you for posting this video some believe that was Alysheba's best race ever because of the quality in that field plus he proved he can win without lasix and that he can handle Belmont

Alysheba was always one of my favorites horses. After the races that day when the crowd was leaving I ran into Jack Van Berg and I told him how much I loved his horse. He then proceeded to give me a big hug and thanked me. And that is one of my favorite moments in racing!!

Alysheba was the best looking colt I have ever seen. He would kick up his heels in the walking ring at Santa Anita. I remember Alysheba and Ferdinand battles and those prior to that like Alysheba vs. Bet Twice. Funny how those slow developing two and three year olds suddenly blossom into monsters.

I don't necessarily want to put blame on Julie Krone for her breeders cup classic ride, but Pincay seemed to match the horse best of the riders he had and I thought it was a big mistake on Seth Hancock's part to fire him for refusing to cross the NY jockey's picket line for the NYRA Mile. At this point, Alysheba was in peak form and likely unbeatable by any horse in training, but I thought Forty Niner was a very close second.
