Beautiful piece of riding that day by Seamie Heffernan. Highland Reel broke from the widest post position. Heffernan did a great job hurrying him out of the gate and rushing him forward to the lead. At the time, there wasn't a better middle distance turf horse racing anywhere that was better at making his own running on the front end than Highland Reel. So when Heffernan rocked the field to sleep with a 48 flat opening half-mile, and then got away with opening up 8 lengths on the field behind a 1:36:16 opening mile, race was over. Flintshire or Found couldn't have run down Highland Reel in that last half-mile if they'd taken a cab.
