I have been waiting for this video for a long long long time. This was so fun watching. I love watching the progress! Great job can’t wait to see it finished. But I bet you would like to see it finished more than anybody.
Great video, well done, I love sips. Was wondering your opinion on sip strength when you don't compress the foam between the two layers of plywood with many pounds of even pressure after glueing.like they do in commercial construction. How is your great tiny house standing up with out the post glueing pressure?
Thanks! I’m sure that way is stronger but this worked out great for me, it’s been solid so far. Cruised just fine on the freeway and it’s been over a year since gluing the sips. We’ll see how it keeps up 😀
that's pretty awesome. I see you trim the foam with an iron. The corners of the iron are rounded, i imagined this leave fillets on the foam, does it? And if so, is that a problem when mating the panel with a timber or another panel (would leave a gap)> thanks.
Thanks! I’m not sure exactly what you mean, but I used a hot knife with an adapter on it to cut out a channel for the ripped down 2x4s go into they fit great. I did squirt Great Stuff into the channel before placing it in and that filled any gaps that there could have been. Hope this helped!
Sometimes if you go back and forth it makes a filet but if you had to go back and forth the you just make sure to grab out that thin filet before gluing in the wood. 👍🏽
Haha I’ll see what I can do! If I do them again I’ll make a video, but not sure if I’ll do them again… it worked out good but it did take longer than I was hoping. Good luck if you try it out or if you just buy sips and put them up yourself! I’m happy to answer any questions if I know the answer if you have any in the process! 😎
Hello Jordan and Lei, what a nice video and job, well done. Imagine, you do the job again, would you use the same technic to make your SIPS panels please? Did you press them? Regards. Willy
Hey Willy, we didn’t press them more than just putting some weight on the right after sticking them. I would do it again with SIPS, however I’d like to try the 78 adhesive with some great stuff as well. And I would probably just do it in 4x8 panels with the foam recessed 3/4” on each side so that you can tie the sheets together with a 2x4 in between. It worked out this way but I think I’d try that next time. 👍🏽
Hey man! Thanks for wondering! The progress is going, it’s taking me forever and we haven’t posted in a while. But we just moved into the tiny home one Saturday and we’ve got a few more things to do to finish it up completely. I hope the final video will be up in the next month or so! As far as cost breakdown, it varies a lot because of the price fluctuations but the plywood on the inside was about $50/sheet and the exterior siding board was about the same. I used foam from another job but if you were to just buy it pre-slabbed then it’d probably be around $75 per 3” sheet. Depends on the foam place close to where you are. I purchase a big adhesive canister for $1,300 and then used a bunch of cans of great stuff. So a rough estimate I would say for all the floor, walls, and ceiling (basically the structure) it would be around $8,000-$10,000 or so for the size I built… however you can try to reuse materials for find stuff on Facebook marketplace and stuff to keep the budget down. Hope this helped. I would also probably want to keep experimenting to see what kind of adhesive I’d want to use if I did build it this way again. I think it’ll work fine but there’s always better ways out there!
As a mater of interest. OSB 3 12 mm thickness = 7.211 €/m². Insulation PIR 140 mm = 30.9 €/m². PIR 150 mm has the same insulation value of 200 mm EPS. Making you own SIPS, it will save you a LOT of money. Jordan and Lei, please go on in the same way.
No worries! I used a foam fast 74 from 3M but I think I actually like the 78 better. I also used the original red can of great stuff, which is super good for glueing any foam it just gets expense for big things. I am trying lots of things but I think they best is the spray glue and then add some globs of the great stuff. Hope that helps!
I didn’t get an exact quote to order sips, but it’d probably be about $25/sq ft at least. That’d be about $15,000 for just the sips. To buy all the materials to build your own like I did would be about $6,000 +\- and then your labor costs. However I used a finish plywood on the interior so no need to drywall, and a siding board on the exterior so savings there as well. Hope that helps!
Wow! 😮
Thanks!

Thanks! Haha yeah, it’ll be fun to see the finished product when I’m all done!

how i wish you did a tutorial video, on how to make the SIPs. can we have an additional video. on SIPs DIY Please

And thanks! The tiny house is almost done now, we’re excited to share how it was all finished soon!
How is the progress? Any chance you can give a breakdown of panel costs?

Yeah, I think we definitely saved some money and time by using the EPS. Thanks!
Not sure where you get your numbers from. EPS has roughly 60% insulation of PIR. So 140mm Pir should be roughly 250mm of EPS. Almost double.
Wat its the glue? Sory for bad english.

@@kananilife thanks
How much do you think you saved creating your own sips instead of buying them?
