- The discussion highlights several unique cultivars of Acer palmatum (Japanese maple), focusing on their distinct characteristics, origins, and growing habits. Here's a summary of the key points covered:
1. Acer palmatum 'Ryusen':
- This cultivar is a weeping selection that cascades down like a fountain.
- It has a large palmate leaf typical of upright Japanese maples but in an extremely weeping form.
- Originated from Kobayashi Nursery in Japan, known for its vigorous growth and ability to handle sun exposure well, even in warmer climates like Zone 8b.
2. Acer palmatum 'Rakuzan Shidari':
- Another weeping variety from Japan, notable for its large, almost Amoenum-style leaves.
- Has a unique yellow fall color, making it distinct from other weeping maples.
- This cultivar was spotted at a temple by Yataka Tanaka and propagated after the original tree was lost in a tsunami.
3. Acer palmatum 'Fountain of Youth':
- This cultivar is characterized by its heavily cascading habit with elongated, hand-like foliage.
- Initially, the leaves emerge with a salmon-pink hue, turning green in summer and transitioning to bold oranges and reds in fall.
4. Acer palmatum 'Looking Glass Falls':
- Named after a local waterfall in Western North Carolina, this variety features a weeping habit with light lavender-purple borders on its foliage in early spring.
- Changes in spring conditions can affect the intensity of this coloration.
- It combines the cascading habit of weeping maples with unique foliage coloration.
5. Acer palmatum 'Nakakomodo Weeping':
- Considered a national treasure in Japan, this cultivar is over 400 years old and known for its majestic presence.
- Has distinctive arching branches and a cascading umbrella shape when staked properly.
- It features green palmate leaves and is a symbol of longevity and resilience.
Each cultivar discussed offers unique aesthetic and cultural significance, from their origins and growth habits to their specific leaf shapes and fall colors. The discussion also emphasized the personal experiences and stories associated with these trees, highlighting their role as both ornamental plants and cultural symbols in Japanese gardening traditions.

Great video guys! I got a Hoshi Zora from you a couple years ago and have been training it into an upright "S". I love that tree, and you don't seem to offer it very often. Keep up the good work. I dig Mr Maple!

Just admire your informative videos. Please keep doing this. So far I have purchased Orangeola, Waterfall, Emerald Lace, Twombley's Red Sentinal, Red Dragon, Lemon Lime Lace, Viridis, Mikawa Yatsubusa, Crimson Queen, Dragon Tears, Golden Falls, Little Joe, Bonsai Baby, Lily Pad, Ryusen, Pink Princess and Tattoo. You keep offering 'em and I will keep adding. You at Mr. Maple have made me a collector. I am a Master Gardner with a terrace garden here in New York City. Thank you for your videos.
Thank you putting together these videos, I love learning about the different maples /trees! I have a few trees from you and have my eye on a few more. I love trolling your website and learning about them but I do have one suggestion for your website, would it be possible to add a search category for heat loving trees? I live in Dallas TX 7b and not all trees suited for 7b are suited for Texas. I hear you mention some that can take the heat But I am having a hard time finding them on your site. Thank you again, looking forward to more videos!!
I DIG MRMAPLE!!!
Man I missed out on dragon master during BF sale. Will keep an eye out
One of the bright spots of an otherwise terrible year of “COVID 2020” was getting from your nursery, what sounds to be one of the largest Nakakamado Treasures you guys have offered to this point - a tremendous FIVE gallon specimen. Going on 14 months in the ground now here in Rowan County North Carolina and growing and doing well. Loving the more frequent videos as well. Especially during the winter months since I really don’t need to go out and tend to the 50 plus maples in my collection on my property. The few rare ones I’ve gotten from you guys really stand out.
Wow great show guys! The trees plus the history behind them are just the bees knees! Now Bryan mentioned his tree looked like a beautiful skirt so..... Next fall while your trees are at full color Bryan needs to sport a SKIRT made out of JP leaves????? please lol
