How To Stake A Japanese Maple - JAPANESE MAPLES

  • In today's video, we discuss the best practices for staking Japanese maples, recommending early spring as the ideal time due to the sap-filled, flexible foliage. The video covers various staking tools, from professional nursery guns to simple bamboo canes and twist ties. Staking can help shape the tree and accelerate its growth, particularly for lace leaf varieties or those aiming for a taller form. While staking is not always necessary, it can enhance the tree's appearance and growth rate. The video also emphasizes checking stakes regularly to avoid damage and notes that staked trees should be monitored until their summer growth hardens. Additionally, Japanese maples, like Acer palmatum 'Chika' or 'Bloodgood', can benefit from staking to achieve desired shapes, though their natural, less symmetrical forms are also valued. The guide encourages flexibility and creativity in staking to suit personal garden aesthetics.

    Velcro bands are great for this. Cut to size and won’t cut into trunk in windy areas. You can get it for less than $5 at big box stores.

    A specific use case for staking that just came up for me was planting a 1 Gallon XL Sango Kaku that I got from MrMaple. It was a great size (around 5 ft tall) with great foliage which I think makes it an incredible value but but being a novice gardener I didnt account for how top heavy it was with the entire rootball being the size of the 1 gallon pot. The first night I planted it a storm came and blew it over so the next day I staked it up and now it looks pretty solid. Thanks for all the super informative videos MrMaple and team!

    Thanks for the video. I have a question regarding lace leaf. My plant is from the nursery about 2 months in the ground with an upright stake. Someone told me I have to remove that and do 45 degree angles so as to strengthen the stem otherwise it will not be able to support the branches above

    Will an Orangeola Japanese maple slowly mound up over the years and get taller or do they need staking to increase the height of the tree? They seem to have very pendulus branches.

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  2 роки тому +1

      They will be faster with staking but they will mound up slower if unstaked

    Can you show us how they give the S shape or twists in the leader please? Would love a gift card!

    • @TheCattwooduk
      @TheCattwooduk 2 роки тому +3

      Stake a leader up but leave some length at the end to hang down naturally. That leader will become lignified enough to hold that position mostly unsupported, probably by the end of the second flush of growth towards the end of fall. If not keep it staked until the following spring. When the next new flush of growth starts, move the stake over and then stake up the next length up in a different position. That is how I do it anyway, hopefully that makes sense?!

    Great timing on this video, as I just purchased my first maples from you, and this will be my first time growing maples! How would staking be different when the tree is on a high graft? The root stock is already hardened while the scion is still flexible. I'm hesitant to manipulate the stock plant too much. Thanks!

    How deep in the pot would you put the stake? Down to the bottom? Would the stake damage the roots of the maple?

    • @TheCattwooduk
      @TheCattwooduk 2 роки тому +1

      I go all the way to the bottom, one bamboo cane isn't going to damage enough roots to an extent to really hurt the plant. Also this time of year root growth is fast so it will replace the few roots you cut through.

    I'm looking how to stake a larger Japanese Maple.When it rains in the valley, the maples leaves and branches almost touch the ground.I would rather have my tree supported than broken.What do I do?

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  6 місяців тому

      Stake now in spring while they are flexible. I’ve use a metal tent frame before for a very long stake. Use the same method if it’s bendable

    Just got a Ryusen from you guys that is a great size. Is like to stake it like the 2nd example on this video but the leader is already hardened off in a weeping form half way up. Since it’s still young it is pliable so I can stake It without breaking it. My question is - will this section eventually harden in the vertical form or will it revert back to arching once I remove the stake?

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  Рік тому

      They are more flexible in spring but you can also just take a small branch up and it will continue

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  Рік тому

      Once it’s hardened off it’s fine to remove the stake
