  • Here is my first attempt at videoing the pruning of a Purple Ghost Japanese maple. It's not easy trying to do two tasks at one time but I will figure it out since I want my videos to be live with no editing.

    Brilliant you are adding this to your videos. I have been pruning mine the last two seasons but I got a lot to learn. I have a Orange Dream that is especially difficult as I had to got it back dramatically as it was sick when I got it and this year it put on so much growth I have a hard time deciding what to do but I think I will go for more narrow and vertical growth like.

    When are we getting a spring update? Spring is slowly getting started in Denmark but will be a while before the acers and conifers really start to show life.

      It is still cold and dark, the maples are kind of boring at this time.

    Quick question, what would be the minimum size a container grown maple needs to be before transplanting into the ground? Or would this not be an issue providing good drainage is added to ground?

    • @amazingmaples
      @amazingmaples  2 роки тому

      Size doesn't matter but maples tend to be lazy growers and it takes manipulation to get them to grow to a fair height. Drainage and watering are very important to the heath of a maple

    i think the japanese call that style of pruning, "hotdawg," whereas the lateral pruning is called, "hamburger." i dont know how to pronounce either..but that's how it's written. also, you're blowing up that bunny's hiding spot! chubby bunny gonna be shark food! jah!

      My goal is not to prune to the shape of a "meatball" or a "refrigerator", hamburgers or hotdogs are OK

    I'm always afraid of pruning before winter as I heard that wounds do not heal well anymore.
    And isn't it double work as you will get more or at least additional dieback by frost?

    • @amazingmaples
      @amazingmaples  2 роки тому

      I have never had problems from pruning in the winter time here. As for frost damage, I fin that to occur in late fall or early spring when there is growth on a branch when there is freezing weather.. Thanks for watching and please subscribe.

    If there is horizontal growth in only one direction, should you take them out? I was wondering because a tree might be trying to get more light.

    • @amazingmaples
      @amazingmaples  2 роки тому

      Depends on if you want growth in that location. If there is only horizontal growth and I cut it back to a node that has the potential to grow vertical unless i only want horizontal. Note that most all horizontal growth end up growing downwards.

    Question, what do you recommend to treat pseudomonas on a Japanese Maple? Thankyou

    • @amazingmaples
      @amazingmaples  2 роки тому

      throw that tree away and get a new one or pot is up to keep it away from other trees since the damage can spread.

    Nice to see a pruning video , is this the best time to prune maples ?

    • @amazingmaples
      @amazingmaples  2 роки тому +2

      From late fall to early spring is a good time to do pruning of larger branches but I also prune smaller new growth as the new growth comes out in spring and the second flush in summer.
