  • Acer palmatum 'Ryusen' is a distinctive weeping Japanese maple known for its cascading habit, unlike the typical lace-leaf varieties. It begins with bright chartreuse green foliage in spring, transitioning to light green in summer, and then showcasing shades of orange to red in fall. This variety is versatile in shape, often staked up to six feet to accentuate its cascading form, resembling a fountain-like flow down hills or banks. 'Ryusen' is highly adaptable, thriving in zones 5 to 9 and tolerant of high heat and full sun conditions. It's prized for its unique texture, durability, and the creative ways it can be trained and shaped in gardens, making it a standout choice for focal points or container gardens.

    We found this one at a local nursery right after buying our home. We brought it home and planted it near our front walkway. We love it, and I enjoyed seeing how people train their trees! I dig mr maple.

    Maybe a coral bark shishigashira. The tiger tail maple. I know its hard to get perfect crosses but if you put the two varieties in a closed area while they are both flowering couldn't you get a baby with both traits. I just dont have enough varieties to try yet. Still start every seed i find though. Some die but I've seen some pretty seedlings.

    Hi… Just finished a backyard makeover with a Ryusen included. I am in love with it and looking forward to seeing it in the fall. Do you have some advice you could share about trimming it? I’m wondering if it’s ok for it to stay touching/ flowing on the ground or should I keep it pruned up a little to keep it safe from disease/ pests? Thank you.

    @MrMapleShow I'm looking for a bright strong, clean, red Japanese maple that doesn't turn purple or flesh coloured. Could you recommend one? It doesn't have to be red all year.

    Love this tree! We currently have Japanese maples and are drowning in the amount of helicopter seeds they put out. How much of an issue is that with this tree? I'd love to get this tree but I can't keep up with the amount of seeds I'm getting from my other maples.

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  2 роки тому

      Seeds can be determined by the year and conditions. Typically only mature Japanese maples seed. They typically are not much ab issue even on older trees

    Hey you guys, how long does it take to grow them that tall?

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  3 роки тому

      These typically get about as tall as they are staked. The one in the video is about 10 years

  • @steviek121
    @steviek121 4 роки тому

    Any tips on how to stake these trees for height?

    • @ichoudhury007
      @ichoudhury007 4 роки тому +2

      Just make one of the branch that is weeping down, start staking it upward (you can even twirl it around the stake to add character. Have patience with it and overtime, that branch will thicken up for you to not have to depend on that stake. You may chose to trim all the other weeping growth as you make one into a leader, and concentrate on upward growth (which is what I did with great success). I like the idea of taking it 6-8 feet higher and then let the tree do its thing (which it will start to weep downward).

      I live in Central Indiana and mine scorches in full sun. It may be because it’s still in a pot that it doesn’t like full sun though. I did a twisting form like a previous poster mentioned and it looks awesome.

    !! > !! Got one of these that I have been staking up, I want to get it pretty tall and have it cascade down so I have also been considering hanging it upside down off the deck. Got to figure out my long term plan while it is still young.
