Thanks for covering this. NOW is indeed a great time for synth guitars for sure. I just recently purchased a Roland GR700 with the GR707 guitar and its quite nice. I've always loved pad sounds behind the instrument.

One great additional feature of the Roland GR systems was Hex Fuzz: a fuzz circuit for each string. It’s all over Nick Kershaw’s “Wouldn’t It Be Good?”, for example. Robert Fripp got some great synth out of the GR-300 e.g. “Sartori In Tangier”.

Love my GR55. Pipe organ, piano, harp, gregorian chanting, etc. Still feels like I've barely scratched the surface of its abilties even after a few years and a bunch of custom FX.

Recommend the Digitech Talker if you're exploring talkboxes. It's what Daft Punk used on most their 'Human after all' album. It was meant for guitar but you can use a synth as a carrier wave to get those classic Daft Punk Robot & Vocoder sounds. Sounds so much better then whats out on the market for digital talkboxes.

if you're low on cash but own an iphone, there are interesting "synth pedal" apps too. roxsyn is basically a huge audio playground (although technically not exactly a synthesizer. but who cares, you can get fun, synth-like sounds out of it. arpeggiator, envelopes, all the fun stuff is there). on the other hand an app like midi guitar 2, as the name suggests, allows you to translate whatever you play on guitar into midi notes, opening up the entire world of iOS synthesizers...

@@akrmfk but be aware that mobile fx are an absolute rabbit hole and you might not be able to justify buying hardware pedals any more ;) and regarding actual synth pedals, if you can solder a little bit you can buy solder kits with all the parts plus a pcb and a metal case for way cheaper than big brand pedals. I just built myself a "resonant filter" pedal for 30-40€ and not only was that really hard to even find in a pedal otherwise, it was also a lot of fun building it. I've seen solder kits for guitar synth pedals for similar prices too. alternatively, i feel like the combination of a chinese fuzz and envelope filter pedal from ebay, maybe 15-20€ each, might also give you some possibly gnarly but synth-like sounds...
