How to Use Guitar Pedals for Synth
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 чер 2024
- Hey, y’all. Nick here. I know that Josh normally does these episodes, but I got to the pedal shop today and Josh asked me to step in instead. He had some sort of secret spy mission he was late for? I didn't get all the details.
So we did an episode about using guitar pedals on synthesizers. You're welcome.

The Tame Impala vibes are through the roof
Nah. Needs a LOT more flanger for that.
As if tame impala where the original creators of all thier sounds
@@digitalsea9147 At least two of these tracks are directly inspired by Tame Impala
Octahive + Pitch Fork track was fantastic
Definitely.
Indeed
i have gone back to listen to that some many times
i impulse bought an octohive almost immediately after seeing this video and watching some demo videos online. this channel is dangerous
Josh writes exactly how he speaks
One the most underrated pedals in the history of synth is the JHS Lucky Cat. Especially on drum machines. I don’t recall a single demo utilizing one. It absolutely slaps. Cleanest, most articulate repeats I have heard. Thank you for reading my comment.
Always love the guitar vids, but PLEASE do more synth vids!!
Yes!
I concurr!
I have bern waiting for a jhs video like this for some time. The presenter opened my imagination with some cool colours and evocative textures in the performances, but I would also like to have heard some old school blues rock shredding, or even a melodic monophonic line too. FWIW, I was using a RAT pedal, a flanger pedal and a Space Echo on an Oberheim in the mid 1980s and that is still an important aspect of what a synth can do.
Yes! More synth action please
Please more keyboard stuff
Your Father (josh) must be so proud
Duuuudes! This is sick! Thanks for including one of our bees! ❤️ At our studio we use the octahive on synths all the time as well! Its always killer! 🤘❤️🤘
❤️❤️❤️
i impulse bought an octohive after watching this, this channel is dangerous
defo the standout piece for me
This was hands down the best one of the whole video
It's a multi-effects, but lots of synth players love the Zoom MS-70.
Absolutely...........a great pedal for synths
If you can only use one pedal, that is the one,
most likely.
Great for guitars and synths! and anything else too!
Nothing wrong with a good multi-effects! I have the Zoom MS-50g and I use it all the time for reverb, delay, modulation, noise reduction, and occasionally overdrive/DS
Same here, brother.👍 I love that pedal for all it does.🎹🎧💫😵 Plus stereo ins and outs!😎👌
I put off watching this one due to lack of interest, but finally watched it this am while having my coffee. Turns out it’s my fav Nick episode! Now I need a synthesizer...
That is some epic work with the Pitch Fork. You continue to amaze, Nick.
more synth related episodes!!!!!!!!!! this was just incredible! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Thats probably one of the coolest uses of a pitchfork ive ever seen tbh
The "he's got the box" song shoulda been changed to "he's not my dad" for this video😂
He needed to pull out a giant box and say it was for the Korg.
iwonder if there will be a star wars-esque episode where josh finally admits the truth
the coolest thing i’ve found with the rubberneck is you can turn the tiny regen knob really low, then crank the gain/feedback knobs so that it’s always oscillating, then hold the bypass switch real quick whenever it gets so crazy you need to reset it. You can even have it in tails/buffered bypass mode so you get an insane pad going, turn the pedal off, and play over it without it delaying your current signal. So sad to see DOD go under not long after they put out some of the best stuff they’ve ever done.
Always great stuff! The “riff” at 4:48 has many characteristics and reminds me of Tame Impala’s “Let It Be”, which is awesome!
it's Let it Happen. I think Nick lifts a lot of stuff from Tame Impala, actually. in a good way :)
@@NorigoPT definitely a good thing! 👍
This turned into one of my favorite channels. Not even looking for a new pedal or anything.
The track with the emperor felt so organic and alive and sorrowful and amazing.
Great job Nick! There are so many great pedals for synths. Please please do more episodes like this. I feel like you’re barely scratching the surface.
Great video. Nick you seem to like Tame Impala and synths, would love to see an episode about synth pedals (such as the Boss SY-1) for guitar/bass, and how to stack them with the likes of delay, fuzz etc!
Your voice inflections are pretty darn close to Josh's too it's an easy transition between the two.
I was thinking the same
Well it does make sense. Keep in mind Josh is his dad.
The riff with the Octa-Fuzz & Pitchfork was 💯👌
That octahive and pitchfork sound AMAZING. Love how you were activating the pitchfork with your palm.
This is cool and all, but are you sure your Dad’s okay with you taking over his UA-cam channel like that?
Like what? This boi just has the same dry balls to the walls humor as the old guy
I don't play guitar and I've been waiting for you guys to do this.
I hope you guys make this a more regular thing for us Synthheads and Keyboard Players, we're addicted to pedals too!
Great job Brother.
Blurry flute + Emperor = Blade Runner soundtrack. Also, that’s some legit shoegaze/dreampop synth at the end. Nice work, Nick!
That is so true. I knew I recognized that sound.
Just tried similar yesterday. Great to see rotary was your first go to as well! Thanks for the great and different episode Nick!
Well done. I really enjoyed this episode. Using things in a way they were not designed is how creativity is born.
Most pedal for synth videos tend to go for the approach of: lets open the windows and make beautiful sounds. I'd like to see something involving a chain of pedals from distortion and fuzz to chorus to flanger to delay to reverb. Take a droning sound out of a synth and obsoletely destroy it. The one thing you played that caught my attention was the Dweller, but even then I want to hear it along with 3 other pedals for complete noise destruction. Just a suggestion. ;)
I don’t usually do this but I genuinely think you may enjoy certain aspects of my music. I absolutely loooooove destroying audio. Feel free to check it out :)
Always good to see Nick out front giving it the beans on keys. Great episode gentlefolk.
I’ve been waiting for this. Hooray!
And Nick carries the video! Ah yeah! Nice work.
Daaaaamn, that Beetronics and EHX joint venture there was so legit!
Once again a stellar job from Nick. Love the music. I can’t pick a favourite between Josh and Nick - but I prefer shows with them both!
Where’s the bass pedals episode????
LOL. JHS doesn't care about bass. They assured us that their 3 Series pedals were good on bass too. They did a video of the 3 series thru bass and pretty much all of them sucked out the low end except maybe the chorus and the compressor. If you're a bassist, this channel will only scratch your pedal nerd itch. But you'll have to search for bass content elsewhere 🤷🏿♂️
I came down to the comments to ask this exact question. They've done pedals on drums and pedals on synths before even thinking about pedals on bass. I am disappointed.
Check out Janek Gwizdala's pedal studio series. It was inspired by this chanel, but for bass.
I think Josh had a girl leave him for a bass player or something. JHS is clearly anti-bass as much as they are anti-phaser. I'm steadily losing my interest in this channel.
Was posted on here 2 weeks ago.
Wonderful job Nick!
Just bought a Mel 9.
Freaky great!!!
I love every sound you've done on this video. I could use all of them on the album I'm working on. Thanks man, beautiful!!!
Nick and the JHS gang. I'm going through the back catalog of vids and super glad you did this with a synth. Now I want that synth😂😎
Great video. Enjoyed hearing to different pedals and you used the first synth I ever bought. Seriously underrated instrument. I just recieved a nemesis delay in the mail today and am really looking forward to trying it out.
When I saw no guitars I hit dislike, but I watched the show because I love you guys, and by the end switched to it to like.
Love your show, JHS crew!
Good stuff. More episodes like this with synths and even modular in the future please.
Dixon and Stein and SURVIVE are great!
Great episode Nick. Well done!
Good job Nick! Synth and distortion is certainly a delicious sound.
Zoom MS-70CDR is in every synth nerd’s gig bag.
It sounds so good 😭😭😭
the NTS-1 has even better effects imo. as well as a synth
I just use my MS-50G
i have two 😎
@@richardsgonzalez8204 you can upgrade the ms-50G/MS-70 to have every single effect on the ms pedal range - look up a video called "better gear - zoom multi fx pedal hack"
That fuzz combo was AWESOME!
I’ve been waiting for this episode!!
I have the Emperor V2 and I LOVE running synths and keys through it, lots of warm and vintage tones in there
Awesome episode!
Great episode I started a band almost 15 years ago with a friend that had an Access Virus and a Nord Lead, and it didn't take long for us to wonder what the hell it would sound like to run his synths through my pedalboard (particularly my fuzz pedals), and it was a goldmine of new sounds for our tracks.
Excellent timing, I've been looking for a video on exactly this topic. Cheers!
It depends so much on the synth and the sound you're using. My to-go pedal is (and will always be) the Strymon Big Sky.. for 303-ish stuff i use a Fender Distortion or Metal Zone. For old analogue stuff (Stringers) i use the classic EHX Small Stone phaser pedals. You should make a video about how to correctly connect guitar pedals with synths as not every pedal can handle the signals coming from a synth... i once fried my Boss VB-2 while connecting to an old toy organ keyboard.
You’re a talented musician Mr. Nick!!
Love this! It would be nice to get info on controlling output/input levels when using guitar pedals with synths,
Some cool sounds! Cheers Nick!!
Great episode - nice one Nick
This episodes sounds amazing. 💯🔥💛🙂
Love the sound of a good synth. Really tasteful melodies
I wanted all the songs to keep going on much longer than they did. Really nice, fresh stuff here
Exceptional episode as always, the emperor was actually pretty damn cool in this environment; loved it.
Ha, Nick is awesome! Great video, gave me a lot of ideas, thanks.
I just bought an RV-6, and I love it. What really sold it for me was the expression pedal function. I especially use it with the shimmer setting, and swell the shimmer in after playing a chord or note. I also use it doubled or even tripled with my RE-201 Space Echo and the digital reverb on my Blackstar tube amp. Everything I own eventually winds up going through the Space Echo, especially synths.
Absolutely loved this, more please!
The Emperor and EQD Av Run are my go to synth pedals. I almost don’t feel comfortable without them. LOOOOVE this episode!
Killer tonez Nick
great demo !!
Nice video! Guitar and synth players unite to nerd out on pedals. Love it
Wanted this episode for a while, noice.
Cool sounds dude!
Not a synth player at all but I enjoyed this episode immensely. Great humor, great pedals, and great sounds!
Been waiting fir this one!!
can we just pause at 0:02 and appreciate this beautiful mega shelf of cool stuff???
Thanks, nice to see the synth guys and gals getting some love.
Could I suggest using guitar pedals in a DJ setup? Could include some advise with any impedance issues or signal flow with a mixer and fx loop.
Cheers 👍
You did a great job sir!
Great topic! Muchas gracias.
Back around 81, we used a flanger pedal on a cheapo mono synth (GEM) and it came out great in the (cheap) studio.
Now i want an episode about Distortion, Fuzz, Filter and Flanger pedals used with Roland TR-808 drum machine.
My fave is the MXR Phase 100. Total Gary Newman “Cars” and some old New Order stuff. Killer.
It's a shame we didn't get to see Josh's keyboard chops but Nick always brings it when he has to pick up the slack.
Beetronics! What a sound! The pitch shifting really made that tone though 👌
fun video, always wondered how to connect pedals to synths
That riff with the pitchfork was dope
Just a tip: use the volume knob to adjust the level of compression/waveform distortion when using pedals! Using fuzz pedals will get you some crazy results, especially when you choke out a gatey fuzz box like the fuzz factory!
Cool! I misunderstood this to be about guitar synth pedals, happy about this.
I really love running stereo on my MM-4/DL-4/FM-4. Also nice that it offers stereo IN and OUT in case you have a stereo source.
That pitchfork hand heel hack tho!
The DOD Rubberneck is the best! I love mine so much. After watching this inspirational video, I'm probably going to be up all night playing my keyboard through it.
More of this please 😁👍
Thanks for giving us synth heads some love.
I've been waiting for this video thanks nick u r a cool person. I also want to see one video about pedals for vocals
Great show!!!!
Layering reverb is a great sound... I’ll use my amp’s spring tank with an EQD Ghost Echo in front of it.
Before I had to sell my synth gear 😢 I had an Alesis ModFX Bitrman on top of my poly800. For a while I had the ModFX Smashup (Compressor) paired with it. These things weren’t really pedals since the bypass was a button right under the knobs, always fun going to stomp on it and you knock all your settings around. They were more a tabletop effects box. Thanks to multi pin connectors on the sides of the box, you could connect a bunch of them together without needing patch cables, and apparently they did sell a rack unit that could hold 3 of them connected together vertically for studio use (though it looks like it ate up a ton of rack space.)
I love doing that ...I’ve been putting pedals on my keyboards
Since the late 70’s... and even on my piano thru a microphone thru pedals into the recorder
Great job man, I'm shure your dad Josh is proud
Great sounds
Man's a wizard. Love love loooove! The dweller is on my list nowwww 😫
Chill Penguin, Nick! It sounds great.
Thumbs up for a unique episode here. I'd love to see something on Oto's effects with synth and guitar (Biscuit, Bim, Bam and Boum).
Great video!
Thanks for the synth pedals post! A relatively rare type of video content on UA-cam... more please.... 🤙🏻🎹🎛
Dope, I've already got a Prologue and an MM4.
I live 10 minutes from star court mall, so season 3 is best.
S3 is the best.
i went through there a year ago with some friends and i was so surprised to see it near empty!
