- How do you start a Jeep Wrangler without a key? Welp, I had to figure it out. The mechanics of the key cylinder went bad. I either need to replace the gear and rack or .. just maybe try putting an S10 column in. So, I straight-wired my Jeep for the time bypassing needing a key. Anyway .. hope this helps you if you want to do this conversion

Question... In one of your other videos you stated that you didn't really need the starter relay because it didn't pull enough amperage to call for one. I have a 1990 YJ 4.2L. Do you think the draw is about the same as your 4.0 and that I could bypass the starter relay and just go straight to the the solenoid?

So I just came across your video and I know it is a year old but can those gears be replaced/are repair parts available or does the column have to be replaced
They can be replaced. I didn't have the parts on hand. Nor I wasnt really worried about it being factory. It is a driver / work horse / toy for me so I'm not really worried about. I might do it right one day to make the video but it will not be anytime soon.
I am probably going to show real ignorance in my question...but here it goes. Why did you use a relay to arm the ignition system? Why not just have the simple on/off toggle switch you used and connect that to the permanent on 12v supply and then to the two ignition/radio wires?
You are absolutely correct, you can set it up as you mentioned. But, only if you are using a higher amperage rating toggle switch. I am using a "mini-toggle" which is only rated for a few amps. So I used the mini-toggle to trigger the relay allowing the relay to carry the load of the ignition. If I had used a regular toggle switch rated for say 20 amps or higher, I would not have used a relay. Good question 👍
First I would like to personally thank you for this video. It was very helpful because I'm experiencing the exact same issue with my 92 Jeep Wrangler YJ however I tried exactly what you did in your video but it didn't start. None of my dash lights like the door chime check engine light ect. will come on. The fuel pump relay didn't come on. So I verified the 12v at the red wire put both jumpers in on the yellow and purple as you stated it turns over but has no fire. From what I can tell now the ignition coil is not getting power. I have removed and cleaned every ground wire associated with the ignition. I have replaced the battery and checked every fuse I could find on the Jeep. I don't know the YJ came with a clutch safety switch but I don't have to push the clutch in for it to turn over? Not sure what's going on here? Any help would be greatly appreciated sir.
Great video. When laying under the dash I like to make it easier by removing the drivers seat. Maybe just because I am 6-2”.

YJs had 3 different wiring harness that the color codes changed. So there would no way to post the wiring schematics to help everyone. I demonstrated in the video how its done.
After doing this bypass my heater and ac don't work... If I wiggle my key just right in the ignition they will kick in though. Any thoughts on how I can get them to work without messing with the gears in the steering column?
I doubt it it is the gears. More times than not it is the electrical part of the ignition switch. Or tweak that rod that goes down to the electrical switch, do it gently so not to damage anything.
Awesome videos, always informative and interesting. After viewing tho I do have a question.... "IF" I wanted to continue to use the key to put power to the starter bus (as an on/off switch) and then use a "push button" momentary switch between the RED wire and the GREEN wire won't that allow me to start without involving that upper gear/plunger rod that is the trouble part? I realize it doesn't make it keyless but it allows me to bypass the trouble piece and still lets me use the key as my safety on/off switch...
I have a xj. My question if I just jump wires to the new switch and start button I'm just using the stock relays and fuses correct?
Did you come up with a way to fix it permanently with the key?
Like this is good for me to rig it to run again so I can move it but I still want to fix it correctly

Wow mines fucked it’s litterly hot wired and I got no power to gauges or relays

I have the field service manual in PDF form. You can do a Google search to find a copy.
My lights come one but I turn the key and nothing happens no fuel pump and no starter engaging
Hi there I enjoy watching your videos. I have a 1994 Sahara that needs a lot of attention. I am getting ready to work on it starting by trying to get to run. I was wondering which repair manual are you using. I can see some on the web for sale but I am not sure they are going to be detailed enough especially on the wiring side.
