  • Need a new GFCI Plug? Check description below!
This is intended to be a very basic troubleshooting guide to help you figure out why your Ryobi electric pressure washer is not turning on when you pull the trigger. I am by no means an expert but this should help you through the basics. Please use common sense when messing with mains power. If you are not comfortable with it, then don't do it.

I found something that might help others. I have the Ryobi 1400 Pressure Washer. I was getting a light at the GFCI but not at the washer.
I opened up the GFCI plug and the wires in the plug had round caps covering the ends of the braided power lines. I clipped those caps off, made new ends for the load and neutral. Once I was done, I tightened each wire into its respective place in the GFCI plug. It all works again 100%.
Thank you for this video and shared knowledge in the comments.

I was just about to post this question, I'll open mine up and check this first - light on gfci, not on washer, sounds the same. I didn't see any caps, unless they are under the other cover I can't remove. But there are ig tails that go into some terminals, I confirmed that connection but then took voltmeter and got no power there, when plugged in, henci I think the GCBI is bad.

I just fixed my Ryobi 2000 after watching this video and reading the comments. My problem was the GFI hot wire came loose. I removed the 4 small phillips screw on the gfi plug. See 3 wires black white green. The neutral and ground was already tight but the black wire needed almost a full turn to stop tight. I had a 1700 awhile back that had this problem. If I knew I could have fixed it, but I also want a stronger one.

Thank you for sharing this troubleshooting video. As soon as I watched it, I plugged my Ryobi into the outlet and saw that the light was glowing on the plug but the light on the switch was not. I disconnected the Ryobi plug and used a grounded plug to replace it. When I plugged it in, the light on the switch immediately glowed green. I hooked the waterline to the pressure washer and it worked perfectly. I will get a replacement plug now that I know that was the problem.

After verifying that gfci plug was good per video, I took the green cover off with the thought of verifying power was getting to the motor. Before getting out the multimeter I gave the motor a spin - fan is located on opposite end of motor from pump - to make sure it wasn’t seized up and it seemed to be fine. Got ready with the multimeter and plugged gfci into outlet and pushed "on" button and it worked! I think maybe I dislodged something sucked into the motor when I spun the fan. Thought I’d pass this along before somebody throws their machine away based on video alone.

I found a lady online who was selling hers for $20 because of the same reason, ranting how much this thing is junk. When I brought it home I troubleshot and realized that a small piece of debris was clogging the nozzle head. If she had switched heads or popped this tiny thing out with a small nail the failsafe wouldn’t be activated to stop the machine and she wouldn’t have lost money. Hope this helps someone before they decide to take this whole thing apart.

I’m wanting to replace the plug on this same model. I can’t find the 2 wire color code anywhere! My plug has been replaced so the black hot wire goes to silver and the white neutral wire goes to gold. This seems backwards to me? Can you verify this anyone? Maybe someone has already commented about this, but just in case. I had both green lights on and the power appearing not to come on. Right after I plugged it in, it made a quick sound when I turned on the power, then went silent. I kept turning the power on and off, and it was still silent, so I thought it was busted. However, for some reason, I decided to go back through the set-up steps. including unplugging and re-plugging it in. I then learned that the motor is silent until the spray is activated. When I pulled the trigger on the spray wand, the motor came on.

We received a Ryobi Pressure Washer for Christmas 2018. We have the receipt from Home Depot. We used it for the first time today and after 30 minutes, it just stopped working. The green light is on at the power source, the green light is also on at the motor. There is no pressure coming thru the nozzle, just a small stream of water. But everything is quiet. No sound. Any suggestions? Hate to have to bring a unit for repair when this is the first time we used it. Set it up after Christmas to use this summer and threw the box away.

Mostly the problem is with the cheap gfci. If it has a green light and wont do a test and clicks when pressing reset its toast. They don't want anybody getting in them. Takes a security bit. Once inside the components are cheap as can be. A replacement 15amp at your local big box hardware sore will suffice if you're in a hurry.

I would verify that the gfci plug is working or not. I would remove the screws on the plug and remove the small plastic cover revealing the wires. Then plug that gfci plug into a extension cord, have your volt meter handy. Then plug the extension cord into an outlet. Then carefully verify that you get 110v. If not, your gfci plug even though it lights up green might be shot. It’s a quick check before you throw out the machine. :). Good luck and be careful

This Ryobi pressure washer electric 2000psi has been a problem every year. First year I had to replace the hose, 2nd year, all the lights are green but the motor won't stay on. I will never buy a Ryobi product again. They don't build to last.

Just a heads up, mine had a green light on the plug and no green light on the machine. Replaced the cfgi plug and now it’s good to go. Read a lot of people on other videos that this was their solution too

It could be some sort of a fault. Swapping it out would probably be best as it may be staring to fail.
