Mike D remembered how the group played around with an 808 drum machine during the Ill sessions and Adam Yauch asked what the tracks would sound like if the beats were played backwards. "Run from Run-D.M.C. was there, and he was like, ’Man, this is crazy.’ But Yauch recorded this beat, bounced it to another tape, flipped it around - this is pre-digital sampling - and bounced it back to the multi-track tape,” he said. “The reversed beat basically became ’Paul Revere.’ Yauch saw this thing we couldn't see - and he killed it.”

Did anyone else say Hold it now, Hold it now in their head at the end of Paul revere? Hold it now transitioned so quick after Paul revere on the album that your mind always goes right into it. This album was my youth, blasting the tape loud, walking down the street with the boom box on my shoulder
Fun fact. LL Cool J’s career was started with the help of Ad-Rock from Beastie Boys. He not only played a song to Rick Rubin, but he also helped produce “I Need a Beat.” That’s how far back Beastie Boys goes. Nearly 40 years.

Awesome! This video got me to subscribe. Glad I found you guys. The Beastie Boys released albums from 1986 - 2011. Their albums went platinum, double platinum, triple platinum, and even diamond. They have so many great songs, and influenced hip hop in a big way. Looking forward to more!

I can't believe this song is thirty five years old! Hip hop has come a long way since the eighties and the Beasties have produced some great stuff throughout their career.

Run DMC and Beastie Boys were also both produced by Rick Rubin who is a five-star producer. He produced Audioslave he produced Michael Jackson Black Sabbath the list goes on
Why has no one mentioned this song played on 24" woofers. Houses/apartments (in my case barracks) would shake and rattle. When played in a car, windows vibrated hard.
Beastie Boys definitely worth digging into. Paul's Boutique is one of the greatest hip hop album of all time (this isn't off Paul's Boutique). But these guys were just a punk rock band that played instruments and picked up rap in New York because hip hop and punk rock music weren't all that different at the time. They were both with the counter culture.
I don't get the Paul's Boutique love. That album was awful. I got when it first came out, listened to it once and that was it. Check Your Head was their defining album.
Check out their earliest stuff no one talks about. “She’s On It” and Then the classics, “Rhymin and Stealing” “No Sleep Til Brooklyn” “you gotta fight for your rights”
I've loved the Beastie Boys not long after this album first came out in 1986. They've evolved through so many genres, from their Punk roots, to rock and rap, hip hop, jazz, funk and dance. They've certainly stood the test of time. RIP MCA.
Arguably, the Beastie Boys are the very 1st and Orginal Rap band...true trend setters. World class lyrics and innovators of sound. The Beasties are Badass.
1986 they were opening act for the Raising Hell Tour with LL, Whodini and Run DMC. Paul Revere was already hitting and it was same time that Licensed To Ill was released
Daryl Macdaniels, AKA DMC from RUN DMC wrote the lyrics for this song. It was originally a Run DMC song, but when RUN heard that beat, he put 2 and 2 together.. The rest is legendary gold.
“If my rap’s soup, my beats is stock” Beasties had the best beats in the business. Their sample game was next level. Anything off Paul’s Boutique is a prime example of this. But, Intergalactic is, in my opinion, one of their best.

Beastie boys are truly hip hop legends .. back in the early 80s together with RUN DMC ( raising hell album ) . Bboys walking with boomboxes - yes yes ya’ll
Beastie boys, Run, etc they were together.. let’s not forget the first timers from 1980, Sugar Hill Gang, rappers delight. They were the original start for everyone!

This backward beat was originally a mistake they made when they put the drum tape in backwards. It sounded so cool, they decided to keep it.
This was 1986. The Beastie Boys never stopped rapping until MCA died. But they did start playing their own music as well. They were originally a punk band long before they were signed. There is an entire CD called The In Sound from Way Out which is all the instrumental songs and interludes from their 3rd-6th albums. They brought the punk bank fir the immortal Sabotage. (The video is a must see.) This was produced by the legendary Rick Rubin who co-created Def Jam and produced Run-DMC and LL Cool J and thrash Metal band Slayer. Decades later he produced Johnny Cash's final set of fantastic albums. He produced Jay-Z's 99 Problems. This first album is a bit different from all that followed. It was the first rap album to chart at #1. They then briefly were Madonna's opening act.
Damn you took me back to junior high school and the summer of 86. When I first heard this song at my best friends house. Oh the memories thank you guys for this one.

That drum machine was a Roland TR-808. The beat was actually used on T La Rock's It's Yours in 1984. Then in 1986, they played it in reverse on Paul Revere. Both records were produced by Rick Rubin under the Def Jam label. If you haven't heard T La Rock, check him out.
Because the Beastie Boys career spans so long, I find that you have people like myself who like early Beastie Boys and then you have people who like later Beastie Boys. This record was released in 1986, a month after I turned 16 (what a great time) and it was a game changer. I recommend the song "The New Style" off of this record. And "Shake Your Rump" off of their next one, Paul's Boutique. You only need to listen to a handful of their songs just see how they revolutionize sampling in hip hop. They brought sampling to a whole new level.
The Beastie Boys catalog is the biggest rabbit hole in hip hop. From these early roots to greatness. Every album different and inventive. Lots of groovy instrumental songs, with them playing instruments. One of the Godfathes, and the GOATES of hip hop.
That beat you are talking about is a reverse 808. The TR-808 drum machine was a big deal to hip hop beats back then. Then along comes the Beasties and they decided to reverse the beat and what they ended up with is this song, and a place in revolutionary history. The Beasties were way ahead of their time and definitely one of the most influential and revolutionary hip hop groups of all time
First and only rap concert I've been to was Beastie Boys. They played on a rotating/circular stage at the center of the arena. Biz Markie opened for them, it was at the Meadowlands!
Every kid that's never heard of a group says ,'wow , i never heard of these guys , they're underrated '. Imagine - the Beastie Boys underrated . Mercy.
This beat was a standard early 80,s hip hop beat put in reverse with scratches added. This was 1986......The maracas Asia was hearing were the reversed hi hats mixed from left to right.
Beastie Boys started as a punk band in the late 70's. Eventually they met Rick Rubin, and Russell Simmons who started a label called Def Jam records. Russell Simmons brother is Joseph Simmons, who is Reverend Run from RUN-DMC, who have a co-writer credit for this song.
Back when this song came out I had converted the backseat of my 1979 Nova Into a huge subwoofer speaker box! I nearly broke out windows everywhere I went. this is the best song to show off That bass!
You gotta do more Beastie Boys. Sure Shot, Shake Your Rump, Check It Out (live David Letterman version), Root Down, and Non Stop Disco Power Pack are all a must.
This was a lot of fun to watch. Great commentary from both of you. Yeah Beastie Boys have always been there since the RUN DMC days but you forget until you hear one of their songs. They never tried to fit in and just always did their own thing.
I went to city schools in pittsburgh. This was 2nd grade for me. We used to see who could go back and forth with some run dmc and then this song came out in 1985. We had a blast! MCA is gone, but not forgotten. He used to run actual audio tape around mic stands and move them to slow down and speed up the beats from led zeppelin, ac/dc, etc., because they didnt have what we do now. He was a genius music lover and I miss the boys terribly because they were so different. They started as a punk band and "License to Ill" was kind of a joke because they were imitating run dmc, but "Paul Revere" and "Fight for Your Right" caught fire. They changed things up every album and I loved it! You wanna party? Beastie boys... period. Thanks for this 😅
Last few years we took a step back I think in all genres of music. 80's and 90's folk know what I'm talking about. We was lucky in the 90's! We had everything from pantera to Tupac! Even country music was good then... the world just seemed better
I saw the Beastie Boys open up for Run-DMC in Oakland Arena in '86. As they would say they were from "Money Makin Manhattan" NY. They had 2 DJ's - DJ Hurricane and DJ Mix Master Mike. They started out as a Punk Rock band in '78 but then really got into Rap in New York. Their rap was very hard rock based. So many good songs to listen to try "Brass Monkey" "So What'cha Want" and "Sure Shot".
The drum loop is a pattern MCA worked out on Adrock's 808, recorded it to reel-to-reel and then flipped the tape and played it backwards. When Run from RUN DMC heard the loop, he went nuts for it and told MCA he had a hit right there.
The Beastie Boys had something that is rare today, across all genres of music... a sense of humor.

This came out and then shortly after is when sounds was out in the ride…put this song and boys n the hood by easy e and when the bass drops game over
They were in the studio when Run DMC did the Aerosmith Classic, they were a Punk band from NY, and broke through, they are Legends
The sound is a drum machine laid down then played backwards. MCA actually invited it and DMC loved it
This beat was a standard early 80,s hip hop beat put in reverse with scratches added. This was 1986......The maracas Asia was hearing were the reversed hi hats mixed from left to right.
this came our in 86 when I was in 6th grade...the album was played at every party or backyard hangout etc..girls or guys...
That whole album is a classic
Beastie Boys started as a punk band in the late 70's. Eventually they met Rick Rubin, and Russell Simmons who started a label called Def Jam records. Russell Simmons brother is Joseph Simmons, who is Reverend Run from RUN-DMC, who have a co-writer credit for this song.
Back when this song came out I had converted the backseat of my 1979 Nova Into a huge subwoofer speaker box! I nearly broke out windows everywhere I went. this is the best song to show off That bass!
Beasties Boys loved music and made there mark along with the founding groups of hip hop.
Old school rap is the best.. late 80s early 90s..after school I couldn't wait to watch yo MTV raps
You gotta do more Beastie Boys. Sure Shot, Shake Your Rump, Check It Out (live David Letterman version), Root Down, and Non Stop Disco Power Pack are all a must.
hip hop Hall of Famers!!!!
This was a lot of fun to watch. Great commentary from both of you. Yeah Beastie Boys have always been there since the RUN DMC days but you forget until you hear one of their songs. They never tried to fit in and just always did their own thing.
Beastie Boys = Legends (def game changers)! THX’s 🔥🔥🔥 reaction cuz BJ you 💯 KNOW! ♥️ yawl
That’s pretty cool that y’all knew of the Beastie Boys and the time period they’re from. Most people who react don’t realize they go that far back.
I bought this cassette tape when it came out in 6th grade or 7th grade and I'm 47 yrs old
I saw the Beastie Boys open up for Run-DMC in Oakland Arena in '86.
Rocker that knows every word!! Rick Ruben brought the guitar player from Slayer to play on tracks like, No Sleep Til Brooklyn.
I was little in the 80s but I remember hearing this stuff. My older brother and cousins played it
On this first vinyl album, it's an airplane. The airplane tail code says, " eatme" backwards
Good job guys keep it up im a 56 year old hip hop fan , beasties was great
The drum loop is a pattern MCA worked out on Adrock's 808, recorded it to reel-to-reel and then flipped the tape and played it backwards. When Run from RUN DMC heard the loop, he went nuts for it and told MCA he had a hit right there.
