At the end of this song, EVERY beastie boys fan heard "hold it now" in their head ...you know who you are
Yes I do
Me!! That's something special from the days of cassette tapes 😊
You ain't wrong, brah
If you know, you know!
HIT IT!
Watching people listen to Paul Revere for the first time is freaking fun.
Great way to end a day because they always dig it.
Thanks for getting this one done.
Yup, they made their own beats. So old school that they recorded the beat to tape and then threaded it through the machine backwards.
And none other than Public Enemy’s Chuck D said that hip-hop’s “dirty little secret” was that “these three skinny white guys had better beats than any of the rest of us.”
I'm using the wax I'm not using the cd
I love that people are still discovering and loving the beasties.
That's not the true story 😮😮on that. You must've Never watched Copyright Criminals program. Once you've seen it, you'll edit your comment. Get with me on it.
This beat is actually a bass drop reversed. They did that often on many of their tracks on ILL. Lots of sampling. Another fun fact, this album is the most sampled Album in the world. You can find many riffs, drum lines and scratches used on this album in hundreds of other music tracks.
Yep. DJ Run had programmed a beat and recorded it on a 4-track cassette recorder. If you play that cassette on the wrong side, it plays two of the tracks backwards. They accidentally put the tape in wrong and it played the kick drum backwards. They liked it and reprogrammed the whole beat to play backwards.
The funny thing is, this reverse beat has been sampled several times but no one else has reversed a beat. It's a trick that only can be used once without sounding like theft, which, as far as I know, is the only DJ technique like that. Like imagine if no one could transform except for the DJ who created it.
"Pauls Boutique", their second album is the one you're thinking of as being the most sampled album ever. Youre head will explode trying to keep up with all of em.
They were able to do this because at that time there were little to no restrictions on sampling in the industry.
If I'm not mistaken "Paul's Boutique" is the album that actually prompted artists to start keeping tabs on their music re sampling.
@@Crooklyn-hx3eo You’re correct, I totally used the wrong album. Thank you.
I just recently figured out “Ryhmin’ and Stealin’ “ is the beginning of Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks.”
Including in the original songs 🙄
Now imagine how amazing this song was in 1986 when it dropped.
My senior year in high school. Didn't imagine, saw them in a hole in the wall club
You should listen to the whole licensed to ill album start to finish...that's what I did in the 80s. Everytime I hear paul revere, my brain immediately expects to hear "hold it now, hit it"
💯
I had the cd in my truck for about a year. Didn't listen every day but about once a week i would hit play. This was in 2010.i first heard then in 88
That reverse bass drop in this song is legendary. Still love bumping this one.
Awwww💜❤💜❤💜🤣🤘
My babysitter used to pick me up from school with Brass Monkey on pause, and soon as I got into the car she'd press play. She would fast forward and rewind the cassette to just the right spot for me.
How you know someone loves you:
Find the beginning of a song on a cassette every dang time the pick you up💜❤💜❤💜
Miss you girl
Mix Master Mike!!!
Sweet. My girl I babysat for the last time today looked me real hard and said "I love you."
@@lizroberts6257 🥰
The bass hits hard on most of the tracks in this album, one could blow out the back window of their ride easily with some of these tracks, bass was a huge thing back then and the beastie boys went hard
I blew many subs from this tape. Lol
@@StefLuvsFoo I feel your pain
Eminem thinks he was the first? I'm 52 and know every word and sing along all the time! LOVE these boys.
I can't tell you how many times we got fucked uplistening to this in the early 90s.
MCA made this beat on his 8-track recorder in the kitchen of his apartment.. he used actual recording tape reversed as a loop.. several feet of tape wrapped around things like a chair to play back, backwards in this case, to be recorded on the proper 8-track tape recorder. mid 80's madness. anything that serves the song
MCA took a reel to reel track of roland 808 bass track and figured out how to run the tape through the player backwards. So they recorded the reverse Roland 808 bass track to another reel so they could play that one forwards on any other machine. Later years people figured how to get machines to create this sound on their own. So Beastie Boys contributed this to Rap/Hip-Hop.
Ok you got me off of being glued to the news in Canada!! Thank you man I love beastie boys I’m a 80’s kid!!! ❤️Tennessee
God bless Canada
I hope Canada removes the Trudeau Regime
I rushed out and got this album when it first came out. And I still have it to this day
I'm in my 50s 😎😉
Same
In 87 i was listening to this. It's nice to see others listening to it all these years later 😁
It's crazy how influential the beastie boys were, like Eazy-E and Ice Cube called them influences
I was a Freshman in high-school when this came out. I had the cassette tape.
i was 12 when this came out. my best friend and i listened to it over and over to memorize the lyrics. 😁
that meant we had to rewind the cassette a bajillion times. the olden days. 🤪🧓
It’s nice to see songs of my youth make people smile today.
Could not click on this fast enough! This is the beastie boys song I hoped you'd do next. Love that reversed beat. I could listen to a whole song of just that.
Great choices ma man, from sunny Australia "it's all good mate", I was listening to these guys when I was 16, they topped the Hip Hop charts at the time.
That beat was made by Jam Master J (Run DMC's dj). After he made it and gave it to the Beastie Boys, they took it back to the studio to lay some rhymes over it. Well, some one put the tape on backwards (old school reel to reel) by accident, and they decided to leave it that way
Actually Adam made it playing with an 808 and then reversed it. It was Run who came up with the first line and then they wrote the song from there.
This whole album is why I need hearing aids at 51 lol When we had the woofers in the boxes and the boosters cranked to the hilt
🔥🔥🔥reaction!!! Hell yes to more Beastie feasting! You will love Egg Man on Paul’s Boutique.
The beats on this record were so sick. They shared a Roland TR-808 drum machine with RUN-DMC, who were recording their Raising Hell album at the same time. But MCA was the guy working on how to run shit backwards, so that's where a lot of these sounds come from. May he rest in power.
Definitely check out the entire Paul's Boutique record, as well as Check Your Head. There isn't a bad song on either. But maybe start with Shake Your Rump and then let me know your thoughts.
DJ: Mix Master Mike, Producer: Rick Reuben, Mike D's dad is Neil Diamond, so all the best samples and beats went to these delightful guys. Beastie Boys are rap royalty.
This is the soundtrack of my youth! License to ill was the record back in the day! It out Beastie Boys on the map! I had License to ill on vinyl, cassette & eventually on CD. They tell quite a story in each of their lyrics!
Your reactions are always so much fun! If you're looking for another great Beastie Boys song definitely check out Get it Together with Q-tip from A Tribe called Quest, its a classic.
From the 80's here! They were awesome
Oh man, if you loved this you must check out "High Plains Drifter"
During their Check Your Head tour ('92), in Orlando, they started this with, " Now....." and threw their mics into the audience. The mics were passed around as everyone recited it by heart. And the Beastie Boys LOVED that interaction with the fans. RIP MCA.
Bought the cassette in '87 and it's been a staple since then. My son grew up listening to this(also born '87).
"they having thanksgiving on this beat". LOVE your reactions!
this was what all the cool kids listened to when I was in 7th grade in Canada in 1987
Paul Revere and So Whatcha Want are so good and still hold up 30-35 years later.
Another great video Da Real Adogg! You can’t go wrong with the Beastie Boys. You said you’ve played six or seven. Let me tell you there’s still some more fire from them out there.
My favorite song they made. Turn the cd cover upside down and read the tail number!!
The smiles overtaking your mug says it all!!!
Brah, imagine listening to this in the 80s in HS. My Nissan Hardbody truck had an alpine pullout deck when they were still frost green illuminated, (2)15" M&M Godfather subs, (4) Kenwood 6x9's, and (4) Punch 45 amps. 🫡. You could hear me coming 2 blocks away. 😂
I’m 26 I’ve been listening to Beastie Boys since i can remember and they’re Fsho in my top 5 hip hop groups
You dancing in your chair is exactly how I do in my car when I play this. I freaking love it so much!
This was the first rap album I ever owned. I had it on cassette and I played it so much I had to buy another copy.
*Song ends
*Me : Hold it now, Hit it ! ....
Listen to their song “She’s Crafty”. Love the drum beat in that song too
The 80's were kicking man.
To get that backwards beat sample on a turn table, you have to get a roll of packing tape, place in center of the turn table, then take the needle cartridge remove and place upside-down, then adjust the tone arm weight to lift the needle upwards. After you get the vinyl centered, weighed down and the needle placed, you are officially spinning in reverse.
The youth has no idea what good rap music is. The 80’s and early 90’s was it buddy. Drive into it. You will love it
My all time favorite Beastie Boys song
My fave off this vinyl... lol yup, old school here!
Classic song.
there is a radio station in BC I believe. Maybe Seattle. I was crashing at friend's place on Orcus Island when this FM played NOTHING BUT BEASTY BOYS for like a week as an intro to the new station. EPIC. ~fits the times lol ~ Rode mtn bikes all over the Island!!!
Hats off to Troy B for giving me and my gal a week of free cabin during the off season !!!!!
These guys are legend.....That beat was in the 80s....they were straight killers with a bucket full of bangers.
Next, Run DMC "It's Tricky".
Then do Aerosmith, the original "Walk this Way".
After that, the two bands' version of "Walk This Way". It blew our minds back then! That mashup helped revive Aerosmith's career, and got a lot of rock fans to give rap a chance.
Thanks for being you!
I was 15 when this came out. EVERYBODY knew every word in no time. The New Style is their best song, imo. Here at the end, yo
Crazy... I actually was in a talent show in elementary school to this song... 1980s
Instant classic! I need to remix this. 🙌🏼
When this album first came out I was a little kid! This song was the first song I ever tried to memorise ever! Love it so much!
Personal fact. I was 5 when this dropped in kindergarten singing this on the swing set said a cuss word part of the song, teacher heard it took me to principles office it was a Christian private school, got five whoopins from the paddle for that song. Oh how the times have changed!!! Congratulations on the 100k
… The beat that will join any song! (Every song form thrash metal to techno)!!
Yea all these dudes played instruments
Takin’ me back! This album was everywhere!!!
Sweet!!! HAHA!! whoever requested this - thank u!!! I remember when this album came out - EVERYONE from my school seemed to have it. I had a mega crush on MCA - God bless him - he passed away.
You really need to check out some of their later stuff also. "Rhyme The Rhyme Well", "Oh Word?", "An Open Letter To NYC"
The summer of 1987 was life changing for me. I was 18 and this album played a part
That reverse bass beat blew a lot of speakers back in the day
i remember when they firsr came out! we use to jam out to their jam GIRLS!
straight nyc hip hop. They talked about every day New York hoodlum lifestyle stuff that we did and it was all facts. That's what made it so appealing to all of us. That and coupled along with the greatest DJ in the world mix master Magic, Mike,
They recorded a pre-programmed track from a cheap electric keyboard/synthesizer, then played it in reverse, and had one of the sickest beats in hip-hop! So simple, yet so perfect!
Roland 808 was never a “cheap electric keyboard/synth”
My friend had a Yellow Geo Tracker with a bumpin system and we was cruising down the Jersey shore blaring this song. We came to a stop sign and this guy in front of his house comes over yelling at us to turn it down. So my friend of course does the opposite. I think it blew his hair off and we were cracking up.
You remember how Oprah Winfrey used to say that a child's experiences write on the slate of who they are...?? THIS is where I grew up. Which is what prepared me for the world to have a talented sense of humor front of this crazy world as best I can, AND HELL, I MISS THE DAYS - WHEN THIS SHIT WAS PRETTY MUCH JUST FICTION MEANT FOR ENTERTAINMENT.
I'm just going to live in the old days when I listen to the Beasties. IMAGINE IF ANDREW DICE CLAY"S BIT CAME TRUE....
Man I just went through your Beastie Boy reactions and you ain't done "Root Down" yet? You gotta make that next on your list.
Love it! ❤❤
Dude 2 TURN TABLES AND A MICROPHONE THATS HOW LOL 🤘🏼🧡LUVYA ADOGG
Oh wait a minute maybe that's 3 MCs & 1 Dj that's where that beat came from lol
Trivia: I forget the story behind this album, but I think there was some animosity towards the record company or something. But look at the tail number on the plane upside down. Also, as a side, that is a Boeing 727, IMO the sexiest commercial airliner, besides the Concorde.
I remember when I put some JL 12s in my car, put this on and got a little concerned about the way this beat was twisting the speakers.
Love Beastie Boys & love your commentaries, you bring a smile with your upbeat attitude. Try out Black Label Society - Blood is thicker than water. From shot to hell album, the whole thing is good.
I still have my Licensed to Ill album I bought in the 80s. I was in the mall and I heard Paul Revere thumping from the record store, never heard anything like it. It’s the only album that I legit like every song on it. As far as the beat, they were under DefJam which is Russell Simmons, he might if had something to do with it.
I walked into Music + to buy Echo and the Bunnymen, heard this overhead. Walked out with the better choice! :D
@@nessaseetah1805 What was playing?
@@heatherpendleton8701 Paul Revere! Walked out with License to Ill! :D Only had enough allowance for one.
They feast on every beat
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS!
Check out "She's on It", "Shake Your Rump", "Hey Ladies", "Brass Monkey", "Hold It Now, Hit It", "Sure Shot"..........etc
thanksgiving on the beat- that's gold
Bruh, react to The Move by Beastie Boys. Dope track banging beat, nice flow. You won't be dissatisfied, it seriously may become a top fave by them.
Iconic band!
By the way in 86 they were signed to Def jam Records.
Time for some Paul's Boutique!!!
They're having Thanksgiving on this beat! It's a perfect way to describe it!
Backward bass sucking air instead of pushing it my favorite beat.
Talented boys. 👍
That's how we did it back in the day
The roofs on fire with that
i sent you a link about the Beastie Boys history and how they made the Paul Revere beat
Interesting factoid:
You hear this song in an Escalade that has like 12- fifteen inch speakers 🔈in the back, that beat sucks the air out of you!
I had this cassette tape in high school. 🤣
Geniuses. Royalty. Grand Royal.
For a beat so simple it has no right being so dirty -- Love it
THE classic!!! 😎😎😎
gotta remember the year this came out
Rick Rubin produced this beat and a lot of other beats under Def Jam records at the time. 🎹🎙️
Back in the day, Old school rules you made your own beats. But I never understood why more rappers haven't used the reverse bass in their beats...
One of the hardest beats of all time.
Cuz Lightyear feat Killa Mike - Pots n' Pans
