Watching this after owning an fz for a few days, I really feel like he's over exaggerating on the engine braking/throttle snap, don't get me wrong!!! There IS that little jolt when the throttle first initially gets applied but it gets butter smooth after that one little pickup!! And the engine braking, I've owned a ninja 500, grom, r6, and a Husqvarna te510. The fz09 by far has the least amount of engine braking out of any of those. It's soooooooo nice you can just throw your hands off the bars and not get yeeted forward. I can see on a first ride, really wanting to bring attention to every noticable detail of the experience, but please please please if you're reading this and looking at an 09, and those notes make you want an 07, seriously go test ride an 09 I promise you it won't be as bad as your thinking. As long as you have previous experience and know how to manage your throttle, it really is super super tame, this bike is perfectly happy cruising at 20 in 1st perfectly smooth, the r6 would be bogging like crazy trying to get you to give it more throttle, it's the PERFECT commuter bike. Highly highly highly highly recommend

Chase - You nailed it with the torque comments. Like my father always used to say, "horsepower is great but it's the torque that does the work". That is why you can feel it and that is why you are having so much fun with it. Excellent job!
i love my mt09. i live in A mode. once you get used to the front end being slightly soft which it is (iv'e never had a problem with the rear shock, ever) and the bike does demand absolute mastery of the throttle before you can throw her around then its an absolute dream of a machine and if you value a bike based on how you feel when riding it there is very little that can touch the mt09. the motard looks. the price, the amount of bike for your money. its just ear to ear smiling all day. every time you open your garage you will smile.
The reason they flattened the seat with the 2017 version is that people complained getting their nuts crushed by the tank because they kept slipping forwards. Also, there's no such thing as too much power (unless it's way way too much power)
I just got this bike 5 days ago (2nd hand v2), coming from Honda cbr600rr. This bike will change your perspective on what motorcycles can do! Such a Beast!
@@mydinosaurz5479 no, not for the street as a first bike. Dirt bikes are relatively light weight compared to this bike. Try a ninja 650 or a fz07. Fz09 is a little too unpredictable.
I swear Yamaha should pay you commission. I bought my R3 after watching your first ride, now I bought a 2017 FZ09 after watching this first ride. I’m absolutely loving it also!!
I sold my 2012 R6 for a 2018 MT09 and I have no regrets. I mostly do street riding and the amount of torque this bike has is insane. I leave it in Standard mode and tc 1. Only issue I have is the fuel Guage reads weird sometimes. It'll say you have 3 bars remained then it's suddenly reading 1 after you've parked it up and get back on.
Please fix this, when you're speaking you are so quiet and then comes the music and it's so loud!! i always have to quiet it down and then make it louder again that's realy annoying...

Not sure if it's been stated yet but you can turn TC off. With the bike a complete stop and no throttle input, press and hold the TC button up. Source: I own this bike 🤣
Redd_slayer I just bought a 2017, and I couldn't agree more. From all the videos I had watched I partially expected it to be a jumpy mess but it's nice and smooth as long as you provide smooth inputs.
motovloggers arent known for their riding skill (See Yammienoob) The throttle is crazy, but with a light tough and proper modulation, in B mode it can be ridden smoothly.
The power modes basically adjust how quickly the throttle bodies react to throttle input, if you have a light touch then you can a mode around, a good dyno tune will go along way though, mine is completely rideable daily in a mode now, I'd like to see your thoughts on the new z900 though, that looks like a Mt09 killer

Yep. A lot of bikes come from the factory with a lot of play for safety reasons, bad play can definitely make it feel like it "lags" because you have to twist your wrist a lot more to get gas (sometimes you can't easily even max out the throttle comfortably).
Yeah, I'm late to the party but have watched many of your reviews. I've been riding nothing but dirt bikes since the age of 5, no "street bike" experience. But now at 51 years of age, the dirt hurts more often than not and I am looking for something to just take the edge off after a day of work. I've ridden all CCs dirt from 500 two strokes to today's modern 450 4 strokes. I don't want crazy but I don't want grandma and I think the FZ09 or MT 09 by now is the answer
I have a 2014 yamaha FZ09...everything you said about the bike, is how I feel about it. I changed my grips for the same reason. and the power makes it a beast. anyway is the 2014 or 15, 16 power the same as the 2017. (just heard you say the 2014 torque is all on you) great review on 2017.👊

Hey Chase, Much of the criticism of this bike in the past if I recall was that the throttle response felt more like an electronic switch rather than a true throttle. Did you feel that the 2017 has improved in this aspect? And did you know if those changed carried over into the XSR900 as well?
That's a good question. I just got the 16 early last year. The main thing I like are the headlights and that rear tire cover because I hate how much stuff the fz-09 throws up once you get a fender eliminator kit on.
LazyWaffleman if it had just been visual then no it wouldn't be but they really sorted this bike out. It will be worth waiting for a 2017 to be sold as used.
To turn off traction control you just hold the switch up while at a stop. It takes a few seconds but it will turn off. I have the 2017 fz09 in that exact color and I love it. Upgraded from an r3. Leaving the dealer I did an accidental wheelie in B mode! I will say that you get used to the instant power at low speeds after putting a few miles on it.
people comlaining about him cornering have to think first... this isn't his bike so he can't risk wrecking it because even if you know your bike you can crash look at his crash video plus i dont see any curvy roads there
Sleepingdragon 1 As someone that has owned several Japanese bikes, I couldn't agree more. Don't get me wrong, I love Yamaha but they're just not cutting it anymore for me personally. I would LOVE a tuono but they're a bit pricey for me. I'm waiting for the new Street Triple to be on the market and for more extensive reviews to be done on it because I would love that as my next bike. A bit more expensive than the FZ-09 but you're getting all the bang for your buck with the Street Triple in my opinion.
Jovan Irving You must be a mind reader. I'm a huge Tuono fan. The new 1200 factory spec I think it's called looks simply fantastic. I love a V4 engined bike too, great powerplants. The best sounding engine, even better sound than a triple. The new Triumph with the quality parts like the Brembos etc just smash the Yamaha to bits. The new design has made the handling even better plus the cc increase makes the Triumph the one you'd choose. The reviews so far say the bike is superb.
Sleepingdragon 1 Dude you're 100% right, the V4 is a fantastic setup, but that sound. That V4 sound is what makes my heart race every time I hear it. I would take that over any triple any day just for that grunt. That crossplane R1 sound gets me going too. But everything about the Tuono is simply amazing...except for that price. But I guess you get what you pay for. Anyway haha. I couldn't agree more. Triumph really killed it with this new Street Triple. I would go as far to say it pretty much blows all of the Japanese bikes out of the water in its class and (I haven't done very extensive research on it but...) is probably a strong contender for the Ducati monster. I was hoping for an upgraded look to the bike to match all of the upgraded components but I can overlook the looks due to all of the upgrades. What it boils down to: I just really want a new bike haha
Sleepingdragon 1 Can you imagine how good a Mt09 RS would be ... I bet Triumph are hoping they don't make one .... Triumph have had to work really hard to make a bike that's better than the "Standard ".. MT09.... :-)))
For the throttle play, on my tracer I just rolled back the rubber on the throttle cable and adjusted the nut to remove all but 1mm of play. You can see this at 23:04 just inside of level with the instrument panel. Maybe its the same?
Cornering where? I lived in US for a while and everything is a straight line, Europe is way more small/cramped with everything you need being like 10 minutes away from where you live.
Use the rear brake to control wheelies. When you feel it's starting to lift, add rear brake to keep the front on the ground. Thta way you don't need to close/open/close the throttle resulting in a more smoother power delivery.
I love A mode ! It's all I use on my Fz-09 , granted it's been flashed to make it a bit smoother but even before flashing I used A mode all the time . If your smooth with the throttle there is barely any jerkiness at all
Bertrand they don't weigh the same the FZ-07 has better suspension if you aren't talking about the 2017 models (I don't think the 2017 FZ-07 had anything but optional ABS added). The FZ-07 is better on gas has a great engine sound and is better behaved. They are both fantastic bikes Jakethegardensnake knows his way around fast bikes and a wheelie or two and he chose the FZ-07 I think that says something but it also might have been he didn't want to spend much more. The FZ-07 is a playful bike with plenty of power and the FZ-09 is a serious bike that will request you treat it as such until you have tamed it.
I would love to get the fz-07 but when I went to a dealer and sat on both side by side the fz-09 was way more comfy for me being 6'4, 210 lbs. Having my feet up on the pegs I feel cramped on the fz07 which annoys me since I love the aesthetic appeal and the sound it produces. The 3 cylinder is still great sounding though.
Perhaps rearsets would help out. I'm 6'2" and in the same dilemma, and the 2016 leftovers are going for $6500 or less. But, with the z900 coming out at $8400 non-abs, it's worth a look too.
im glad they changed the tail light on the 17 version. The 2016 version the rear tail like looked like it was just slapped on as an after thought.. nice vid chase
I had a naked(2001 hornet), a dual sport (2005 bmw 650gs) and last one I had was a cruiser. Cruiser was a bit boring (vulcan900). I been looking at this bike for a while. Is it too much to handle? Or is that torque part of the character a more love it feature? Im gonna ride once two years longer trips, rest are commutes and city. Will this be too much? Is it manageable?
and this tail light fits bike so nice www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiVvYa76ajSAhUCMyYKHRmiBjAQjRwIBw&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.motovationusa.com%2Ffender-eliminator-integrated-tail-light-kit-by-nrc-XSR-FE.html&psig=AFQjCNEmMOhs1_-jbLfM6cvi9xOOyyBNXQ&ust=1488028818872158
Wow 😳 you sold me on that tail light lol! Any other after market parts you would suggest? Was already thinking of doing a full akrapovic carbon exhaust
In reviewing this bike on the road like this, you have to take it on the twisties otherwise you're just not gonna have the fun this bike can offer. Riding on a straight road around town can only highlight the low down torque. To feel the handling you gotta take these bikes up to the hills Chase. You also need to check out the new Triumph Street Triple. The obvious comparable bike.

I always skip the intro and go straight to the riding part. I'm no interested how the bike looks. And if I were, I could just look at pictures provided by Yamaha. I bet the intro is most labor intense part of the video :D and still it is full of shite!
zachmarkham84 it's his choice and I know the site he usually uses and it's strictly music that hasn't been copyrighted. The whole point of having music is because getting beauty shots of a bike and having no music is stupid. Some people actually enjoy the music just like some people enjoy gangster rap or death metal.

Been waiting to watch this video all day!
Is Triumph going to give you the new Street Triple 765 to mess around with???????
Jovan Irving If I was in this market for a new bike I know which I'd choose. It wouldn't be Japanese.
Yourself?
Your explanation on torque is almost the same reason why I like crazy girls. It's way more fun if you have to hold on or get tossed.
LOL
been waiting for you to review this new mt09. great job dude!
How Americans test a bike: Straigt roads all the time.
EVER HEARD ABOUT CORNERING?!
Rewicet there are lots of straight roads....Also he is riding in town not carving canyons.
scott k the roads in the US tend to be just straight in the cities. European cities tend to be more curvy
Cornering where? I lived in US for a while and everything is a straight line, Europe is way more small/cramped with everything you need being like 10 minutes away from where you live.
Rewicet no they haven't that's why there's cruisers everywhere in North America.
Russ Barrack
maybe in most places but where I'm at in eastern pennsylvania there is nothing but hills and curvy roads
Use the rear brake to control wheelies. When you feel it's starting to lift, add rear brake to keep the front on the ground. Thta way you don't need to close/open/close the throttle resulting in a more smoother power delivery.
11:02 them tires on that car aint movin lmao!
I love A mode ! It's all I use on my Fz-09 , granted it's been flashed to make it a bit smoother but even before flashing I used A mode all the time . If your smooth with the throttle there is barely any jerkiness at all
i wish they updated the mt07 with the same styling as this :/
pxKfatmaN I just want an updated headlight. Is that too much to ask for?
true...and maybe give it the same "backplate holding thing" lol
pxK exactly. The FZ-07 still has a nasty ass ugly headlight.
The updated fz07 looks a little better but still the same bland style
Just switch the light
How do you compare to the XSR900? Now that they are pretty much the same price now.
The previous FZ09 has that trademarked "fancy turn on thing" too, just sayin'
Lighthouse indicators!!! man them things are massive
B = Beast Mode
Sid Nl beast mode.... would love to see it lit up on the dash saying beast mode. 😀
It's only beast mode on the FZ-10
A = Alpha mode
STD mode = is this bike trying to kill me
Great review. A friend of mine just bought this bike and I send him this. Great job.
Is the FZ-09 worth the extra money when comparing to the FZ-07???
Depends on what you want.
Yes it is! It has a lot more power, sharper handling and weighs the same.
The best moto vlogger in the world on the best naked bike in the world ... Perfect combination !
Z900? best competition imo
3 cylinders are epic 😤
All kindz of scan back action....all kindzzz
loved all the laughing... you sold me on FZ-09 for real. I bought an '08 SV650 in November for a first bike, and the FZ-09 will def be my next bike!!
Z900 plz
bought mine 6 days ago. it is a beast!
Try to get ahold of a Vmax 1700! there are literally no good reviews on UA-cam and you'd soak up those views like a sponge haha
Y'all are crazy, Chase has amazing taste in music.
omg, the dash being on the right side ruins this for me
Ryan Gulley there is a relocation kit that centers the dash
just put ur phone on the left
im glad they changed the tail light on the 17 version. The 2016 version the rear tail like looked like it was just slapped on as an after thought.. nice vid chase

I have been waiting for this test ride
F***** SICK INTRO MAN!!!
Skip to 2:09 to avoid the shit music...
This is what the FZ09 should have been all along. I want one so bad.
the front end kinda look like '14 Z1000
جابر المغامر مول الزريعة هشام i know, thats why i said "kinda
I'm getting one!!! Chase I think the bike is so popular because of that torque and power and the price point!!
Someone call optimes prime we got a Decepticon on the lose!!!
FZ07 bolt shit on series, im gonna turn A wrench this makes me A customizer
Albin Södergren wrong vlogger bro 😅
Hypocrite Biker damn it, almost right tho same bike...... almost.....
Just bought a 2016 mt09 and coming from a k6 gsxr 1000 this thing blows my mind. Great vid 👊👊
i love my xsr 900
Im stuck between this and a xsr900.
its same bike different style i liked the cafe racer look of it
Yeah, I love the 60th anniversary edition, starting to lean more towards the xsr.
and this tail light fits bike so nice www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiVvYa76ajSAhUCMyYKHRmiBjAQjRwIBw&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.motovationusa.com%2Ffender-eliminator-integrated-tail-light-kit-by-nrc-XSR-FE.html&psig=AFQjCNEmMOhs1_-jbLfM6cvi9xOOyyBNXQ&ust=1488028818872158
Wow 😳 you sold me on that tail light lol! Any other after market parts you would suggest? Was already thinking of doing a full akrapovic carbon exhaust
Thank you for the review. I'm really into this bike and after this video I definitely want to test drive this beauty 😍
please explore other genre's of music
MrFunnyMonkey Nah DUBSTEP FOR LIFE! 😂😂😂😭😭😭
It's a STREET FIGHTER NOT A CRUISER.... braaaaaaaaaaaapppp🏍💨
Just got this same exact bike yesterday! loving it!
Did you survive?
Holy balls that music is horrible. God. if you must, make it 10 seconds
Boring track but a clean and well done production :P Horrible, i think not.
thewn watch somebody else who fits your "exquisite taste" in music
Riding Weeb We are not here for the music :D
I've been waiting for this very video!!
Wow, looks aggressive
I was really considering this as my first bike, but 5 min in looking at that acceleration's got me thinking about the 07 instead.
John Smith fz07 would be worst without traction control
