2020 MT-09 owner here, overall I love the bike and would recommend it. However I would recommend to Yamaha, it REALLY REALLY needs cruise control in the USA. I also think they should by standard come with some type of mini windshield so it deflects the wind a bit so it doesn't hit my chest creating drag/resistance. Also I find the seats unbearable for long rides even with the MT-09 comfort seat upgrade. I will soon upgrade to a saddleman but little disappointed I have to spend 500 for a saddleman seat. Coming from person who only ridden 2007 GSXR for 10 years and then this, OMG the torque is awesome and makes city commuting bearable. Anyways over all this bike is awesome but this is coming from a person who really only ridden two types of motorcycle.
2019 MT09 owner here, first bike at that. Now with that said I would've did things differently a second time around and went with a less powerful bike.
Yeah, it's just like an anxiety attack all the time. A less powerful bike is more fun when learning, plus they're cheaper so you aren't afraid to drop them as much.
After my first bike which was a MT07 for 2 Years A2 I now own a MT09SP since oktober 2019 and I love it so much character and the Suspension is so good
I was really close to picking up a FZ-09, but after doing some research it came across as too much of a hooligan bike. I wanted something with power and handling, but was still tourable. Ended up grabbing a FZ1 Gen 2. Changed out the sprockets, put an R6 throttle tube on, and flashed the ECU. It's now nicely schizophrenic depending on where you are in the RPM range.
As someone that got a GSXS750 last year, I have been thinking of the MT09 obsessively since then. The lack of low end on the GSXS is brutal, and as a city rider it was probably the worst motorcycle decision I’ve made, and my first bike was a KLR250 that barely ran.
i dont really like hondas 35kw 500ccm bikes in general... i made my A2- bike decision between fz07 and cbr 500r and i think my decision for fz07 really is the best one i ever could have made.
@@angolischesilberruckenmowi246 In terms of going from an A1 to an A2, I can totally get that. I don't think I'd pick the 500 series of bikes if I was on the tiered system either. I'm in Canada though, which is like the US in terms of licensing. As a first bike, which was my case, I think they make much more sense. Has enough punch to not get bored immediately (this year is my 3rd year with my 500R), but still friendly enough to not get yourself yeeted off into the sun. I know Honda made that engine for the tiered licensing system in Europe to accommodate the A2 tier, but I feel they have more use here in North America as friendly yet still fun and punchy first bikes that one won't immediately get bored of in the first 2 months.
@@Gofr5 yep, cbr 500r does really make sense for you i guess. dont understand me wrong, the honda is a fuckin great bike, i just decided to took the fz becauce im able to drive it with 75hps (which really is enough for first two years with unrestricted license in my opinion) and i dont want to buy a third bike when im 21 because i dont have got the money for that. always ride safe and have fun with your beautiful cbr my friend!

Can confirm 2014 Mt09 throttle... good motor but not sure what they did to connect it to the throttle. Hopefully the newer ones they fixed it. And the suspension.
Have the 2017 MT09 (UK) model, pros - it's awesome, I commute every day and it's great whatever the weather done 27k miles. Cons went through 2 starter solenoids, 1 starter switch, and a side stand cut off switch in the first 2 years. The controls are cheap and nasty and the horn button is in completely the worst place ever, my thumbs aren't 5" long! Would I recommend? hell yeah!
i agree i have 25 motorcycles over the years its fun , light , plenty of power and has a very light front end that give accidental wheelstands now and again lol
Hey Yami, newly endorsed motorcycle rider here and I have to say, thank you for all your beginner bike videos. They have helped me so much in my search for my first bike. I’m proud to tell you that you’ve helped and lead me to purchase a Turbo Busa with Hentai graphics. Thank you! ❤️
Even tho its better its still very flawed and in some cases i would say dangerous, i have ridden the 2019 mt09 on good rubber with correct suspention setting & SAG and the bike was unstable while doing more than 170 km/h in straight line and in fast corrners (110km/h) with high lean it was more than unstable. I loved the engine and the ergos (and the price ofc) but i knew this would end badly. The bike works great unless you start pushing it hard. Today with things like the 790 duke or the new street triple R with full electronics and great suspention its hard to choose the mt 09 even if its a bit cheaper...
I bought a 2014 FZ09 last month, after riding a R3 for a year. "Luckily", the prev owner haven't done the throttle remap, so I can test it. Every millimeters of the throttle matters lol. I didn't even use standard mode for commuting. After the dealer remaps the throttle, it smooth out a lot. I never did any unwanted wheelie. So if you smooth out your throttle at start, you will be fine. The down side of this bike is the fuel tank is a bit small for triple-cylinder imo. It will get quite hot to your leg under the sun (maybe I was upgrade from a 2-cylinder fairing to 3-cylinder naked). BTW, I am 5'5 so I have a difficulty to walk the bike backward, but otherwise is okay.
I have had the 2015 FZO9 for 3 seasons now. I'm 52 and have ridden the old 1977 - 1980 KZ'S and Suzuki gs850 1982 . Dirt bikes etc.. but yes this pulls harder than any I've rode. Light weight and tons of torque. Yes if you even hit a bump in the road and your hand twists a fraction the throttle pulls. I never did wheelies on street bike until this one. Not big long ones but HUNDREDS of them. Experience helps. Respect this bike or it bites
I’ve ridden liter bikes, mt10, mt07, and I’ve yet to find a more fun bike than an mt09. With a full system and tune and upgraded suspension, there is no more smiles per miles than an mt09
Thought of getting one as my first bike. I was riding a MT-07 in driving school, so it’s just a natural step up, right? However, I never really liked the MT-07, partly because the on/off throttle response in gears 1-3. Pair that with more power and torque? Just no. Thankfully Papa Yam recommended the SV650 often enough! As soon as I jumped on that bike for a test ride I felt right at home! It put a huge smile on my face. Signed the sales contract for my own one just yesterday!
Yeah, the SV650 is basically the perfect middleweight. Gotta say though, *not* a great first bike. That still has a ton of power and torque for what it is. Please please please take it slow and practice in parking lots as much as possible so you can keep riding for years to come.
@@jonathanesqueda3452 It's an amazing bike, and I had one and loved it to death (literally, it was totaled in a wreck that I had no control over). But it's certainly a bit too powerful and heavy for someone that's never ridden much before. That power to weight ratio is like having a 500HP car at around 3000lbs weight. Would that be appropriate for a new driver? Now couple that with the immensely different skill set and higher risk that comes with a motorcycle in general.
@@Cheezmonka i can see your point but if they have done the msf course its totally fine but tbh i really have no place to talk, my first street bike was an r6 that i bought at 15, im 16 now and havent dropped or crashed it. Ive had it for about 8 months and i had like 6 months of dirt bike experience so the r6 wasnt too powerfull at all could be because all the power is at the top end so whenever i do want that i just drop a gear and twist the throttle

I like what Lemme from RevZilla said about MT09 "it's an $8000 engine in a $1000 bike" LOL so much R&D in Yamaha motors, then slap on some floppy blinkers, tiny dash, whatever else we got laying around...
The 2016 MT09 has the old style headlight but features traction control and ABS (at least in the UK) im pretty sure the throttle response on it is more refined than the earlier model. If you are going second hand and like the older styling try and aim for a 2016 as youll get features from both although it does still lack the fully adjustable suspension. I own this year and believe it to be a good compromise although ive swapped out the springs and shock for something that wasnt designed for a monster truck :D
The mt-09 is the slowest bike I’ve ever owned! However it is prolly the funnest streetbike I’ve had. Handles so good, flickable, torque. But raw horsepower and speed compared to busa’s and liter bikes is not there. I love it though.

I bought one about the same time as you! Had it about 2 months now. I LOVE IT. Too bad they just released a new 9 yesterday and pretty sure an all new 10 is coming out for 2021. Should have waited!!

@@yammienoob I do not like that bloke one bit. I have lost count how many times he has said not to buy a particular motorcycle, then within a few months he goes and buys that motorcycle he said not to buy.
I just think his YZF450 has spoiled and ruined him too much. How else do you get to the point that you call a 420 lbs 115hp bike a heavy bike that's only good for cruising? Lol
I want to see a show a la The Grand Tour with Yammie Noob, Cycle Cruza, and Hammy Moto. One can dream right?
First gen Fz-09 also has ride modes A-track; STD; b-rain. XSR900 also had slipper clutch from the get-go.
Yammie is scared of the mt09
A little over 10,000 miles on my mt09. Wouldn’t ever recommend for a first bike. Loved every mile
Yammie, I ride a 1979 ,1000 cc plus Harley Davidson Sportster, 800 miles! Now the fun! 11.5 foot hard tail ! Easy Rider tribute chopper! Only bike I've ever rode! And a handful of pain! Love your videos!
Just bought my 2020 today, melts your face everywhere.
"why does he talk so fast?" ive got u on 1.5x speed cause i just don't have time to watch videos all day!
Another sweet bike vid. And then you should do a review on a CBR 500r cuz I like
I know for a fact that Spite likes the 500R as it's the only beginner friendly sportbike he's tried that actually fits him. lol
i dont really like hondas 35kw 500ccm bikes in general... i made my A2- bike decision between fz07 and cbr 500r and i think my decision for fz07 really is the best one i ever could have made.

I've been watching your videos for the past year before I've decided to buy my own Motorcycle. Guess what, I've got a Yamaha Mt09. Despite you saying MT07 is better, I still got the Yamaha Mt09 as my first bike! FIRST BIG BIKE! oh, I own an XC Bicycle Trail Bicycle, and a Scooter 125cc at only 1800kms. I consider myself a beginner rider but still, I got the Yamaha MT09.
I've been following all of your advise tho. Thanks for your videos. They also inspired me to start Vlogging. Hahaha.

Yamaha bikes are just so damn awesome
As a 2019 MT-09 owner, for about 4 months and 7k miles, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to a rider in the market. The 2.7 second 0-60 is an unbeatable feeling at a manageable price.
too bad mt09 suspension are pathetic and unsafe
@@Tonyx.yt. true, got one, had to chang both, and still the bike is realy scary at the acceleration. (and scary in a bad way, you dont feel in control of the front). It's a realy good engine but with poor engineering around it.
@@Benxley-m1n with similar price and power i prefer by far bikes like z900 and suzuki 750, both them with decent stock suspension
@@Benxley-m1n The MT09 is like an American muscle car. Just a whole lot of engine and not much else, just the basics to hurl you into all kinds of trouble lol.
I have been looking into getting one of these over the last few weeks. This is a sign.
I switched from a Harley Sportster 1200 (my first bike) to an MT-09. It was quite the learning curve, but about a year after getting the MT, I finally feel like I'm understanding the bike much better. I agree that it would not be responsible to get one for your first bike. But who am I, just some random dude on the internet who's name is cooked bread. Preach, Papa Yam.
Love my 2018 MT-09, I started on it as MY first bike but I've been on dirtbikes for 20 plus years and had my endorsement for over 10 years just riding family and friends bikes and finally bought one of my own. 100% agree that I love yamaha engine character across the board that's why I bought it.
Wanted fz09 to upgrade after the fz07 but got the fj09(Tracer 900) instead because frickin highway commute to work. The engine is amazing it puts a smile on my face everyday.
After 4 years of a cbr 125, 1 year of a virago 535 and just bought my mt07 a couple of months ago, i tell you something, the progressive evolution of power is the way to go!

Can confirm 2014 Mt09 throttle... good motor but not sure what they did to connect it to the throttle. Hopefully the newer ones they fixed it. And the suspension.
I started on a 2016 fz-09 on my first bike, loved it
Have the 2017 MT09 (UK) model, pros - it's awesome, I commute every day and it's great whatever the weather done 27k miles.
Thank you! ❤️
I love my MT-09 and I love you Hammie Lube!
my friend bought an fz09 for his first bike, did a power wheelie and crashed it after 3 week of owning the bike
yet im 64 ride like a hoon and manage to keep it upright lol
2019 MT-09 throttle is waaay better. How do I know? I own one... oh and btw, the suspension is better also.
True, just got a 2019 SP version myself :)
And now the 2021 09 makes the rest look like garbage tech-wise. The front end on the 2021 is ugly AF though
When did the suspension get redone. 2018 or 2019?
@@gavinpaterson3658 2017 I think
I've went from an SV650 to an mt09.
Thank you yammie, for making me happy about my decisions
Thats what i got right now and hoping to get the MT09!
@@evannash1560if you do. Grab a ZX6r shock for the rear, it makes it a hell of a lot better

@@Cheezmonka its really one of the best... dont know what youre talking about
@@jonathanesqueda3452 It's an amazing bike, and I had one and loved it to death (literally, it was totaled in a wreck that I had no control over).
@@jonathanesqueda3452 Ah, gotcha. Well, all I ask is that y'all study and practice, always. Even veteran and expert riders should do meaningful and focused practice often. Anybody remember Yamaha 850 triple from the eighties? Damn good looking bike
