Thanks for doing a review on these two books. I don’t think anyone has done it before. I didn’t like the motor age layout , it’s kinda vague. I do like all the prep questions on the delmar even though the info can be vague as well. We need someone to make a third Book that can have best of both worlds and video links.
I thought it would be a good idea because someone left a comment asking which one was best. I am not sure about the rest of the Motor Age Training books but the automatic transmission one was pretty good. I think using every source of material helps out. @@DriversTherapy So I just took my L1 yesterday and did not pass unfortunately. I bought the A1-A8 & L1 Del Mar book a while back and my work had these books for A1-A8. I am master certified now(A1-A8) and these books helped me alot and I studied with both. The only one I didn't use the motorage books with the A series for was my A6 recert because I passed that one first when I went to tech school. I did not use the motorage book for the L1, had to source alot of information and trying to find graphs and other stuff online, like you mentioned, was a struggle and it still didn't expose me to everything on the test. I did alot of research on the L1 tests and another youtube channel recommended this series after not passing the L1 multiple times, they showed some of the lab scopes in the book and they looked identical to stuff I saw in the test that I wasn't as prepared for. I rush ordered this from Amazon to be delivered tomorrow! Lol
@@michaelbarnes96 what’s up Master Tech! I’m sorry to hear you didn’t pass the L1. I hear that test is one of the hardest test. I think you approached it correctly but it looks like your missing some more in-depth information. The Motorage books help in that department but I also recommend to write down areas you are unclear and visit a shop or a trade school and have someone with a lot of knowledge about in that area to help describe and explain it further.

Not all people test well. You may understand and be able to master a task but not a test. So it makes sense to utilize all resources available to get your certification. This video brings that to light, good job Elise and David.

In my opinion the Delmar book is more useful for people who already have the certification i.e. the recertification guys , because you don’t really need the information in the book because the knowledge is already with you via experience you just need to practice how to interpret the test wording. The motor age book are for people who are fresh out of school or just straight new to the industry, promoted from lube to helper, and is trying to get as much information as possible while studying for the test to be certified and be ready incase they do go on their own, they at least have the theory and be able to create their own process in doing what they do
Thanks for taking the time to share your review of these 2 brands. Being a technician is not cheap, ASE tests aren't cheap either, so your review really points an individual in the right direction they want to take.
I work for the city and have to get 4 ASEs by June (my 1 year anniversary. One good thing is they have study guides, but you have to hope they have the one you want since it’s limited. Im studying T4 now since I hear (and hope) brakes tend to be the easiest. Another good thing is they don’t require any specific ASE, just any 4. We’re shooting for brakes (T4 and A5), then G1 (general maintenance and light repair). I know they’re tough, I’ve known some great techs that couldn’t pass these. I also known guys that couldn’t fix a sandwich pass. Hopefully studying will help.
Some advice for you, buy both the Delmar and MotorAge study guides, go through the test at least three time on each. Whatever you get wrong and need help on, go into a deep drive using UA-cam but if you have access to a shop or can shadow and question a Master Tech, that is a great idea too. The test can be tricky but once you get an idea how they work, it is passable. Let me know if I can help. I am putting together some programs of my own, but it will be a few months till they are out.

Some of the tests are pretty hard. Tested my confidence even after studying for so long but I passed them. The closest I got was passing by a few points but I will take it. So have as much material to look at can only. help out in the end. MASTER TECH BABY. :D
I think motor age is good for somebody who wants to know the theory and the operation of a vehicle and Delmar prepares you for ASE testing in my opinion
I passed first try with delmar then decided to buy a set of books saw the nice spiral bound motorage. Failed every try ended up just buying the delmar and passing
I passed a good portion of my ASE's (including L1) by using Del-Mar and the actual ASE practice test guide available from ASE themselves. I'm due for recert this June, and am going to purchase the respective Motor Age book to gauge it's competence and effectiveness. But Del-Mar has been go to.

A8, even if you read cover to cover, it looks like you need to go beyond to pass...EVAP, Turbo, Starter diagrams is unlike anything you have never seen on those little books...I test well, FAA , SAT, A+ & such but this A8 has little info out there .

I noticed from the Motor Age web site that the last issue was 2012. I have a copy of it from 2006. Do you think it's too far out of date for my first go around testing?
I think you can use the 2006 but getting the newer version would help if you are rusty in the topic. Unless you have been working day in day out at a shop working with the certain subject you are testing on, I would get as much study material as you can. Thanks for checking out the channel.
They are entirely 2 different books. I'd choose the Delmar If you are at the point to take a test, this is not the time to start learning. The main intent of these books is test practice. Delmar looks to be 2-3 times more pages thus 2-3 times more practice. My experience in learning is not to use resources that try to be all things in one place as limiting their size/cost, limits their scope and detail. There are very good automotive theory & operation guides in whole or by topics,. I think MA trying to squeeze these together does discredit to both. I'd just go for the better practice test, thats the goal and if needed refer back to my original books for study/review of systems. .I wouldn't say you're wrong, just saying thats just my preference.

There is a separate ASE test for trucks, and I do not have a lot of experience working on them. But some information does cross over.

Everyone studying habits and abilities are different. These books helped me pass all my test and some. I hope you find something that works for you.
