    This test was hard but is rewarding when you pass. In this video, I talk about passing the Automotive Service Excellence A1 Engine Repair test. I share what I did to study, the subject areas I think you must review, and the study material. The study guide I picked up on Amazon has some great practice test questions and truly helped me.
    If you do get the guide, make sure to do the tests more than once. After you take them once, go study and watch some good UA-cam videos about the subjects you need help with.
    When it comes to engine-building and learning more about internals, this channel was a lot of help. Pete's Garage / coolcarshotguitars

    Congrats on passing your A1! I do highly recommend studying from the Motor Age series books. They have a lot of theory on the subjects you are studying for.
    Also another thing, take your tests in corresponding pairs; A1/A8, A2/A3 A4/A5 & A6/A7. They generally relate to each other in terms of questions goes which is very helpful. If you really wanna challenge yourself, go for the A9 as well. For me personally that was 1 of the hardest test I have taken out of all 9 Automobile series tests.
    I just got my Master certificate about a month ago so I can definitely relate to your journey dude. Wish you all the best!

    To me the A1 seems like 50% pure engine repair questions, 40% engine performance questions similar to the A8, and 10% A6 automotive electrical questions.

    • @DriversTherapy
      @DriversTherapy  3 роки тому +1

      You can but you will have to get the work experience in order to be certified. The work requirement is 2 verifiable years. The test cover a lot of ground so you can try to take them now but working at a shop or dealing with related stuff day in day out will help you pass it. Not saying you can’t pass them but that the tests are challenging without solid experience. Thank you for watching the video and if tit have anymore questions let me know.

    Great work, and 'grats on another pass! So possibly-oblivious question, but is there some kind of practical exam, or is it 100% knowledge tests? Not sure what that would be for a master tech (I doubt they're going to have you assemble a motor from scratch in front of a panel, lol) but I know with programmers often an interview will involve people actually coding something in front of a sr. engineer.

    • @DriversTherapy
      @DriversTherapy  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Richard!!! There is no “hands on” exam but the questions in the test try to solve that by asking you questions that only someone who has done it before can answer it. Like using a plastigage and what you would you use it on. Another example is questions about thrust bearing clearances and then they give you measurements and ask you what a typical amount of play is acceptable. You have to know what the typical clearance range is to even answer that question. Who knows that lol. Also, in order to be certified you have to submit work experience so I think in a way both methods try to cover the hands on experience logically. I have not done a lot of engine work but some. The gaps in experience I tried to fill by watching this pro engine builder for hours a day for awhile. It has been a lot of learning. It is such a fun and rewarding experience since at the end of the day it’s about cars!!! 😀

    • @LapoftheWorld
      @LapoftheWorld 3 роки тому +1

      @@DriversTherapy Thanks for explaining that. I figured there had to be some vetting there and I imagine the program has been around long enough that they know what works to keep the credibility of the certification. Getting into engine guts isn't something I've ever done but I'm comfortable, at this point, just knowing enough people who have in case I need to phone a friend.

    • @DriversTherapy
      @DriversTherapy  3 роки тому +1

      @@LapoftheWorld true! Now don’t get me wrong, it’s all about experience. Even with a cool title of Master tech, many certified technicians still need to do engine builds and rebuilds for decades to really fill that title but being a master tech gives others and yourself the confidence to start and build that experience successfully most of the time. Like you know, a degree or certification is just a ticket to learn.

    like right now the ASE question asked me about the piston and how to measure it before installation so that it has proper room to properly fit inside a clyinder in order to allow it expand when the engine is hot with the rings. I couldn't under the vague question that was written in the most vague way possible and when i read the answer i couldn't understand anything that was being said in the answer until i did a research. Now i could of remember the question just to remember it but would of never understood what it said therefore I would of learned nothing.

    • @DriversTherapy
      @DriversTherapy  2 роки тому +1

      Have you assembled an engine before? Installing rings is straight forward with experience on your belt. That is why ASE requires verifiable experience in order to be certified. Without experience of installing or assembling a piston for installation, question like that would be difficult. That is great that you are taking the time learn about topics you don’t know. If you want to get experience in those types of things, there is a few ways to do it. Trade schools or shadow a technician at a local shop. Offer to buy them food, that would work with me.

      @@DriversTherapy bro like you said its easy to fix an engine. Manual labor is easy. Passing the ASE test requires studying and practice because the questions are vague made to trick you. Without the ASE certification you are not considered certified just a journey man being a mechanics sidekick even if you know how to fix and install all the parts of a car even if you can fix the engine or transmission which isn't hard. All i'm doing is watching youtube videos on how to and looking at diagrams of each part. I don't mind doing manual work and getting dirty with oil while using a wrench it beats doing hard labor at a warehouse which pays less. I'm personally tired of working at warehouses getting no where. I don't want to go to college since I know tons of people with crappppy jobs who have a degree. You apparently need a masters degree and even PHD to get hired at most grad jobs since almost everyone has a bachelors degree now.

    sure anyone can pass the test by practicing the ASE questions but in reality they could memorize the questions and pass the test but do they understand how to fix a car, probably not. You go to a shop they are gonna want you to preform mechanical work and not just stand around trying to diagnosis a problem which a real mechanic will eventually do and if your wrong than you won't last long. Cause a mechanic is going to eventually get fed up that you keep diagnosing the wrong issues and having him correct and diagnosis it correctly delaying the work.

      @@DriversTherapy it depends on what kind of job. But I've noticed the so called technicians are ASE certified while the journeymen are the real mechanics doing the real manual work.
