      I’m actually studying to re-certify in brakes now. Did you study ? What question types / subjects did you find difficult?

      @@MJ100k every single one and i never studied. May just bite the bullet and study for once

      Yeap no shame in falling. I failed manual transmission first time I took it. Studied harder, took it again and passed. I’m using a Motor age study guide. The questions on metering valves and proportioning valves are tricky cause in a real shop that doesn’t come up much. Anyways here’s a video I made about how I study. I bet you’ll pass it second time 👍

      I studied the brakes multiple times. I failed it. Long story short, most of the questions are not textbook related. I would consider reading into other topics for starting

      @@estebanmeza978 Yeap, I just took brakes a couple weeks ago. I had to re-certify. I need to re-certify in everything this year lol. You are right. It was tough. I noticed there were a couple brake questions that you need to know electrical for. I’m thinking maybe taking/ learning the electrical ASE test maybe better to take that before brakes.
      Also, on ASEs website you can download a study guide that will tell you what topics they will go over.
      www.ase.com/ase-study-guides
      Also- they have a practice test on there you can buy. I think they are like 15$ but don’t quote me on that. I haven’t bought one but It may be worth it.
      www.ase.com/official-ase-practice-test-program
      I think some of the brake technology has advanced so the motorage (and other brands) study guides may not be as up to date. So it may be good to use ASEs study materials.
      I think if you study again using the ASE info….And brush up on electrical. You can pass next time 👍 Don’t give up !

    Would dealerships hire independent tech with Ase trying to switch over to dealer ? Or would i ,eed start over as lube tech at dealership start from beginning

      Many dealerships are hurting for techs right now. If you have a few ASEs, and have been working as a mobile mechanic - I think most dealers would start you off as a technician (and not a lube tech). Reasons - If you really are capable, it would be a waste of talent. Oil changes don't make that much money for the shop. Also, If you make it clear that you WONT work as a lube tech. They may not want to risk you not working there at all. OR - you also have the option of - taking a position as a lube tech - just let them know you'd like to be promoted to tech in 6 months if you do well. Then use that 6 months to learn as much as possible about the brand. Most dealers have online training modules about their cars that you can take. Use those 6 months to take as many online training modules as possible. Print up as much info as you can and save it. Print up the records of what you passed..... Then at the end of 6 months, you will have a lot more training and experience than you have now. If they won't promote you then - You will be able to leave and get hired as a tech at a competing dealership super easy :D So - as you can see. You have good options

      Thank you and I have one last question for you do u recommend dealership or independent shop? What your opinion

    • @MJ100k
      @MJ100k  7 місяців тому

      @@Adam-kk7nw Depends on what YOU want. As far as knowledge and experience- if you like a particular car brand… The dealership is going to give you more info on your favorite cars than anywhere else. Your gonna get hands on time, online modules and many will send you to in person training on their cars as well.
      So you want those things then a dealership at a brand you enjoy will be the best. If you’re looking to work on multiple brands then an independent shop would be better. I’ve worked at both - I can tell you, it’s a difference experience both have pros and cons. At independent shops, any car brand can come in so you’ll have to figure out new systems and problems all the time. Sometimes you won’t be able to figure out an issue.. maybe you won’t have a special tool, or software calibration, or the cars so expensive you might not want to risk messing it up. Once someone came to the independent Pepboys type shop I was working at … they had a newer Porsche that looked like it needed head gaskets… Everyone was like - we ain’t touching that ! Take it to the dealer ! Lol
      But sometimes we would try and figure stuff out.. It’s almost like independent shops and dealership techs are two different animals 🤷‍♂️
      So it’s similar to the difference between being a General practitioner Dr or being a specialist. I say whatever you have a higher joy in working on should determine your decision 👍

    Would you say you need experience in the field to pass any of this tests?

    • @MJ100k
      @MJ100k  9 місяців тому +1

      It definitely helps, but no. This guy I went to Community College with passed 6 of them before he even graduated and started working lol
      I passed a couple the first year I was working and still in school.
      They aren’t easy though. You’ll have to study very hard and work on your test taking skills.
