Dropped Off In HELL 👹 One Way Out | 30 SOLO Miles In Hells Canyon

- Backpacking 30 miles in Hells Canyon on the Idaho/Oregon Border! I get dropped off by jet boat on the Snake River and spend the next 3 days hiking out. Hells Canyon is North America's deepest river gorge, even deeper than the Grand Canyon. It's a rugged and rocky hike through a desert landscape. There are numerous historic sites along the way, remnants from the wild west. Some like Kirkwood Ranch and Sheep Creek Ranch are still in use. For many stretches you're on the side of an exposed canyon wall. It's not for everyone, which is my favorite part about this hike.

I’m originally from Idaho and am one of those reverse transplants who moved to Washington 17 years ago. I miss Idaho so much and your videos remind me of the things I cherished most about living there. This is one of my favorite backpacking trips. I first hiked this route over 20 years go and it was raining. We ended up sleeping inside the McGaffee cabin. Great job on the video.
Enjoy the wilderness while you can. In my 66 years it has shrunk to isolated patches. As a kid in Washington, I had only to walk a mile out the back door to find solitude in the woods.
Don't ever stop creating. I love your content! Tremendous job!
Thanks Forrest!
Jon, Jen and I just got back from Hell's Canyon, guided by this video. This really is a fantastic video. Thanks!
My jaw is still dropped on the floor. What an amazing place I’ve never explored... and it’s in my backyard... so I best get my bag packed!
Ya Mike! Get over there before it gets too hot 🥵
Nice video! I just did this hike from granite creek last weekend because of this! We used hells canyon adventures to take us up river. Definitely rugged! Wish I had brought shoe gaiters for all the cheat grass that was sticking into my socks. Lots of poison ivy. McGaffe cabin is definitely creepy. The flushing toilet at kirkwood ranch was glorious. Great weekend. Not for everyone for sure!
This was such a great watch! The location, solo boat ride, drone shots, the history, even a great title... your showing your pro skills here!
Ha! That’s great to hear. “That’s a great title” is probably my favorite compliment of all time. I have probably worked harder on getting better at titles than I have in my camera skills 😂
Your channel is exceptional. I took a long road trip a few years ago across most of the Western half of the US and Idaho was my favorite state by far. These videos take me back and make me want to go back. Truly amazing country. Great footage.
Thank you Markus I appreciate you saying that! I love hearing the content “takes people back” that’s definitely a goal when I put the videos together. ✌️
Hell's Canyon is remote, wild, and jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Just stunning! I need me some Idaho!
Amen! Get you some Idaho!!!
Amazing views-I like that you included the night starry views in your video. Blessings!
Thank you
Jon, you are quickly becoming my favorite videographer on YT. Your production of The Rogue River is the absolute best presentation of that trail I have seen. And this video of Hell's Canyon really speaks to me. I'm going to hike it next spring because of this. Thank you for your commitment to excellence.
Thanks Tony, appreciate ya! 🍻
Hit up Hells Canyon in 2017, and it was absolutely breath taking. We drove up on the Oregon side over the oxbow dam, parked, and just started walking. No agenda, went off trail, bushwhacked, and soaked it all in. Hands down one of my favorite local trips. 🤙🏼 Excellent capture of your journey bro.
Thanks Keaton! I'm heading back in May to the Oregon side over by Imnaha. I wanted to do what you did and try to park and walk but in March I was being told all the roads would still be blocked. It's a really interesting area for me this year, I will be there more.
Great scenery! Favorite shot was you crossing bridge in background with blossoms on tree in focus in foreground. Very nicely done...
Thanks man!
Yeah mine too. A pretty great video. I drive by the Hells Canyon recreation area exit l once a week. Been wanting to check it out for almost two years.
@@adventureblu9843 O wow ya kind of a must if you're so close! Which exit?
@@JonConti not sure. I work in Ontario most Friday’s.
Cool area if you want some solitude! Summer I'm sure going to be hot and dry! Nice highlights....good work on the video...
Thanks man! Ya summer is pretty unbearable in there, best to do it in spring.
I did Pittsburg landing to Kirkwood this weekend, out and back 6mi each way, one night, nice little hike for an old fat guy. Can't beat flushable toilets at Kirkwood.
Those flushable toilets are super nice 👍
Thank You for all the work it takes to produce your videos it is really appreciated. This is one of your best!
Thanks Mary! Means a lot that some one notices 😀
I live in this area and haven’t hiked it yet. Thanks for the inspiration.
Great video. Loved this hike through Hell’s Canyon. Way to take us through remote Idaho.
Thanks Lindsey! Ya remote is a good word for this place.
Bravo! Wonderful video. Thanks for the glimpse into this incredible natural resource. Looking forward to more of these!
Thanks man! Thanks for watching
I actually got to go to Hells Canyon about 16 years ago, it was beautiful, but could have gone without the rattle snake that tried to bite my daughter and I and the bat that flew in our tent.😁
People really don't like rattle snakes 😂 Every time I bring this place up someone mentions the rattle snakes! I always found them to be kind of polite. At least they rattle before trying to bite you! Glad you're daughter is ok 😀 You two should go back now that she's older.
Jon, watching this again. my son and I just repeated this trip in April 2022, using Kilgore Adventures for our jet boat ride to Granite Creek. I had to call a lot of places, and we were on standby until a couple of families booked a boat. It is so worth hiking this trail again. we had 40 mph winds as we were going over Suicide Point, and my son flew his drone from that same spot where you did, which was very nerve wracking in the high winds. thanks for your video experience.
You're welcome! Glad you found a ride
Beautiful! 🌟🌟🌟
Great content! I've done the Hells Canyon adventure run a number of times in the past and it's always amazing!!
Thanks! Ya it’s a cool stretch ✌️
Is it weird to say you manipulate the emotions very well? I appreciate those vibes and the artistic nature behind it!
🤔
Glad to see the Tenkara rod coming out!
O man can you please teach me to use it!!! 😂😀
@@JonConti I wish I was good at it. Might need to have @Tenkara Addict teach you next time you're around Rexburg
@@iflanzy I’ve seen his videos, maybe I’ll hit him up
i love this channel!!!!
Another solid video brother! Thank you..
Thanks for watching Joaquin!
Love the video. I wonder if anyone else realizes how much more walking you have to do to film by yourself.
Thanks Chris! I think people realize it. That’s the comment I always get when I meet someone is how much more walking it must take. Just get a really wide lens you don’t have to go far 😆
Jealousy meter increasing! I've recently gone up to the Stanley area a couple weekends in a row thanks to your videos. The list of places to see in this state is endless!
Awesome Aaron I'm glad you're gettin out! You're right the list of places is endless.
What an inspiring video. Inspiring work ethic as well!
Thanks man cheers!
Looks incredible. Great work as usual.
Thanks Calvin! I just found your channel, about to dive in on some PCT videos 😀
I do miss that area. Lived there a few years back
This hike looks amazing Jon, loved the video. We don't see much about Idaho hiking.
If you follow this channel you'll see tons of Idaho hiking
One of my favorite hikes. Great job capturing it! I usually do the Pittsburgh landing to Sheep Creek out and back.
Did you ever meet a caretaker at sheep creek by the name of Bill? Not making this up, had a creepy old guy mask he would come out in.
@@JonConti Not while hiking. I have meet a caretaker while rafting but I do not remember his name or a mask.
.Great video! Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Man such an epic place!
We have plenty of rivers up here for that kayak Gatewood!
Hells canyon is an amazing place, thanks for sharing. Are you sure your allowed to fly your drone in there?
Jon this is a fantastic video, I really enjoyed it. Looks like an amazing place to explore. I'm looking for an early season trip to get out of Montana winter and I looks like Hells Canyon could be perfect. You think early April is a feasible time for a trip down there?
👍👍
✌
Awesome!!! I love being alone like that except for those moments where I hear bear and cougars and noises at night ( usually mind games) or the prison ecapee is gonna kill me. Seriously though, that’s how I am. I love the channel. I love being alone but I do have my moments at night
Thanks for watching! I think everyone that goes out alone has their “moments.” You can’t help it
@@JonConti fir sure
Amazing trip! Who does the old man song in the vid? Can't wait to see more of hells Canyon!
Cody Francis “old pen” is the song
@@JonConti thank you so much! Such an amazing song.
Your videos are so beautiful
Thanks man! 🙏 Picking beautiful places help quite a bit 😆
No. The camera is your paintbrush and you make art of video. I envy your skill. You make beautiful video.
Jon, doing this hike this weekend. Homer is dropping me at granite creek. Decently defined trail along the way?
Damn I got to this comment late. Hope you told Homer hi for me! The trail will fade in spots, just follow the river though and you'll always refind it.
Is there a way to boat in and hike all 8,000’ out? I am more interested in the incline
Great hike
I am going on the hike next spring.
Did he drop you off at Granite creek or Butler bar?
Granite creek ✌️
Thanks!
Smart of you to hike the canyon before the rattlesnakes come out. They’re bad down there. I live close to there. Beautiful camera work.
Thanks Ricardo. I just had an encounter with one in Oregon! Walked right over it. I don’t mind them though, I find them polite. 😀
