I was confused at first when she said she was relieved, but it makes sense now. She was horribly scared of going to hell and not seeing her family in heaven for stealing the ring. However, after seeing true evil for the first time she’s relieved. She’s not a bad person (by comparison) and she still has a spot in heaven with her family. Also, you’re extremely close to spot on with “unconditional love”. I won’t spoil anything though.
I love this episode because it really punches you right in the gut. It brings the viewer back for a reality check because we have gotten used to the Danes raiding and plundering. This episode slaps you right in the face and reminds you that Askeladd and his crew have done and still do horrific acts onto others.
@@LuisSierra42 Nothing wrong??! He murder an entire villege . Don't understand me wrong. He's my favorite character in anime of all time . But you cant denie that he's a terrible man . People aren't full good nor full bad . We in the middle . The majority of people
I love how sins are presented through Anne. In the beginning she’s struggling with stealing this little ring… then her sin actually saves her life by keeping her away from the village during the massacre, a sin so brutal and horrific that it shocks her more than anything. She probably believes that remaining on Earth while everyone else goes to Heaven is her punishment. And yet, it comforts her, because there are people that sin even worse than she does so she is not alone in this struggle. At least, that’s my interpretation of it.
I think its more like the feels freedom from sins, like when she stole the ring, she felt free, and she saw that the viking were even more free than her, and that makes her feel elated, though she is traumatized.
@@niftylittlename I agree with this. Wonderfully put. ^^ She says that God "won't be calling her there" like he did her family. So I don't think she's realizing that she has a chance because her sin "isn't as bad". She's sort of having a crisis of faith, which she had been questioning even before the traumatic event.
I think it’s, when she felt elated she was happy that she was able to see that her whole family went to heaven since they were separated like her mother had said didn’t want to see happen, which now happened, her family’s in heaven never having to suffer again and she’s in hell in constant suffering (from the trauma)
I was wondering why she made that noise at the time, wouldn't have noticed if you didn't point it out lolll Ange just like me watching the show intensely 😂
Technically they're "anti-villians", but, yeah, it really reminds everyone that they're still Vikings and they still do raiding, plundering, and massacreing.
@@TheAluvisify Everyone there except Thorfinn are villains without a doubt, excluding Canute, Ragnar and Willbald. But even they're responsible for doing nothing.
Willibald was so intrigued by them talking about Thors bc he seemed to closely resemble his idea of what a "selfless, unconditional LOVE" is, not bc he knows him
she doesn't feel less bad than the danes nor thinks her sin is less bad compared to askeladd. She came to realization that you could sin and live without fear of god, that maybe her place is hell, because she liked to sin (when she stole the ring), this excitement is because she feels free of the burden of god's jugdgement. obviously this is a reaction of shock, and surely she deeply cares about her family
Great reading of the scene and I think you're right. She admits in the scene herself that she knows God "won't be calling her there" with her family. She's equating her elation of stealing the ring with realizing evil men exist. To me, it doesn't sound like she's elated because she feels like she has a chance to get into heaven now.
I'm pretty sure most of the important characters like Canute, Thorfinn and Thorkell really existed, but Askeladd for example was a creation of the author
I think the girl felt "elated", because stealing the ring was a big rush for her and the guilt was eating at her, but seeing the Danes massacre without hesitation opened up her world (it's not so small).
I would say that Askeladd is less after revenge and more so wants to secure the future on Wales because of his mother and he is simply willing to do anything to achieve this.
Easily my favourite episode of this series. I think the elated dialouge is because she realized that she is a good person when compared to the Danes who killed her village. When presented with such evil people, she realized that Hell was reserved for people like them. Her punishment for stealing the ring was to stay in this hell with them, but she could meet her family in heaven after her death. Which is why I think she tried to commit suicide at the end, but failed.
as far as historical accuracy goes, the side characters like lief, king swein, cannute, harrold are based on real people, along with some of the settings being historical, like the viking attack on london bridge, where both the english and the danes vaguely mention a particularly strong person unammed person on the battlefield, which vinland saga portrays as thorkel, who isnt a real historical person. pretty much all the main characters in vinland saga, thorfin, askeladd, thors, thorkel, etc. arent real people, so they can have the freedom to write the story as they like, while loosely injecting them into historical events
Thorfinn is a real person, we just know nearly nothing about his actual childhood because the Sagas don't really contain a whole lot of information about children. Yukimura still gets to make up a lot of stuff for Thorfinn, but towards the end of the story we get into stuff described by the Sagas.
@@adrianp1725 Yea, and I would have to hunt down every single person that took part in the slaughter. Thorfinns dad didnt have to be ambushed either. I've always interpreted Anne surviving as her family going to heaven and her being left behind in "hell" that being earth.
This was the episode which really made me realize: "oh damn this show isn't messing around."
What about ep 6?
This episode really puts into perspective that the audience is following the villains.

In manga she said "My heart is pounding"
Askeladd is pronounced Ashe-lad in old Norse. That's why Japanese VA is pronouncing this way.
I'm pretty sure most of the important characters like Canute, Thorfinn and Thorkell really existed, but Askeladd for example was a creation of the author

Really great discussion 👍
dont know if the ring stolen by her was a blessing to her to get a chance to live or a curse for her to live with this pain of losing her family.
I wasn't really hooked on Vinland Saga until this episode, but after this episode the show doesn't have a bad/mid episode
