First, Thorfinn meets his father in what seems to be a heavenly paradise and then his second father in the deepest corners of the earth reminiscent of hell. But instead of representing the bad side of Thorfinn, Askellad is the one that helps him get out of that pit and confront his fears. This show is art. Pure and simple.

When Askeladd was on his last breath, he had the chance to told Thorfinn that Floki ordered him to kill Thors, but he chose to instead told Thorfinn to leave and don't stuck in 'this place'. Really brilliant !!

Vinland saga S2 Ep 9 and AOT s4 special edition part1 was released in gap of just 2 days, and seeing both of the main character crying and saying "sorry" for different reasons was an absolute treat to watch, to just think that both characters have suffered so much pain their entire life and just drift in different directions due to contrasting philosophies is just an absolute pleasure. To sum it up, both stories teach the atrocities that violence leads to, but Vinland Saga is more of an "aspire to be" like story, whereas AOT is a "cautionary tale" or a "warning"

I love Einar because even though he doesn't understand Thorfinn, he TRIES to understand and supports his friend. When they both wake up, Einar is initially happy and jokes that is was satisfying to see Thorfinn punch the retainer, but once he sees Thorfinn's genuine regret and determination to be reborn, he says "I see. All right. I don't really get it, but I hear you loud and clear." I don't think Thorfinn would go down the road towards becoming a true warrior if Einar was not the one to walk along with him.

This chapter already felt great in the manga but the anime made it more impactful and that’s thanks to the wonderful music and voice acting. Sound adds so much to the atmosphere.
Also Einar being there as Thorfinn makes this promise of not being violent again is extremely important. Because he has a witness now. There is someone who saw this moment, heard his conviction and Thorfinn has to stand up to this now. If he would have been alone it may be more difficult later on. But with Einar witnessing his anti-violence-promise he has to stay true to it
    (SPOILER:
coming back to the music: I can’t wait to see how impactful the anime will be when we reach the scene where Thorfinn meets Floki and is tempted into violence again. Because underlying this scene with a powerful music like in this episode will make it even ten times better)

15:39 I was on the same page as Angelo here, as I hesitated on watching the show for so long. I remember when it came out and clips started appearing on social media, the setting and designs got me interested (I love classical and medieval history), but most of the clips was pre-pubescent Thorfinn screaming a lot, and that just made me lose interest all over again, as I don't really like that obnoxious, loud, and angry shonen character archetype.
This series suffers from what I call "the early AOT Eren syndrome", where they are, in fact, an obnoxious, loud, and angry shonen character, but it is done with a purpose and payoff like nothing else, and could not be done otherwise. This is indeed PEAKland Saga.

22:00 I disagree a bit with this view, because everything in the dream comes from Thorfinn's mind, so: the way Askeladd manifests himself in this fantasy world is how Thorfinn sees it, and has little to do with the reality of Askeladd's relationship with that world of violence depicted (this fidelity is totally dependent on the accuracy of Thorfinn's consciousness). I say this because I believe Askeladd's situation was more complex, and young Thorfinn probably didn't absorb it all in the most accurate way, especially given what he was like in the past.

It would be more accurate to describe Vinland Saga as a drama centered around Thorfinn rather than an action anime. Would explain why all the folks who just wanna see action are leaving. Which is a pity because this show is a masterpiece.

anyone I know who've watched vinland saga has always loved it. Please don't make friends with blind wave and the normies - the two biggest reaction channels just clowned on this masterpiece. JK, i don't hate any of them - i regularly watch their reaction to other shows but it was disheartening that these people didn't appreciate what this show entails by only watching shonen action packed shit with no heart to the story and only hype-inducing anime. Another thing, I love you two guys so much. Loved the discussion, the reaction, everything.

Did blind wave hate on vinland? That's surprising I actually like their channel.
Normies are pretty garbage though. Have dudes sleeping, on their phone, not even paying attention, then proceeds to review the episode that they didn't even watch. 😑

Whats amazing about Vinland is thay can got you with just perfect words sometimes, there were no misstakes
Mastermind creation, and when you bring action to that is just perfect
But thay screw animation in last episodes, Mappa currently work on many crap like hells paradise, thay didnt give vinland enouth time

The pacifist path story this show try to tell is nonsense. In order for you to be a true worrier (pacifist) you have to kill, 100's in case of Thors and his son Thorthin.

    • @Ash_Wen-li
      @Ash_Wen-li Рік тому +1

I think the story flew over your head because we don't need to kill people to become fully functioning members of society. Thorfinn's pacifism is held as an ideal. Not something everyone should achieve but a goal to align and guide ourselves. In reality we are on a spectrum between Canute and Thorfinn

      You're right. It's naively optimistic.
Not sure if you are caught up but spoilers just in case:
That's why very soon after this episode, the author does an excellent job of tempering pacifism with the cruel reality that sometimes force and violence is unavoidable, even necessary. I too didn't like the overly pacifist route and message this episode portrayed, so when the following episodes happened tempering that optimism, I was pleasantly surprised.

I don't think the story is on the same level as AoT. It's great, but far from a masterpiece. Obviously, it's heaps better than Demon Slayer.

@@JPSaga77 None. Most anime is dumb as hell (Demon Slayer is a great example). Now, I can enjoy anime that is just entertaining (like Azumanga Daioh) but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece.

@@JPSaga77 Vinland Saga is definitely not in the entertaining category. Again, it's better than most animes. Enough for me to watch it. It actually barely has any anime tropes (except in the last episode of the season, with Ylva. I did not appreciate it.) It's just not on the same level as AoT. It's not something that I'd watch a second time. It's not something that I'd watch countless of reaction videos to (I only watch these guys cuz I really like them)

@@tFighterPilot Yeah and I'm not even comparing them, Aot and Vinland are on their on league, Aot with action, writing, development , I don't even know why is getting hate and On the other side, Vinland, writing , development, not that much action but its great aswell, actually both are my favorite anime / manga, I think I just need three fingers to count what animes I'd watch again!
